Ermine! Not Vermin!
A fox-free blog. Up late, wake early. No alarms needed after yesterdays debacle. I was so determined not to sleep in again that I woke at 4 and stayed that way. Head full of last night's recording of "Act Your age" for Radio 4 which was fun I think, with its usual mix of funny stuff for broadcast and funny stuff which will never see the light of day. Unless someone leaks it and a bootleg turns up, in which case you might hear some interesting exchanges with comedian Miles Jupp, formerly Archie from Balamory.
However the tiredest folk are their Lord and Ladyships in the the House of Lords. They are in the middle of marathon sessions at the moment, debating constitutional matters. Staying up all night, debating all morning and afternoon. It's a tough life, so lets do songs for LADIES and LORDS please.
Talking books today with actor David Morrissey. He's one of the judges for the Costa Book Awards this year and he'll be explaining how it works at 6. Also yesterday we announced that the next book club choice is "Rivers of London" by Ben Aaronovitch. It's a fantasy about wizards and coppers. For grown-ups. Check it out on the Book Club section of the website, there's a chapter for you to read to see if it's your kind of thing.
Have a captivating and fascinating Wednesday, see you after 5.

One is that I don't think that multiple selections gives you an advantage. I haven't had a mensh this year at all. That isn't a complaint, I like the challange of trying to find songs to fit the theme. Mine tend to be a bit more album track orientated, and therefore not so likely to be chosen, I suspect, but therefore are also not likely to preclude offers of ideas from others.
The second reason, is that I think that the musical aspect of this blog is what sets it apart from other blogs, and helps to bind it. Deliberately severing most of the suggestions, I don't think would be benificial in this regard. I, for one, like to chase up songs that others have suggested on these pages, and give them a listen. Why deny that. A mensh is nice, but if that is all you want, then there are other methods of chasing one. Twitter, fb etc.
So, if next Wednesday you do decide to have a single suggestion each, count me out. I will continue along the same path I have for over a year. This isn't meant to be critical of anyone elses opinion, just another addition to the debate. Love you all.

That's a well thought out and balanced argument against having a One Hit Wednesday and has actually made me think about it a little differently.
I, too, think this blog works at its best when it's in free flow mode - unhindered by rules and contrivances.
A form of tacit self-regulation - after all, we are all adults here.
For example, if we are lucky enough to be mentioned one day, it would seem 'good manners' to hold back a bit for a day or so.
I, also, find the notion that if you suggest a song - you somehow 'own' it. Wha..?
Post mortem posts saying "you was robbed" or "someone else NOT from the blog got the mensh" only serve to underline such possessiveness.
Time to wind a few necks in?
Beginning with me, Perhaps.

#61 I totally agree with you KatyMaty. I'm just here for a bit of fun - it's lovely to hear my name (blog or real) on the radio, and it's a challenge trying to come up with something original that's still 'Radio 2' enough to get played, but it's really not the main reason why I'm here. Also, Simon frequently mentions more than one person who's suggested a particular song. Also, most of us (all of us?) are more than happy to share the credit. Also, I don't think it would work trying to limit each person to one song as not everybody would necessarily 'play'

I used to be a bit of a fan - he was something of a weird crush for a while, and I met him once. The only disappointing celebrity encounter I've had - went off him after that. Anyway, I saw him in concert a few times, and on one occasion he changed the words to 'Your a lady' as follows:
'It's the ladies
I'm a man
Don't know where you're
Supposed to stand...'

For what it's worth (not a great deal), I agree with everything written by Paul in Sheffield. I too like to see a wide and varied outpouring of ideas. Seeing what others have put may spark something in my head - something completely unrelated to the theme but I may not have heard it for a while - it's all good stuff.
I also have a small but manageable 'competitive' streak (or so my family tells me). So if I can only log in here mid-morning I like to have a scan through what has already been suggested and try to think of something different (I can't today, but there we go).
A further problem with the one-selection idea - who would police it? And how would someone posting for the first time on a Wednesday know about it? This place should be as welcoming and fluffy as possible (and it is). Odd 'rules' known only to some will not help in this regard (nor will impenetrable acronyms but that's my only little bug bear and I know that all I'd need to do is ask...)
Keep smiling through...

Thank you. I shall Google said song and listen to lyrics without offence. And my titls are Divine too - just ask Nic!
We just had a fire drill, or 10 minutes of organised chaos as its also known. 50 or so people stood in the car park looking cold and confused and 2 "fire wardens" who couldn't get drunk in a brewery, so to speak .....
Hey ho!

In my current state, I think I must be Miss Piggy. I really need to knock the pork scratchings habit on the head!
