A day for bellowing
A tad bleary, welcome to Tuesday. A late evening of course at the Folk Awards last night. I hope you enjoyed the show from the Brewery (Mike Harding's confession was really rather fine) and then the show itself. As ever, it featured the combination of superb, wonderfully performed music and extraordinarily misjudged speeches. A great number of times I was moved to think 'It's not about you!'. The speeches from the winners were always charming and humble but so many times the prize givers got the tone all wrong (step forward Tamsin Greig, Joanna Trollope and others) resulting in embarrassed glances from the gathered folkies. Say hello, announce the winner and get off.
Anyway the show's highlights for me were the stunning, and ghostly white, Laura Marling, Chris Wood, Bellowhead and Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends who managed to make everyone laugh and then then sing lustily. Top stuff.
Today we bring you the Radio 2 Book Club again with Paul Torday's "More Than You Can Say". His break through was "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" which was a huge hit and this is shaping up to be another remarkable achievement. Matt and Rebecca might even say it's their favourite so far! You can read a chapter on this site for free and then hear Paul after 6.
For the oldies, inspired by the good men of Port Isaac, let's do FISH, FISHING, and FISHERMEN. And plenty to choose from there I would think.
Have a gentle and reflective Tuesday, see you after 5

Last night was a real revelation for me. I hadn't realised I had such a narrow view of what folk music was like. I will definitely be listening to Mike Harding's show more.
How about DOWNEASTER ALEXA by Billy Joel.

We watched most of the awards programme 'via the red button' and thoroughly enjoyed it, apart from the prize givers' speaches - Tamsin Greig was dreadful! I did manage to spot Simon when the camera was panning around the room, and lots of other celebs too.
All the sensible suggestions have been taken, so I will go for:
DOWN BY THE SEA from The Little Mermaid
or SLEEPY SHORES the theme tune to Owen MD (many years ago) - it could, as PoS would say, be used as a 'bed'

Enjoyed the broadcast last eve. Thought it was rather more low key than previous ones requiring Bellowhead, Fishermans Friends and the Levellers to up the fun factor ante. I am also a real fan of Chris Woods - he had his serious songwriter hat on last night, but please look out for him in other guises, particularly with The Imagined Village. We saw little of his mischievous humour last night.
For those that have indicated that they either avoided or were unaware of 'folk music', perhaps the phrase Folk/Roots/Acoustic music is more descriptive.
And as Mrs Moog said yesterday [and my other half will SWEAR that I say this all the time] "I am a fan of good music, not of any particular genre"
We had the fish theme back in September, I think.
MTF, I and a few others spun off into orbit with puns galore!

Thoroughly enjoyed folk awards last night, but agree with Simon... did Tamsin G really mean to be rude to Mike Harding, or did it "just come out wrong"? Did Joanna Trollope mean to say "rock music"? Did Frank Skinner mean to be funny? Jeremy Vine did okay I thought. And Chris Wood was fab, Levellers likewise....worried that Donovan's lovely voice and range seemed to be leaving him though, and great to see the buddha that is Danny Thompson backing him up. Great show - well done everyone (nearly!). Surprised to hear my Donovan anecdote read out - thanks Simon - and I don't think Don remembered it as clearly as I did!

I find it difficult to come up with theme related choons too so just hang out here for the banter, bon mots and to fill in the gaps in my education. The gawjus blogpoppets are all so clever with their choon punnage - I love it - always makes me smile and there are the odd tea on screen moments, too.
B&B - I didn't hear Donovan sing - I had some rowdy teenagers in my car. Must try to listen at a time more convenient - may even press the red button for the highlights.
Re: Folk - I didn't realise that Simon and Garfunkel were considered folk artists - I love their music - individually and collectively. I enjoyed the Bellowhead choon CLP played this morning - it sounded v jolly. Are Fleet Foxes considered to be in the folk genre? I like them and there's another group that I like the sound of but can't remember their name - fairly new on the scene, I think and are played on Radio 1 as well as Radio 2. Their choons seem to be relatively lively too. I enjoy good music of any genre really - an eclectic taste in music I think is the phrase that suffers from overusage.
I liked Mike Harding's confession too - a bit predictable but well presented and very entertaining - made me chuckle whilst preparing the sandwiches for today's lunch.
B & B - you may have gathered the grindstone has slowed a bit.

RABBIT RUN DEMOLISHED!
Couldn't believe the wind wrecked Bernie's run - having said that I think it's fixable so not as bad as first anticipated.

Fleet Foxes I would say should class as folk. I'm not sure Paul is right about the other group you like the sound of being Mumford and Sons though, because thye don't get played as much as you seemed to suggest.
