Simon Mayo|06:06 UK time, Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Just a wee word.

Not on the show today as I have a funeral to attend and Richard Allinson will take up the reins. But last night your Drivetime team emerged triumphant with the Sony Gold for best Music show. This was a fantastic result for us as we are all very proud of the show. John Dunn, Johnnie Walker and Chris Evans gave the show it's reputation and to carry on its success is enormously satisfying. And the fact that you guys help with the music every day, means that you should all take a bow!

Jezza Vine had an even bigger night, winning 2 golds-well done to Jeremy and the team.

So thanks to Matt, Rebecca and Sally for making the show what it is and the off-air team who lovingly construct the show by hand every day;Gary Bones, Andy Warrell, Carmella Di Clemente, Ben Backhouse and Johnny Kotsiofides.

Trebles all round.

Lets hope the blog continues to be the creative flow of consciousness it always seems to be!

Have a top Tuesday and I'll be back on Drivetime tomorrow.

And thank you so much Simon for taking time on your day off to write us a blog - I think I speak for us all on here when I say how much we appreciate the way you include us and interact with us here on the blog. MANY CONGRATULATIONS Simon.... not forgetting Matt (always LOVE his laugh) Rebecca, Sal and Nige, on your well deserved award, for the best show on the radio! :o)

Thank you Simon for letting us bloggers and tweeters feel a part of your show too, with our song choices, texts and tweets! :o))

Good morning award-winning Lord Ammo, award-winning team, award-winning NYM and award-winning bloggers!

How good does that sound! Many much-deserved congratulations. Have you been promoted to Duke of Ammo now? Do we need to call you sir? And do you get a little trophy to proudly display on the window sill of the downstairs loo? We need a photo.

Would also like to endorse the award for Ronnie Wood. Am not a Stones fun, and he usually irritates me - but I'm typically picking up Good Child #2 around 10.30pm on a Sat night, and it's become a routine to listen to Ronnie's show in the car - and you know what, he's very good, and the music he plays is excellent (apart from the irritating ads on those commercial stations).

    Good day all.

Well done on the award, most deserving (if that's not too ostentatious). We just make the suggestions for some of the music, it's the DT Team that actually plays it, so pats on the back all round - hoorah!

    Hurrah - we're back again!

Drivetime Dude and Team Cool - massive congratulations! Utterly completely deserved.

Also - it's grand to have the names of the Constructors - Gary, Andy, Carmella, Ben & Johnny.

So that's all OK then. Year 1 - Gold Sony. What a contract! You're there, we're here - lines of communication well and truly open ... let's do it again, eh?

There's a lot of love flowing around this place, so I'm rather pleased the Beeb's Routine Maintenance has been routinely maintained and we are allowed back in to express it.

#17 I agree KatyMatey - it's good to give a shout out to the background team. We tend to forget about them beavering away, making the show the well-oiled machine that it is (most of the time!). Actually, I've heard of Carmella before - I think Graham Norton mentioned her in one of his shows recently. I remembered because it's an unusual name. I wonder which one is the NYM...

I definitely think this calls for a Drivetime convention! The TOGs have them, and Sir Terry usually puts in an appearance. I'm sure Lord Ammo and the gang would be happy to do likewise. Simon, if you're looking for someone to organise it, you know where I am...

Well done Viscount Ammo and the team - without doubt the best show, and very much in the spirit of informed, intelligent, entertaining, witty radio... with great music. My listening in this slot goes back to John Dunn (maybe before, but my memory doesn't go back that far!), and the one thing our show has that JD didn't have is this lovely blog!

Sorry to hear you have to attend a funeral Simon... in as much as these thing can never "go well", I hope it goes well (if that makes sense).

    Responding to PoS's theme....

  • Comment number 56.

Congrats to Simon and the team.

Have to admit I was one of the moaners who really didn't like it when Simon sat in for Chris when he was our Drivetime guru. Thought Simon was boring and he just didn't do it for me - but I realise now that was because it wasn't his show and a couple of weeks covering isn't enough time to stamp your mark on something.

I now really enjoy Drivetime and think the elements that make it Simon's show are great, Homework Sucks, Confessions etc and love it when Matt gets the giggles when Sally says " ...that reminds me of a time when ...."

Radio 2 really is a fantastic station with great music and brilliant presenters - although I still have a problem with Steve 'Smarmy' Wright!

How lovely to pop in and find a new blog (when we weren't expecting one) from our award winning Lord Ammo. Huge congratulations to both the on-air and off-air teams, it's a fantastic show and the award was very much deserved. A big thank you too, as others have said, for letting us be a small part of the show with our oldie suggestions, texts/tweets etc.

    Apprentice tunes eh? How about...

FIRE - THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN ;)

And on songs for success for Simon & Co - Dressed For Success - Roxette.

  • Comment number 60.

~57 Morning Mr Snapper (or - as it is now - Good Afternoon)...

Are you indeed a fan of the impish little one? I do like some of the early Corrs songs, but I think they got so manicured that they forgot how to make great records, and I think Andrea on her own is a bit precious really. But she is mightily pretty when she forgets to look so serious. Sat behind all four of them on a flight from London to Manchester once - they all looked really grumpy! She's covered Tinseltown in the Rain with big rocky drums, and strident, earnest singing... it's just wrong! It must be very tempting when you are in the music biz to cover your favourite songs, but I think the Blue Nile are difficult to cover.

  • Comment number 61.

#30 & #35 B&B, fool that I am, I just had to have a listen. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

I could forgive her (with her sisters and brother) for ruining Fleetwood Mac's Dreams as she at least had the good sense to perform it on TOTP in front of a spotlight so we could see right through her dress and so be distracted from the carnage that was being enacted before our ears. But this? Does it have any redeeming features?

  • Comment number 62.

    #61 no! X

  • Comment number 63.

    Forgot to say earlier....

Simon, as you're now wearing your sparkly Sony crown and clutching your award as you grace the halls of Radio-2-land land, your colleagues doffing their caps and tugging their forelocks as you sweep past, and still glowing from the massive pay rise which I'm sure has been bestowed upon you, perhaps you could apply some gentle pressure to the IT operatives to fix some of the niggles on this blog??

Who knows, next you could be in line for the Sony award for "Best use of interactive technology in radio"?

  • Comment number 64.

I know someone who used to go out with Andrea when they were young 'uns

    A.

  • Comment number 65.

#61 #64 - I didn't think the "Dreams" cover was TOO bad - might if I heard it now - but do agree that presentation is eight tenths of the job done! I do love the Dixie Chicks cover of "Landslide" though... but they are in a different league. A friend of mine went on a cheap Ryanair weekend to Dublin a few years back with a friend, although they were really going independently of one another to visit different friends. The friend of the friend went off to a party on the Saturday night, and later in the evening called her to say it was a really good party and that she should come along. Gave her the address etc. My friend went along, found it to be in a posh house in a posh part of Dublin, rang the doorbell, and found that when it was opened she was face to face on the doorstep with Bono. He let her in to find her friend, and found that apart from a dozen or so unknown party guests, the rest of the party consisted of all four boys from U2, Mick Jagger and Ronnie Wood, and all four of the Corrs. A good night was, I gather, had by all!

As we are constantly being told that we should be very excited about the new series which will be broadcast this week, I would like to say that I have more worthwhile matters to get excited about. LOL.

#79 - I have to say Katymac, I have never 'got' Apprentice. My sister seems to think that it is the best thing since sliced bread but I just cannot be bothered with it!

    A.

  • Comment number 81.

#79,#80 - I caught the end of one episode of the last series and that was enough for me! I think I may have mentioned on here at the time about self-important twerps (or words to that effect), and having heard a trailer for the new programme on R2 yesterday, my opinion hasn't changed!

  • Comment number 82.

#79 & #80 I can't be doing with The Apprentice, and Siralan gets right on my bits! Each to their own though, I suppose.

It's all about parading a bunch of numpties around for the public's entertainment, rather than finding the next rising star in business, in my humble opinion of course! But then people wouldn't watch otherwise, just as they wouldn't watch X Factor and BGT if they weren't essentially freak shows.

  • Comment number 83.

#80 JustPlainAlice, I love The Apprentice and I'm warming to Karren Brady, but still miss Margaret and her facial expressions and I love Nick! I hope there will be another Stuart Baggs this time! :o))

  • Comment number 84.

    #79 thru #83

Totally agree - but I'm afraid I love it; if only for their sheer nincompoopness in some of the screaming errors they make. Along with all the back-stabbing and numptiness-bravado that only modern-age yuppies seem to be able to manage.

Brilliant TV! The only comedy show I like on the box at the moment ;-)

  • Comment number 85.

Best I steer clear of the AS subject :-)

  • Comment number 86.

I think The Apprentice is like any of these 'reality' shows (Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity, even the more quality ones such as Masterchef) - once you start watching, you somehow get drawn in almost against your better judgement, until you feel compelled to watch week after week. Luckily for me I'm out on Tuesday evenings, so I won't be tempted to even start watching.

Tortie - did anyone answer your question about your mensh? It was right in the middle of the interview with the Book Club author - about 6.20, I think.

On which subject, I'm definitely going to give yesterday's book choice a go. I have a psychology degree, and some of the people I work with have a professional interest in the area of memory and what happens when it doesn't work properly. It sounds like a fascinating book - and I'm also curious to find out how well a male author tackles writing in the first person as a woman!

    ~X~

  • Comment number 87.

#86 Deebee, I found it, thanks!

I'm not sure about yesterday's book choice; I read the first chapter yesterday, and it reminded me a bit of The Time Traveller's Wife - which I hated! I think I'll wait and see what other people think?

Sad to hear you're at a funeral today, Simon. I hope it went as well as these things can go.

I had a note to apologose for my absinthe earlier but it got lost under the landslide of papers on my desk.

I was desperate to get on yesterday to hear all about the Cambridge weekend. Looking at the fotos on FB, it would appear a good time was had by all.

Off to get tea ready for the hungry hordes (is that right type of horde?) Anyhoo, really hoping to get back later for a mahoosive catch up.

    Cheerio for now.

#92 there's an 'out' that needs inserting on the second line directly after 'with' ;)

#92. I think that yoo've claimed the top spot in the prevoiusly unknown competition for the most double o words in a single post. Something to do with the name, I reckon. ;0)

What started out as a rain soaked, thundery day has finished off with bright sunshine and, all-in-all, a very pleasant evening.

Tie for me to wrap up for the day.

Wonder how the menshes will work tonight? I think they may all come from Facebook but, wherever they come from, I hope all that want them, get them.

Have a nice evening and see you all tomorrow.

I really think we ought to be able to get past 100 posts before Simon's return tomorrow.

I'd just like to say how much I'm enjoying listening to Richard Allinson this evening - a worthy stand in for our esteemed leader.

    Hello Everyone

This is the first chance I've had to post because the blog wouldn't let me in this morning and I've been out all day.

I would like to add my congratulations to Simon & Team on the Award. It really is a super show and it's lovely for us bloggers to play a little part in it.

Simon - I would also like to say that it was kind and thoughtful of you to take time to post a blog this morning on what must be a difficult day. I hope the funeral went as well as could be hoped.

    Love

    BP

I love John Allen's version of 'Angie' too.
