He really did sound as though he was in shock yesterday - agh! Horrible sounding injury, made me screw my face up at the windscreen as he described it. Their stuff has a tendancy to be contemplative and a bit downbeat though :/ I have listened to 'The Wall' MANY times, it being one of Mr Moogs favourite albums, ever. I think my personal favourite song from it would be COMFORTABLY NUMB, but like I said it's a bit grim for an ARFO.

Well, the good news at this end is that I have heard back from my Tokyo friends and all is well, so that's at least one positive tick for the day. And - checking up on my ambition to live for ever, today is my 18,589th consecutive day of success for the project!!! Not a birthday, just another chalk malk on the wall...

Good Morning Each! For my ARF this week, I have actually sat down and given it some thought, rather than the normal, 'I quite fancy hearing that'. Seeing as lots of those listening will be driving, as reflected in the name of the show, a decent 'driving sopng' would seem to be called for, as Simon hints at above. I take that gentle nudge, and considering that a good driving song needn't neccessarily be ABOUT driving, but rather a good accompaniment TO driving, I find myself with two choices. Seeing as one of these has already been asked for (a bit), by MTF, I will plump for t'other, and say, Simon, NNYM and team, would you please give some consideration to starting the show with...

What I certainly wouldn't want is to be sat on a Pacific Island right now being told that there is a 100m high wave heading in my direction and knowing that the highest land is only 95m!

Horrible news from Japan, that side of the globe really seems to be getting hit horribly at the moment.



The Wall - the first chance to see it since the last time Roger carted it round the world. Keeps Snowy White nicely employed and able to enjoy his own White Flames and blues projects in between :-).



Does anyone remember the version Waters did alongside the Berlin Wall? Went out live on one of the TV stations. I remember Snowy White standing on one tower and Andy Fairweatherlow on the other as the main guitarists, I think the Scorpions may have been the "surrogate band", and there were various other guests. Definitely Van Morrison, maybe Sinead O'Conner?



They had terrible sound problems and there were chunks where songs ground to a halt where nobody knew what was going on. I think they all stayed behind afterwards and did another run through of chunks of it to ensure they had the ability to put out the live album and DVD afterwards.



It was painful viewing at the time. Personally, I don't think Comfortably Numb works without Gilmour's voice. Everyone thinks about his guitar work, but his voice was essential in much of the Floyd's best work IMO.



Would like to have seen the original tour - there's definitely a live album that's been made from that tour called "Is There Anybody Out There?" - shame it never had a DVD version, although I think Roger may have an additional solo "Wall" DVD on top of the Berlin job.

#53 - here's a thing, and you;re right Harry - never want to offend anyone by talking about religion, but I had a long chat once with a completely bonkers woman who apart from being bonkers was also a missionary zealot who would not accept anyone else's view of god but her own. And I hit her with the "but if God is so kind why does he allow four year old children to die painfully" argument. And what she said was that (to paraphrase)our lives in God are eternal. They have no beginning and no end. Our lives on this earth are so short they are worth nothing other than for what we can give back to God while we are here. But it doesn't matter whether we live eight months or eighty years, because our life in God is eternal. Now - I'm not going to make any comment on that, but it is an argument in defence of events like today from a certain corner of the Christian community.



On another subject....(cos my blogging time is limited today, so I am cramming everything into one post for now!)... I always suggest songs that I'd like to hear, and it's great to get a mention, and I also know that every one of us has different taste and that - particularly as Simon's is such a good show - it must reflect a broad range of tastes - so I never complain if I don't agree with the songs played. But I do get a bet fed up of "The Final Countdown", Michael Jackson, "Simply the Best" and "Something by Queen" on ARF!!! I can cope with Brucie - I'm not a big fan, but I love Dancing in the Dark and Born to Run, and if far too much Bowie, Beatles, Cure or Smiths were played I would never complain once! But Tina, Michael, Freddie and The Final Countdown belong on another show somewhere further down the dial!!!

#64 B&B I thought the answer to - Why does God let bad things happen? Was that he gave us free will :-/ I have heard about our lives being eternal through God though, and if you are a believer I suppose that must bring much comfort at times of hardship and great sorrow. I tend to think religion was invented as a way of getting people to accept, and endure terrible things in this life, in hopes of being rewarded in the next life. I could be wrong, but religion seems to flourish and be stronger in places of great suffering and deprivation.



On the music issue - I have sort of come to accept that ARF will generally be a mix of ABBA, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Status Quo with the odd bit of Michael Jackson or Madonna thrown in for good measure! There is the OCCASIONAL unexpected delight, but by and large ARF offers no great musical surprises. I still listen though, and will keep listening (although I am less sad if I miss Friday's Drivetime than the Mon-Thur shows) A bit more variety wouldn't go a miss! I hope NYM or whoever peruses this blog, takes that as constructive criticism because I DO love the show, and have been a loyal listener since day one! :) Mind you, as the choice is down to whoever phones in, I don't suppose Simon and the team can be held responsible for it, unless they turn away perfectly good tunes in favour of old faithfuls!!

#71 - Mrs M - I think you are right to a degree. Some days I am a card carrying atheist, and some days I fall on my knees and ask for forgiveness! I am a bit like Rory McG the other night - you can't escape your upbringing, however much you run. When I'm in a cynical mood though, I often think that religion was invented so that blokes could get their washing done for free AND get the best cheese, while wifey slaved away and made do with the scraps. And it still feels like that sometimes. That rule applies to pre-Christian religions and to the Church of England - all this hoo ha about women vicars... the argument being that in a church men should do the important stuff and women clean the brasses! But - when I have a church it is a Methodist one - we don't have any of that nonsense. Plenty of female ministers and not a lot of brass. And plenty of hymns!



ARF...some weeks it's great, because there will be a whole host of songs that I could have picked - one week fairly recently had REM followed by XTC followed by Talking Heads one after another - my perfect night in! And some weeks ain't so good for my tastes. An d I agree about Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - there must be other hen night songs out there? Apart from Dancing Queen. I very often request a stomping glam guitar-heavy classic for the opener - Sweet, Slade, TRex etc, because I think they sound great coming out after a long bit of serious stuff on the news. So to that end, while it's a bti late in the day, let's go for another pop at...

B&B - live and let live, that's what I say (see my reply to Mrs Moog's blog). But can I just take you to task on one thing - your comment that religion was 'invented'. That implies that someone consciously thought it up as a good idea - a bit like a bagless vacuum cleaner or a phone you can carry around with you. But people who have faith in a higher being aren't necessarily making the decision to believe as some sort of addition to their life that will improve it in some way (although I agree that does sometimes happen). In fact, some people come to a belief in God almost against their will. Such as CS Lewis, for example.

#88 Debbie...well, you know, I do wonder whether religion (as opposed to faith) was "invented". Faith is something you or I either have or don't have within ourselves - faith is the belief. "Religion" is the organisation of that belief into a structure that works for society, so Islam, Christianity, Hinduism etc, and then sub divided into Catholicism, Sunni, Methodism etc. Now I think that individuals can develop faith independently (or as you say even against their will) but religion is an imposed structure which tells us HOW to use our faith. Which is why people with devout faith rarely cause trouble in the world but religions cause more trouble than anything else apart from malaria! And I can't help thinking that most of the religions in the world favour blokes and give them all the power and give the women the rubbish jobs to do. Sorry to still be being a bit heavy, man! Lets have a song...
