Getting there (slowly)
Greetings and good morning to all bloggers. Especially to new contributors, freshly arrived - you are very welcome. Thanks for all the advice and sympathy for my dodgy back. Thanks also for the recommendations of treatments, potions and witch doctors. I'm just back from my osteopath (7am appointment! How keen is that!) and had more needles in my back than my grandma's had in her sewing basket. I am hardly leaping and jumping but hopefully might manage the double show day with a degree of honour and respectability. The taxibike is a no no of course but the Radio 2 sedan chair would be welcome. Though it's quite booked up at the moment apparently.
Really enjoyed hearing Robert Plant on with Chris this morning. We spoke at the Electric Proms (may they rest in peace) and know him to be charming and a great music historian. But hearing his stories and music choice made me want to have lots more! Let's book him to dep for Bob Harris. And to have Buddy Miller load up your ipod with 31,000 songs! Now that I would like to have.
So it's 5 Live(Mr Plant's favourite) from 2 for some movie conversation and Mark Kermode and then, through the barricades, the sunlit uplands of the all-request-Friday.
Get that show opener down now. Impress your friends! Be the talk of the blog!
Have an energy filled and exuberant Friday. See you after 5.

HONALOOCHIE BOOGIE - Mott The Hoople

Simon, back pain is pure evil. A word from the wise ... my back problems are always triggered by the wrong chair - sitting slumped on the sofa/armchair in the wrong position, or , more commonly, the wrong position at your desk, especially if you're always reaching out with one hand on a mouse or to twiddle all those buttons in the studio. It creeps up on you, puts your back under strain without you noticing, and then, "Ping!", it will snap at the slightest little thing, like emptying the dishwasher or sneeezing.
Don't twist, don't hunch, don't get stuck in one position. Be kind to your back.
Which leads me nicely to today's ARFO suggestions, which might just reflect what you're feeling at the moment.
DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER = OASIS

Having suffered back problems for years Simon, my advice is to find two or three children under the age of six, lie on the floor face down, and have them step onto your ankles and walk the full length up to your head before they climb off. It does wonders for the back. Sadly, my helpers are all over six foot tall now and too heavy to help. One word of advice though - tell them that when they get to the top, step off carefully AND NO JUMPING. I learned that to my peril quite early on. But it works, and it's free, and the kids love it. Afterwards you feel fantastic!

Billie - Ricky Skaggs was a really frantic country and western song - I had a vision of Dolly Parton running around on the Benny Hill show. Are she and Barbara Windsor twins separated at birth?

PSL - fantastic choice.
Harry the Snapper - excellent, and congrats on your first mensh.
Is it just me or is there a lot more country being played on DT at the mo?
Oh, one more thing to Simon or the NYM - why don't you dig out the version of "Enjoy Yourself" recorded at the Folk Awards a couple of weeks ago, and use it as an alternative version after 6? Just an idea.

As for more country being on DT, I think there's a lot more country and folk around generally, as the routine "pop" music scene (that word dates me) is so moribund. Used to be that pop music was eclectic, cool, funky, inspiring, fun... all the things it nowawdays ain't (barring, of course, several notable exceptions), and more people are finding the kind of wit and song-writing skill and passion and style in what used to be more minority genres in the UK. That's my MA thesis on the subject anyway. On a more mundane note - when is Pancake Tuesday?? Have I missed it?

Barry Coope sings a mean harmony. To hear them sing "Lay Me Low" is one of life's pleasures.

Glad that Holly is better, csn.
Hi Alison- my son could eat 8 pancakes in one sitting when he was little! I couldn't cook them fast enough! Makes me feel quite ill remembering it. He is now nearly 22, is as thin as a rake and still has hollow legs! (Not fair!)

For me, it's the Richie Buckley solo when he's in Van Morrison's band during live versions of the Summertime in England/Common One combo, right after Van says "Go Ahead and squeal!" And squeal he does :-).

There's a local band here in Cumbria, The Olly Alcock Band, with a female, and blonde, saxophonist. She's superb! They play some great blues.

My twins will be home any second, bringing with them their own special brand of havoc and pandemonium, so I'd better jump to it!
