Kate the 1st

Simon Mayo|06:45 UK time, Thursday, 19 May 2011

Let me talk of Kate Bush first. I see a few reminiscences on yesterdays blog about the albums, the only tour, and the free kisses (really?). It's an age and stage thing of course, as they say in parenting circles. I remember waiting for the radio to play Wuthering Heights. I'd heard it only once but hooked me at the first 'Out on the windy, windy moor'. Everytime it was played I turned it up and everything else had to stop. When 'The Kick Inside' came out I poured over the lyrics and photos (I was 17) and found it all very deep and meaningful. She was the epitome of the girl who was brighter and cleverer than you. Read books, made literary observations and wore a leotard. And so I did what anyone would do. I wrote to EMI and asked for a poster. I said it was for the student union building at Warwick Uni where in actual fact, its final resting place was my bedroom wall. The poster was the pink vest one, in case you were wondering. She gazed on my 3 years of History and Politics and helped me through the dark nights of Stalin, European 19th century colonialism and English Civil War. I know she feels this affinity too.Even if she does talk to Ken Bruce. And Mark Radcliffe.

(Wakes from trance) Ah yes the show. It's a Nigel day today so we are talking Kerala Crab Masala. Can't be doing with crab myself, put off by my grandmother's half-consumed pots of crab paste. But once Nige has worked his magic, I'm sure all will be lovely.

And songs today for THE OLYMPIC TORCH. One year today it will arrive in Cornwall and go on tour around the UK, ending in the Olympic stadium in July. 8000 miles and 8000 torchbearers needed. So TORCHES, FLAMES AND SPORTY CELEBS should do it.

If Kate Bush wanted a run out...

Have a smile filled and productive Thursday, see you after 5.

Morning folks - Simon and team included! Oh Simon - I too had that poster on my cell wall (sorry - hall of residence room wall)... happy days. There was a receptionist at my dentist at the time who was about five years older than me, who was the spitting image of Kate Bush, a girl by the name of Rashida. And I gathered from other sources that she rather liked me. And, as Kajagoogoo would encapsulate it a few years later, I was too shy....

    Anyway....

    TORCH - Soft Cell

    ought to get us started?

Well, ok, they're actually passing a torch. But they are starting in Cornwall, so once they get to Devon the runners can say "We've passed the Duchy".

  • Comment number 22.

#20 Too risky, Billie, to give the GT&Ts the torch - they'll sell it for scrap metal. Or set fire to all those thatched roofs in Devon and Cornwall.

Lovely Kate Bush memories from Simon ;) KB was an aquired taste for me, I didn't really start to appreciate her music until I was in my teens, but many of her songs are now favourites of mine. I particularly like Running Up That Hill, and I also like the Placebo version of that song too.

On the oldies, I'll just choose a couple for now (unless further inspiration strikes!)

SHINING LIGHT - ASH or ANNIE LENNOX

LOVE SHINE A LIGHT - KATRINA AND THE WAVES

I'M ON FIRE or FIRE - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

  • Comment number 59.

Good morning all from a bright and sunny London!

We had an apology for a rain shower yesterday evening - didn't even dampen the dust and not a whiff of petrichore. The watering can went into service and my drooping pansies are looking happier. Talking of pansies, young Captain Jack was walking around this morning with a pansy petal stuck to his nose. Think he is trying to be incognito in case the nasty black cat turns up.

Mr P managed an injury free evening and is looking forward to the removal of the tooth this morning. (MTF - what is the going rate these days?). He didn't listen to Kate last night but has promised himself an afternoon of Kate-ness to aid recovery. I will report back.

We continued the discussion of male/female new talent over dinner and Mr P made a really good point. Unfortunately, I have forgotten it. It will come back, I am sure.

No suggestions from me for today's theme - the early birds can happily have the worm.

    I will be back.

Given the various topics, the track "Burning Bridge" from Kate's album "Hounds of Love" seems appropriate. Looking forward to sampling her "Directors Cut" album shortly.

This blog has opened my eyes to a plethora of music that I wouldn't otherwise know about and thanks to Spotify (I am sure that other services exist) I am able to sample said music. I have next to no musical knowledge, I only know what I like, which thanks to this 'ere blog is ever expanding.

Alex-Girl (59) and Zoe (61) - you'll both be back. Looks like Arnie has been busier than ever. Wonder if he said that to Mrs S as he popped downstairs to fix the boiler....

  • Comment number 66.

#58 Zoe, Dermot O'Leary played Bat for Lashes doing an 'in-session' cover of I'm on Fire last Saturday. It's still available on the listen again thingy (at about 2hrs 21mins) I was quite taken with it but it may not be to everyone's taste.

I'd be interested to hear what other people think of it.

  • Comment number 67.

#65 Unfortunately, the boiler was in a small, inaccessible cupboard and what Arnie ACTUALLY said was "ooh, my back".

I have remembered Mr P's good point about the seeming lack of new male solo artists. I won't put it as eruditely as he did but he comment was along the lines of men preferring to play instruments and therefore being in a band situation was more appealing. He is finding this at the college he teaches at where the singers course is primarily female and, for their performance pieces, tend to choose solo material. The chaps on the course opt for a band performance. Please forgive if this sounds like gender stereo-typing - not meant to be. Just an opinion, for your debate!

Btw, one of Mr P's students, a 19 year old bass player, has just discovered Scott Henderson. Well done that boy.

Anyway, back to Kate whose warblings were also to be heard from my top floor (7th floor ) student room back in the day...it was a special sound, for a special time I like to think. Although I absolutely LOVE Arial - her album (can one still say that) before this current one.

I considered going to Warwick. Went on the visit (the impression was of lots of white/grey buildings). The Arts centre looked fantastic and had a national reputation (used to appear on tour itineraries for bands) but I decided it was too far out of Coventry so went to Reading.

Reading, it transpired, was so close to London that nothing of any interest ever happened in Reading and everyone spent the weekend getting out of the place. Dr George Norman in the Economics Dept actually listed the north, south, east and west-bound travel capability from Reading station as being the town's best feature :-)

I believe Reading has improved significantly in the 30 years since then.

'76 Tori's a bit of an acquired taste. I saw her at the RFH around the time of Choirgirl Hotel album. It was a solo gig, just her, piano and harpsichord and I was rather mesmerised by the performance. I didn't believe one person on stage would be able to grab my attention for the whole length of the show like that, but she did.

She's not someone I can listen to very often though, need to be really in the mood for it. I have the first half dozen or so albums but haven't bought anything recently.

#83 Harry - listened to Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" album on the way to work this morning.....fantastic! Well, I say "listened"..... more "endured". Highly recommended to those wishing to be both challenged and entertained today - especially his Bryan Ferry impression in "Dead Finks Don't Talk".

  • Comment number 90.

#86 KTMac, according to Brewer, the people of Coventry so hated soldiers that if a woman was spotted speaking to one, she was outlawed. Consequently, for a soldier to be "sent to Coventry" he was effectively being shut off from all social intercourse.

Gazza - I smiled to myself when I heard you were first out the trap again yesterday m' Lovely. ElaineMary, I thought to myself, 'don't remember 'seeing' EM on the blog today but good choon nonetheless.' I also heard menshes for Mediterranean Mo, Wharfdale Gas (i liked SM's comment). I'm afraid the old memory isn't making the appropriate connections (although there are plenty to choose from allegedly) for me to remember all the other menshes I heard. Good show last night. I think I would have forgiven the confessor. It's not the first time I've been shadowed by our techie guys. In fact I had to remind the chap yesterday what he'd done previously to fix an IT prob I had.

Harry - hope your car gets well soon. I knew there was something else I wanted to comment on yesterday morning but didn't remember 'til I saw your au revoir at the end of the day.

I saw Kate Bush perform at the Royal Albert Hall at a concert featuring other guest appearances by Cliff Richard and Labi Siffre, but mainly it was Ron Goodwin & His Orchestra. I didn't realise the guests would sing only one or two songs and then disappear for the rest of the show.

I suggest: LIGHT MY FIRE by Minnie Riperton (with a guest appearance by Jose Feliciano towards the end of the song). Other versions of this song are often and this one deserves more R2 airplay.

FLAMES by Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera.

Songs from the TORCH album by Carly Simon.

(I'm pleased that Simon did not choose currently-in-the-news Ken Clarke or rape as today's theme. Although Old Brown Shoe by The Beatles might be appropriate for Ken Clarke)

I didn't manage to get too much listening done as I had a rather lengthy phone conversation with my big sis - discussing residential care for our wee mummy - not as awful as anticipated actually. Sis is doing a grand job of convincing Mum it's the best thing for her. Fingers crossed we can get her in to our first choice (a bit like trying to get children into school - v strange). Then I was engaged in a pool tournie with the youngerGB - he trounced me apu. However, once I got some time to myself, I listened to The Cowboy Junkies, Black Eyed Man - very mellow for an evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had a listen to the first few tracks of a Peter Gabriel CD which is in fact a greatest hits compilation (Shaking the Tree) with a new track included. There are contributions from Stewart Copeland, Youssou N'Dour and the very lovely Kate Bush. Must try listening to more of KB's stuff and see if I can be swayed one way or the other.

Are you aware you've just repeated your list of tunes #73 plus a few from #74 and others that have gone before?

JPA and ZoeUU - from before - I popped you in with the esteemed musos as you have a quality I really admire - your knowledge may not be as great as some on here(definitely better than mine) but you make time to listen to new stuff suggested on here, as does Mo. I'm trying to be better at listening to 'new to me' stuff. I gave John Martin a listen recently and enjoyed it.

Btw, forgot to say earlier a huge well done to all menshees yesterday, there seemed to be a fair few for the blog.

#65 - JbG - It must be the exam stress getting to you m' Lovely.

    #89 - B&B - liked your wee joke - made me chuckle.

Ooooh not sure if I'm all caught up or not but scrolling up and down is making my eyes go funny.

    I also had a goo*le -

Strong civil war connections with the phrase.

Also the Covin Tree was the gallows.

No one really knows the true origins - which makes it all the more interesting.
