The Good Grylling

Simon Mayo|08:29 UK time, Monday, 13 June 2011

Greetings to all bloggers, hope you had a fine weekend. Chances are it was a) a wet one and b) you missed out on a birthday honour. Unless you are Bob Harris of course and well done to him for a stunning OBE. My guess is he is now entitled to a larger portion of food on Thursdays and double votes on the country showstopper alongside new rights to drive his sheep over London Bridge or somesuch. There are some awards that can raise an eyebrow of surprise, how lovely to salute one of the great voices of British radio. Long live Whispering Bob!

Salford was fun and working alongside the 1st violins of the BBC Philharmonic was a quite something. You should be able to see it on the red button from today. The All Request side of things was essentially me, sitting in a huge drama studio, with hundreds of texts and emails. When the line went down and it all went quiet,it was a little less calm. We discovered that when the red light went on, it killed everything else. In a live studio, that was a quite a problem! So the light stayed off and intruders who stumbled into our little show just got frowned at.

The journey home was a crammed train sitting opposite a man with a plastic bag full of lager cans and peanuts. He worked his way through them, one by one, until Watford. He leapt off and disappeared into the night. He may still be looking for his way home.

Today's lovely show features Bear Grylls:adventurer, writer and TV presenter. Oh and Chief Scout and the youngest Briton to climb Everest at the age of 23. And SAS man. And good looking. And a nice guy. This has to stop. His story is called 'Mud Sweat and Tears' and he's on from 6.

So we should do BEAR GRYLLS oldies. Songs of SURVIVAL and DERRING-DO. I think so.

Well lets hope we have a rewarding and encouraging Monday, see you after 5

I know we needed some rain, but did we have to have that much yesterday? And not only wet, but cold too! We didn't put the heating back on, but it was a close call; even the cats, who normally don't sit together, cuddled up on the sofa for warmth!

Did any bloggers watch the Canadian Grand Prix yesterday? Personally I prefer watching British Superbikes and I usually find F1 a bit boring but yesterday's was much more entertaining... even the between-race chat was good with David Coulthard and Martin Brundle... David is very quick witted and he amused me when the camera showed a huge boat sailing past the circuit and DC said "This morning that boat was in dry-dock!" :o))

We did watch the Canadian GP, having recorded it when we went to our dance class. We were amazed when the recording finished and it was still on live at 9pm! Excellent banter, excellent finish (I like Jenson Button, he seems decent!) but on the whole, I just find F1 has disappeared up it's own behind and is all about the money now. I used to follow it in the Senna/Prost days when it was actually "racing" and not a procession.

Morning all, hope you managed a good weekend in between the showers.

Somewhat damp in Oxon today - even the plants are holding up brollies - and every weekend news report I heard included reports of drought and hosepipe ban fooolery...made me LAUGH

Mr e and I swapped rôles last night, Mr e "I'm going to put on the heating" Mrs e "why don't you put on a jumper instead"

I want to 2nd #12, PSL's WILD WILD WOOD' from the Modfather...

Plus 'ANT FARM' by The Eels (must have sat on a few of those)

'CRIPPLE CREEK FERRY' Neil Young (must have travelled on a few of those..)

In honour of the weather, maybe Sim, sorry, Lord Ammo could think about playing

By the way, regarding Friday's discussion regarding lamé and flambé and other such european letterings, here is a handy website:

    https://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.htm

Hold down Alt and type the number (using the number keypad) in the “Dec” column, this will give you the character you want in most Windows programs, certainly in Word, Outlook and Notepad.

For example, Alt+130 gives you é, Alt+135 gives you ç and so on.

No need to scuttle to Word, insert symbol, cut paste and all that malarky.

Coffee break time!!! And believe me, I need it today after wearing myself out yesterday - 4 hours driving in the pouring rain. The M3/M25 were definitely puddle-something, but wonderful isn't the word I would have used...

I don't normally do multiple song-suggesting posts, but if it's not too late I just thunk of another one, which is such a lovely song I had to include it:

    NATURE BOY by George Benson

Missed the Grand Prix, but as a result of it lasting 4 hours Jason Isaacs was cut off in his prime at the end of yesterday's Case Histories - our HDD box isn't clever enough to work out when a programme starts late. Good thing it's a 2 parter.

On the subject of recording - anyone know if you can record things off the red button? I'd really like to see the 5 Live show from last Friday, but I don't know whether I'll get the chance as we have a state visit from my Mum this week.

    Good morning all!

Simon, thank you again for playing my ARFO! It was for Katy as well so perhaps we should share the crown.

The weekend's rain gave us an opportunity to clear out the loft. Difficult when wearing a crown - don't know how the Queen manages. Anyhow, a huge box was filled for the charity shop and 6 bin liners for the rubbish. Usual arguments - "can't throw that out", "yes, I can - it's been in the loft for 12 years and we haven't needed it". My dear old Looby Loo doll went to the rubbish - she looked like she had smallpox plus other unmentionable diseases. I did save my Dad's elephant and monkey that he had when a boy - they are over 75 years old and very threadbare but I couldn't part with them.

Hope everyone else had productive weekends.

  • Comment number 59.

#56 Maybe the Queen wears a scarf over her crown when she's clearing out the loft at Buck Palace - á la Hilda Ogden... I am useless at clearing out, particularly anything with sentimental value. I still have a couple of teddy bears that I've had most of my life - they gathering dust fairly unloved somewhere or other, but I could never bear (see what I did there...?) to throw them out. Also, I was in Son's room last week changing his bedding while he was away, and I spotted his Lamb that was given to him as a 'welcome home' present when he first arrived, by a very dear friend of ours who is sadly no longer with us. And I thought to myself that I must rescue it, just in case he ever decides to throw it away.

    Morning All,

Late to the party. Doesn't really matter as I haven't got any suggestions, lol.

The OH thinks that I am a hoarder. I saved quite a lot of stuff from the family home when my dad moved and it lingered for years in the upstairs attic bedroom. When we came to clearing out so the Elder boy could have his own room I ended up selling all my dolls on fleabay. Got £20.00 for one Sindy Doll! Broke my heart really at the time but doesn't feel so bad now. As for the rest...I was being really brave and putting loadsa stuff on the "to throw" pile only for the OH to go through it saying "Oh, don't throw that", "you can keep that" etc. His bugbear with me are cards. I just keep them and I don't know why. Told OH to just throw them when I am not there and I wouldn't know. Too sentimental methinks.

Hope you all had a good weekend.

#59 & 60 - I have always been a hoarder too. I think it is because we moved so much when I was young that "stuff" became important and carrying it with me from place to place made each new house feel like home. There are some things I could never get rid of - my cuddly dog that my sister gave me when I went to boarding school, all the cards Mr P has given me over the years, etc. But other things are just that - things.

But wow, £20 for a Sindy doll? All my Sindy's (and all their furniture) are in my Mum's loft. Perhaps I should do a clear out there!! Might even fund the new house!!

  • Comment number 65.

Hey Alex~G - did a little dance and may have whooped a whoop when I heard you got ARFO - well done - fab choon :) I'm sure Katy would be magnanimous and let you have it all to yourself - she's lovely that way, you know. Hee hee!!! Clearing the loft wearing the crown - conjures up an image ;)

Hee hee Deebee - wearing the crown with a headscarf on top. Actually, I think Queenie is quite partial to a headscarf so I guess anything is possible.

#61 - Tortie - I thought it was just me. It's not even any less stressful, is it? When are you off on your hols?

#35 Deevs... I used to like Moto GP but 14 or 15 MotoGP bikes is not as as much fun to watch as 30+ Superbikes in BSB, with the likes of Josh Brookes, Tommy Hill, Shakey Byrne et al! I find Supersport or 125 in BSB, better to watch than a MotoGP race at the moment!

Guilty as charged m' Lud - I'm a hoarder too. I have an ottoman which served as a toy box when the boys were little and it is stuffed full of the German plastic figures, cars, buildings, etc plus we have boxes of the Danish building bricks that I can't bear to part with. I like to think the teddies and other soft toys in the roof space regularly have a party when we're not around. I can just see Andy Pandy and Postman Pat throwing some moves ;)

Good idea, JPA, to get someone else to chuck the stuff out - as you say you'd be none the wiser.

On the subject of lofts, our large one has 32, yes 32 international-sized rigid packing cases full of my Mother-in-Law's house contents which have been there since about 2001...she lives locally, and asked me to look in the boxes for something (btw she was packed, moved and had her stuff delivered to our house for £14k from South Africa...) in that box, movers had carefully wrapped now fossilized blue tack, old bits of string and the like. Arg.

I have never been near the boxes again, but have plans for this summer when Oxfam will be benfitting from the decent stuff she doesn't want, and the recycling centre (aka tip) from the rest.

It's going to be a BIG job.

  • Comment number 78.

#77 Not weird at all. I left the ex-Mr P but I still have the wedding album. In fact, the current (and for now and forever) Mr P and I were talking last night about whether said album should be included in our move. I might keep the pics that don't have the ex in them.

I do have a problem with books though. I'm an avid reader, and I'm always buying paperbacks. But once I've read them they sit on the shelves gathering dust. Very occasionally I'll read something again, if it's a particularly good read.

Toots - love the idea of you throwing out the ex-hubby as part of a clearing out day! LOL!

#78 - Glad it's not just me. Bit of a dilemma tho' whether to take or not to the new house. Good compromise, taking the ones without the ex.

Btw, the Hat of Inappropriate Bloggery hasn't been awarded of late, has it? (This one might even qualify for the Tony Blackburn Hat ;) )Has anyone suggested:-

    Good afternoon,

I'm very late (about 3 days actually). As it happens I have been out this morning donating stuff to a charity shop that supports adults with learning disabilities (the type of charity that is close to my heart). Need to get rid of more stuff so the above posts talking about hoarding will spur me on!

Congrats to Alex-Girl on her crown. Suits you madam!

Deebee, your weekend sounded perfect. Spending time with a 99 year old is my idea of a great way to spend time. So much life to hear about.

Internet supermarket shopping - When you have a toddler it is preferable rather than attempting to do it in store.

Feeling very proud of Mr 39 (38 actually). Yesterday he cycled 100 miles in all that awful weather in aid of a male cancer charity called Orchid.

    Have a good day.x

#84 - Ooooh, oooh!!! Alex!!! Please may I come for a play date? Oooops, I mean to help with the arduous task of clearing the attic ;) ~ xx

Ooops-a-doodle - forgot to say 'hi' to the lovely Bids from next door. If you need help fitting the gate, I know someone who can help ;)

#83 - Deebs, if only it had been that easy ;)

#86 - JPA, well done Mr 39 (38 actually). Challenge enough without the rotten weather.

    # 76:

I think maybe the cake will morph into a new life form if you leave it long enough...it could be like the primeaval sludge from which we all sprung..

Now that's true of some more than others (ie developed out of a Fruit Cake, became a Fruit Cake..)

    Did anyone watch Camelot?

Who was it for?? A script by a 12 year-old, naughty bits for Skins fans, and they spent all their money on the 2 main actors (Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green) the rest were like local rep actors.

'King Arthur' looked like Anneka Rice's offspring which was disconcerting as he did not wear a jump suit at any time.

Shocking waste of time (mine) and money (theirs).

If you want to see some typecasting, my Mother was playing a 'batty old lady' in Doctors on Friday lunchtime - life imitating art I suggested to her!

#86 Well done Mr 39 (38 actually)! That is some achievement!

    #87 Of course you can!

#89 I recorded it Suzie, but not watched it yet; I might not now having read your review! I thought it might be something to watch whilst ironing, now that Dr Who's finished for a while!

#89 - Have to say I didn't watch Camelot - forgot it was on. Doh! I saw Doctors on Friday lunchtime - your Mum was fab as the 'batty old lady'.

    Afternoon all

#86 I have to agree, trying to go round a supermarket, with a 4 (nearly 5) year old and a monster boy of 18 months, is just not worth the hassle, I would gladly pay twice as much for the delivery!

Interesting discussion on lofts and hoarding, my mother still has most of my Action Man stuff - mainly 1970's originals, which I've not parted with, could be useful for an online auction oneday.

It must be something about this blog which attracts hoarders, as it seems most of us can't throw anything away, esp books!

#78 Alex - when I split up from my ex-wife, all photo's with me on it had been removed from sight before I had even collected all my stuff!

#90 - Yay!!! I didn't have a Sindy doll, my sister did. I had Tressy - her hair grew if you turned a screw in her belly button!?!

Julia, my Mum's not quite 99 yet! She'll be 78 in August, and her friends that came with us are 80 and 86. I know exactly what you mean though. Although there was a rather lengthy discussion over lunch about their and their friends' various ailments! Congrats to Mr 39 (38 actually) - a great achievement indeed!

The other thing I hoard is concert and theatre programmes - big, glossy things which are invariably overpriced and get shoved in a drawer as soon as you get home. In fact, if I go somewhere with Mr B these days he doesn't let me buy one.

I had Sindy's younger sister - think she was called Patch. I'll have to go and have a look in my loft now...

Still on the subject of hoarding, when my parents moved to Dorset from the house in Sittingbourne that my brother and I had grown up in, they had a big clear out of the loft and got rid of my dolls' house (which my Dad had made himself - including wallpaper on the walls and bits of carpet on the floors) and my brother's train set. Tragic...

#91 it might cause you to singe a few collars n cuffs, the racy bits are just that - but the script is goddam awful. Modern expressions, used in the wrong era. (When did someone in the middle ages ever say 'like' not meaning to LIKE someone...

If you watch Skins (the rude soap for teens and up) it would be puuurrrfect.

#92, thanks, will tell her when she gets back from her lastest jaunt!

Also to be seen on Casualty, Misomer murders, Peak practice (as was) Crimewatch (as a stand-in witness, not a villain!). Whenever there is a batty old lady required, 'who you gonna call'? Seems to be my Mother.

Still waiting for her Big Break (anyone writing a 'driving Miss Daisy' sequel?)
