Boggis Bunce And Bean Ride Again

Simon Mayo|08:51 UK time, Monday, 27 June 2011

And good morning to you too. I write this blog, for the first time I think, from my garden. In a moment I must clear up the pigeon feathers where a fox/cat/beast has met a sticky end. Then, on the recommendation of my neighbour, buy a sonic blast type of thing (it'll be a bit of a vague Internet search) to scare the foxes. He has chickens, I have turf. Quite what thrills a fox gets from digging up my turf, I have no idea - unless they are doing it on purpose. They might have rumbled my er, bathroom based deterrent and stepped their campaign of annoyance up another level. My power hose is at the ready.

I trust you had a splendid weekend. Or maybe one where nothing went wrong and everyone is still speaking to everyone else. We watched quite a bit of Glastonbury and enjoyed not being there until Paul Simon in the sun yesterday. His cold meant his voice wasn't at its best but that band! Apparently the crowd was bigger than for U2 but the weather might have something to do with that. Following the comments on Twitter during U2 and Coldplay, I got so exasperated I blurted something to the effect that if you hate them so much, try not watching. You'll be less stressed and live longer. The haters seem to take a masochistic delight in making themselves watch, just so they can tell us how terrible it is. Not interested. Stop it. Read a book.

So today we welcome Stevie Nicks to Drivetime. Her new album 'In Your Dreams' is really good I think and the collaboration with Dave Stewart, who produces here, has come up trumps. See what you think after 6.

And the songs have to be for WIMBLEDON. I was tempted to do heat but the UK map reveals enough discrepancies to make that annoying for those in cool and cloudy parts. So on another Murray day let's do all the TENNIS and assorted PARAPHERNALIA. Come on Virginia.

Have a cool and sweat-free Monday, see you after 5.

Meantime I'm not moving from this seat till Mr Fox appears.

    Morning all,

Probably not much from me today, and I'm not sure how much of the show I'll hear - my wife is having a knee replacement operation today (and will be having the second done as soon as the first is healed).

But for me, one of the most obvious choons for the feem, particularly with Stevie Nicks on the show is:

Great blog today Simon :) We have one of those sonic devices to deter cats from our garden, I have to say though that thus far it hasn't done much deterring! Indeed I had the savoury task of picking up mouse parts from the back of the garden yesterday *Yuk*

Why is it that on the rare occasion that I am actually online in a morning an can post to the blog (I normally catch up via an RSS feed many hours after the event!) The only song I can think of that is tennis related, other than the fine choices already mentioned, is:

THE BRATT, CHALKDUST - THE UMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

Was about 9 when it was released and I thought it was brilliant. I haven't heard it for about 25 years. I suspect it has not aged well!

Hope the weather is being kind to you all...

Hope the op goes well for you wife AlexH.

I'm not confessing as I don't see the need but I like U2 and Coldplay. Altho' I have to say that there seemed to be something lacking from Bono on Friday. Maybes it was the rain putting a dampener on things. Coldplay were great. Full of energy. I also caught The Noisettes yesterday as I searched for summat to watch while doing my pile of ironing (in this weather! Tell me about it) and I have to say, that girl can sing. Only knew a couple of the songs but it didn't matter, the rest was sang with great gusto. Caught the back of of the Biffy Clyro set. They are loud but I like them.Gonna try and find them ont' website. I was disappointed with the red button. Not much to choose from considering how many people are playing at Glasto.

Hope you all have a good day and survive the heat, if you have it or get the sun, if you don't.

    Notes from a muso household . . .

Ken - your Porcupine Tree link led me down some poignant paths, but no less enjoyable for that. Thanks. Later in the weekend whilst with friends, the shared listening of album Fear of A Blank Planet seemed much less melancholic.

Glasto - on balance I don't think I saw/heard as much as I would normally - it was *that* sort of weekend. I guess there's lots to catch up on in Red Button/Catch Up land. More my sort of thing than the tennis.

BTW - top coverage from the Beeb.

Moment of the weekend - Lauren Laverne waxing lyrical over Beyonce's performance to an indifferent Zane Lowe, leaving him about 10 seconds to respond before announcing Kool & The Gang. He laughed.

Loved the stuff I thought I might: Fleet Foxes, Mumfords, Stornoway, Paolo, Elbow, Paul Simon, Noisettes.

U2 and Coldplay don't really need my love but agree with Simon - if it don't float your boat, don't watch and then comment and spoil it for others ..

Fell in love with Pendulum for their catchy choons, rhythms and instant likeability - I fear 'tis but a crush and won't last long. Also was good to see that Kaiser Chiefs are as cuddly as ever. Can't comment on anything else that I haven't seen yet.

Live Music has never been more popular - I am so glad it's happening during my lifetime ..

In our own small way - Making Music round the Dining Room Table was beautiful on Saturday night - the boys are working on covers 'BusStop' 'It's Only Natural' and 'Eye In The Sky' amongst others .. tonight they're jammin' with the blues boys down our local music venue.

  • Comment number 49.

    Borderline - Madonna

Chant No 1 (I don't need this pressure on) - Spandau Ballet

Enough from me. Taking a half day so I can watch the tennis all cosier up on the sofa.

Postponed Biffy for Pendulum, Really need to play this louder but I am sure that the boss wouldn't like it. Already getting looks for head nodding while typing, hehehe.

    Thanks Katy for the recommendation.

  • Comment number 53.

Thought of another couple that I don't think have been suggested yet:

WICHITA LINEMAN by Glen Campbell. So sad to hear he's not well.

And I keep thinking of BLINDED BY THE LIGHT by Manfred Mann's Earth Band - second line 'revved up like a deuce...'. And sometimes the players are facing into the sun, today particularly I would think.

#35 Seconded! Why didn't I think of that one?

Alex H - best wishes to Mrs H.

I like Coldplay - in fact X&Y is one of my all-time favourite albums. But, as has been said many times before, it would be boring if we all liked exactly the same things. I agree with Simon though - if you don't like it, don't watch it!

Mo - enjoy your afternoon watching the tennis. Hope you feel better soon.

Only thing I can think of, not already suggested by the early-bird bloggers is

THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS By JONI MITCHELL...

#14 folks leaving doors/windows open at this time of year is a burglars delight!

We once got in the car, drove away for a weekend and came back SUNDAY night to find the FRONT door wide open, as my son-in-a-rush had left it.

Nothing taken, (we had nothing worth flogging!) but you can imagine the horror of it!

Glad you found the +1 - I find there's not the same urgency to get all my chores done so I can be ready to watch Corrie as I know I can catch up an hour later. Popstar to Operastar - I agree last night's result was fair although I would prefer it if Joseph was kept out of the bottom two, bless him, I think he's kinda cute and for that reason would like him to stay in the competition ;). All the songs seemed v difficult last night but I felt poor old Andy could've been given something a little less taxing on his memory.

Rightio, off to catch up on this morning's blog.

No need to confess to liking U2 and Coldplay. I happily queued at the Reading Hexagon at stupid o'clock on a Sunday morning for my ticket to the Joshua Tree show at Wembley stadium, and went there again on the Zooropa tour. I thought Bono was in pretty good voice for an oldie, he can still sing. Given what a "best of" set list it was I was a bit surprised that they didn't finish with "40".

Enjoyed Coldplay too, but wish Chris Martin would just let the final notes of a song ring out a bit longer before speaking, so the moment can be enjoyed a bit more.

Beyonce goes straight over my head - generally I just don't get all that r'n'b stuff.

Also need to say a well done to the Eavis family and/or the BBC and/or the legal bods. At long last we got the whole headline sets uninterrupted (bar the channel swapping). Long may that continue. If they could just move Glasto or Wimbledon in the diary the two main stages could be live and uninterrupted on the red button all day :-)

Yesterday afternoon, young Jack kitten found a chaffinch nest - with chicks. He killed 2 of the chicks but I managed to get the 3rd one off him. It was still alive, although we held out little hope. We put a tea towel into a basket and put the chick in, tucked the "nest" onto a high shelf and crossed our fingers.

Half an hour later, there was tweeting in the kitchen. I called Wildlife Rescue. No rescue centre near us so they gave us instructions. Mash up cat food (?) with a little water and use a cotton bud to give the chick 3 mouthfuls every half an hour. Little chick would only open his beak when his "nest" was jiggled, so he became Mr Jiggle.

Every 30 minutes, we duly played at being Mummy Chaffinch. He went to bed at 10pm and then I was up at 5.30 this morning. Mr P took him to our vet this morning and they are going to send Mr Jiggle to a bird sanctuary. Will miss the little fellow but it was hard work!

#89 sometimes, I am not even signed in, but have been allowed to write a lengthy tome before it says 'not able to post right now' but what it does not say to me, which it should is 'because you are a numpty and you have to sign in first'!

Watching the tennis online & as usual Murray is making it look like hard work!!

    Event No. 2:

We have put an offer in on a house and it has been accepted! Lovely cottage in mid-Kent, paddock, stables, studio for Mr P.... just perfect. Also, very very scary!

#90 Aww - what a lovely story Alex! Naughty Jack for killing Mr Jiggle's siblings, but I guess he was only doing what comes naturally.

#91 LOL! Yes, that's happened to me too Suzie. Now I usually stay signed in all the time - saves the poor old brain from having to remember.

#94 Yes, bad Jack. Doesn't bode well for our move to the country - he has turned into a killer!

    #95 Thanks Alice!

Ok, ok I take it back. Murray rocks!

#92 - exciting times, but yes scary especially when you start to think about all the packing/unpacking.....feel exhausted for you!

#90 I wonder if the bird sanctuary are interested in common-or-garden pigeon babies? As I left for work, a quite sizeable baby pigeon was on our doormat, looking bereft - and he had done LOTS of what pigeon's do naturally; then another was on the back patio, much smaller but still a pigeon baby - as dead as a dodo. I think the wind blew the nest off the tree (remains of a nest in our small beech tree) or off the roof.

#97, I did wonder if we were watching the same match ;-)

#97 I expect they would take in any baby bird Suzie. If you have an RSPCA vet nearby, take it in. Mr Jiggle did lots of poo-ing as well - we were amazed that something so tiny could generate so much!!

    *Spoiler alert*

By the sounds emanating from the TV, I think Murray has just blown a Gasquet - off the court
