Slightly downbeat at moment, my best guy mate upset me last night by giving me the impression that I wont do a good job if I accept a foreigner to do his books and tax and accounts... I am qualified. The foreigner is one of the kid student dads at his KB club I attend.... I said I was offended by his comment and he said " dont give a s**t and stormed in after dropping him home last night...hope he apologises aa he was so rude!

Now had a chance to read back - anyone else get frustrated when you think you've thought of a really clever and original song, only to find about 5 others have suggested the same one! Ho hum - never mind. Share and share alike...



#7 Alice - the best way I've found of cooking aubergines is to slice them, brush with a little olive oil and pop them under the grill. You can then add them to whatever sauce you're doing. Oven roasting them also works quite well. Must admit I have mixed feelings about today's recipe - I LOVE aubergines, but on the couple of occasions I've eaten lentils they have disagreed with me quite violently *shudders*

#62 One of my favourite books is "The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. My copy is sadly tattered now but it is a superb read and, whilst it follows the Morte d'Arthur story, she has given her own interpretation which is wonderful.

#13 #42 I can recommend 'Case Histories' which I tied Mr e down to watch with me last night ....he complained "there is too much good telly on at the moment, no time to watch our 'Soprano's' boxed set" *Suzie smiles in a contented way*

So I guess that means he liked it. Jason Isaacs is a bit of a mumbler tho, no trouble with the broad Scots on the prog, but he was a wee bit impenetrable.

Overall good tho,

No songs suggestions from me today - it's pretty much sewn up by now, methinks.

#64 Alex, I've read many re-tellings of the Arthurian legends but not that one. I'll find a copy. I lost a whole weekend reading Bernard Cornwell's version. And, Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy, starting with The Crystal Cave, is a great read, too.

Oh I suppose Simon could put the cat amongst the pidgeons (makes a change from rats) and play

'HOW TO HANDLE A WOMAN' 'sung' by Richard Harris from the Camelot stage show album - we had and played this 'album' to death as kids - so much so that for Xmas last year, I got my sister a CD copy for her car (never thanked me tho!.....)

#64 That's one of my favourite books too Alex, and mine is very tatty now also! I very rarely re-read books, but this one is an exception, and I'll often dip into it.

#13, #42, and #65: Case Histories was indeed very good, and some great shots of Edinburgh to boot! I haven't read the book but my Mum is a big Kate Atkinson fan and recommended it.



Am looking forward to hearing Nige's recipe, as I love both aubergines and lentils, but have to go out around 6 so may well miss it. I regularly have veggie meals, though I could never "go the whole hog" and give up meat entirely!

Andy - Waaah!!! you're bringing back long-forgotten memories. I have a Styx single which has a laser etched (I think it is) design on the vinyl. I have the Foreigner 'Four' album on vinyl which I played 'til it was nearly frayed at the edges.



Meant to say earlier, I really enjoyed Jon Ronson (or was it Ron Jonson? ;) ) last night. As I said yesterday, not normally the kind of thing I'd read but will definitely be purchasing 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'. Not sure I'd give the 'Psycopath Test' a read - I'm very suggestible and would probably convince myself I have psycopathic tendencies. Now then, where did I leave my weapons of mass destruction? I'm off to conquer the world - I'm going to be great and everyone will just love me - hope I don't get bored on the way ;)

#76 Andy, I read the first three books (are there 5 or 6 in the series now?) and really enjoyed them. When the fourth book came out it had been so long since I'd read them I felt I should start again at the beginning and then never got around to it.

Btw, it certainly is culture corner again today with all the discussion of historical novels. To my shame I've never read any of the books on Arthurian legend - can anyone suggest a good place to start? I always have the feeling they'd be a bit of a tricky read.

I have njoyed todays theme - reminded me of lots of much loved books that I need to re-read. I might even go back to basics and read the full Morte d'Arthur - I have it at home. There are also the T.H White books - Sword in the Stone etc.



We have had several holidays in Glastonbury and Tintagel with Mr P kindly obliging my Arthurian interest. The ex Mr P and I had an encounter with a ghost dog in Tintagel and there is a local legend that says that Merlin appears in the form of a dog to help people in trouble. We were in a cave under the cliff (good place for a cave - better than on top of the cliff) and the tide was coming in rapidly. This dog appeared and kept barking and dancing around us, edging us back to the entrance and out on to the beach. We could see no owner and when we looked back for the dog, it wasn't there. Uncanny.

#88 Toots, where to start? Well, the first book I read on King Arthur was a Puffin paperback by Roger Lancelyn Green. It got me hooked on the legends but may be a little too juvenile. Mary Stewart's trilogy, as I said above, which starts with The Crystal Cave, is very readable and a number of blogpoppets have recommended Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon. If you want realism, Bernard Cornwell's Warlord trilogy is superb, that begins with The Winter King.

#92 Toots, my grandad used to say "There's no such thing as a bad pub, it's just that some are worse than others". I think the same can be said of books about Arthur. It's only opinion, of course, but I think it's almost impossible to write a bad book based on the legends.

#92 Toots, I would recommend Mists of Avalon. It is a good read and whilst it doesn't exactly follow the legend, it has the core. By the way, Mr P heard your mensh in the car last night and it was the first thing he said when I saw him -"Toots got a mention! Whoop!" Really made me smile.

#94 - with that recommendation, I shall search out a good place to get started. I have to say, I'm not v keen on fantasy type novels but will have a good go.
