Say Cheese
Bright and sunny here and swifts accompanying my early morning meanderings (could be swallows but I think not). I've never been a birdwatcher but Simon Barnes book 'How To Be A Bad Birdwatcher' a few years ago really changed the way I looked at birds. "To the greater glory of life' is what he put on the cover. He says wherever you are, city or town, you can always see birds and that watching and listening to them is life-enhancing. And he turns out to be right. And the sound of swifts high above feasting (I imagine) on pesky bugs is one of the great noises brought by the warmer weather.
And it's school play season also, at least in this house. Last night saw one of those, now customary, post 7pm dashes. I tend to miss all parents evenings but school productions can be reached. Child 3 was in The Tempest last night and as he was Miranda (it's an all boys school should you be wondering) a big effort was required. All highway code and legal requirements were observed of course-no more speed courses for me thanks very much-parking found-half a mile away-and a less than impressive run brought me to the school hall. I made it in time for Miranda's last line and to join in the whooping and applause. Well done to all!
It's lamb something-or-other in breadcrumbs tonight with Nige (just breadcrumbs for Sally) and let's do the 64th CANNES FILM FESTIVAL oldies. Glamour, glitz and shallowness. Stars, cameras and vacuous nonsense.
Have a positive and inspiring Thursday, see you after 5.

Simon, MTF and I look forward to the arrival of the swallows, swifts and house martins as they herald the sunshine and warmer days. Swifts are sleeker and slimmer (sickle shaped in flight) than swallows, and have a dark underbelly whereas swallows have cream coloured tummies and are a little broader in shape and fly closer to the ground. Watching Simon King and Chris Packham has more benefits than you think! ;-)

A late start for me so I guess I am too late to be making any suggestions. Some excellent choices above!
The reason for my lateness is a crow. Our house used to be occupied by a chappie who is now a Druid hermit in the West Country. He once found an injured crow and nursed it back to health. Descendents of said crow still live in an oak tree 3 doors down.
This morning, Mrs Crow obviously demanded an extension to her already large nest and sent Mr Crow off a-building. He decided our Ash tree would provide good material. I spent a lovely 30 minutes watching him break dead bits off the tree, try to balance them in his beak, drop them, start again. When he finally managed to get full hold of a twig (and at one point, almost a branch), he would fly them to our chimney pot, put them down and then balance them properly before flying it home. Wonderful.
Nature is grand.

The Blue Nile are beautiful, and I would recommend closing the curtains, getting a good coffee, and listening to the whole of the Walk Across The Rooftops album, then 'Hats' then 'Peace at Last' - by which time Simon will be on!

I came home one afternoon and as I opened the patio door I noticed splotches on the floor. Hmm what's that then? I said (out loud as I often talk to myself, hehehe) to which I got an answering bird sound...from the front room. Sat on my windowsill...on the inside...was a Magpie. Not sure how long he'd been in the house, but I surley knew where he had been. He had left quite a lot of...uh hum..tracks between the room window to the kitchen window to the patio door using the telly as a resting stop in between. I had to call my father in law to come and help me get it out of the house. He was there less then a minute. He deftly caught it in a towel and threw it out of the window. I spent over an hour cleaning away all trace of Mr Magpie and made Hubby stuff up the chimney, down which said Magpie and fallen.
On the plus side, we went away for two weeks the day after. It could have happened during our hols and we could have come back to more that just poop.

Bizarrely, the kittens seem to like birds - and not in an eating way. We have a robin who visits daily and sings at us from the lilac tree. Jack sits in the tree as well and tries to sing along! He has shown no interest in catching Mr Robin. And then we have a wee Jenny Wren who is nesting in the lace-cap hydrangea which grows over the outside loo (no loo anymore, just the beer fridge). Rosie uses the hydrangea as a staircase and again, shows little interest in the wren. Our eldest cat shakes her head in dismay as she KNOWS what birds are for......

And after you watch the rehearsal, which is SO great (one of the other 'guests' singing along in the wings) then watch the actual gig...wow! And the way she clings on to him at the end... they obviously didn't do that in the rehearsal, 'cos we've just seen that, and he looks quite unnerved. I love it. Bowie should have the Nobel Prize for something or other... he is wonderful, even today.

I don't think David knew about it at all. He wasn't sure what to do when Annie draped herself over him. She couldn't have got any closer and not through lack of trying, hehehe!

Just rushing in with a suggestion before I try to catch up.
VOGUE - MADONNA, please :)
The youngerGB is at athletics club tonight so I shall spend 45 minutes sitting in the care enjoying the show. I'll pop over for the last 15 minutes so I don't look like an absolutely awful and totally disinterested parent. Last of the SATs today so yippee to that!!!
Back in a bit after a catch up :) ~ xx

#74 I can't find any RAJAR figures for Drivetime, only Chris Evan's Breakfast Show is mentioned in the press release (He's still top dog with 9.53 million listeners)
#70 I'm going to have a look for that on Youtube, I've got quite a soft spot for Mr Bowie myself :D
We've talked about bird watching on here before, and I love it that our garden seems to attract so many varieties of song birds, and the odd sparrow hawk! I could sit and watch them all day, the wonder of nature is a beautiful thing.

The chap next door has two pretty little kittens who are allowed to roam about the neighbourhood day and night. Their beauty, however, belies their true nature, they are so stealthy in their pursuit of their prey from little insects bobbing about on the breeze to, well I reckon they'd take on the Terrifying Terrier from down the road. The other week I looked out the window at the foot of the stairs and saw a fluffy bundle lying in the middle of the grass, there had been a lot of dandelion seeds (fairies) flying around previously and I thought they had landed in a pile in my back garden (!?!) Anyhoo, the elderGB was in the garden and he confirmed that it was in fact the remains of some baby birdies and their nest! The main suspects are the two pretty kitties. Oooh it makes my blood run cold just thinking of it.

However, if the nest was there too, it could have been blown down and then the whoseabadkittythen's could have taken advantage? (She says, desperately trying to stand up for the cat world [with the exception of the evil black cat who lives down our road and is a sadistic bully]).

People used to find the abandoned collar and put it through our letter box, which was quite distressing if Old Boy had wandered off for a day and we hadn't seen him. The other cats then followed suit and used to take their collars off as well so finally we gave up.
Our guys really don't seem that interested in birds though - mice are the prey of choice for the older cats and the kittens are practicing on worms. Nice.

Zoe - good picture. I think I prefer it to the one that was posted on FB yesterday.
Toots - I think those naughty kitties should be introduced to my own Terrifying Terrier. He seems to think any neighbourhood cats who dare to venture into his territory are fair game.
I've been playing 'Google yourself' (you can tell I'm bored...) Apparently under my real name I'm a well known American blues singer. I've also Googled my various aliases and all I've come up with that's actually me is a Top Gear fan site that I'm officially still a member of, but haven't posted on for ages. Seriously though, it's quite encouraging to know that my online details are still fairly secure - it is something that causes me a mite of concern from time to time.
