Pinch punch etc

Simon Mayo|09:12 UK time, Friday, 1 October 2010

And a happy October to all bloggers wherever they be. A vile and stormy one chez Mayo. Yesterday recorded an interview with Ronnie Wood which you can hear next week. He's on top form and full of life. His new record has a bunch of his mates on and he's singing like a cross between Randy Newman and Bob Dylan.

Today is a 2 show Friday with rain being a factor. 5 Live has the Ryder Cup all weekend so the plan is Mark and I will be live streamed from 2 for an hour with the show being broadcast at 9 tonight. But if that rain keeps falling the golf might get postponed for a while, in which case we'll get put on for longer. Eminently flexible-that's us.

And then I'll get the ferry to Radio 2 for an All Request Friday-choose that song now!

Then I perform the role of quizmaster at a local church fundraiser which is fun and jolly unless you get the serious quizzers arriving. They forget that IT'S ALL FOR FUN and start getting shirty. I'll try and be Ken Bruce but it can get stressful you know. Child 3 will be the scorer-what can possibly go wrong?

Have a fine Friday!

    Morning Simon, team and Blogpoppets

A wet and blustery day here in Cambridgeshire. Doesn't bode well for the weekend.

Simon, can I ask you to please consider playing for the ARF opener:

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42.

    Thank you.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 3.

Oh, hi Alex - didn't see you there. You were indeed first. Has your kitty got an ARF suggestion today?

  • Comment number 4.

    Morning Simon, team and Blogpoppets

    Yes, Alex you're the first.

Wet and windy here today, but at least I got the car to the garage before the rain came.

    Back later

Good morning Simon, Team and fellow blog poppets!

Happy 1st October everyone! I see Paul has already done the pinch & punch on previous blog.

So, Simon did not take up my suggestion that he choose the song and we request it. I don't think it was really a go-er so I am not put out.

I have a new philosophy on ARF. If I am not going to be able to hear the first part of the show, I am not going to make a serious choice. On such occasions, I will be selected the full version of Led Zep's "Kashmir". However, today I am outta here at 3pm and off to the bolthole so I WILL hear the show! Hurrah!

Therefore, please play, for MTF on the 1 year anniversary of her first requesting this tune:

    TWILIGHT - ELO

    Thank you!

    Morning all.

Just spotted the new blog, as I was heading off out to pick up two ladies that need new teeth!!

So, a quick plea for my ARF.

I am a great believer, that patience is a virtue.

It is a year today, that I posted on CLPs blog for this particular song, and have been trying (yes I know!) ever since.

    Simon. Please could you play.....

    *** Twilight ***

    By ELO.

    Must dash, have fun everyone.

    Hi Deebee & Tortie

The kittens didn't notify me of their tune selection this morning so I had to go with my own! Then, listening to RM on breakfast, he managed to play every song I was thinking of suggesting (I thought Nik Kershaw would be a brill one on such a grey day but, obviously, so did Richard). Therefore, I had to go with MTF's choice as I couldn't think for myself today!!

    Morning all :-)

a dark, wet and windy start to the day here in the Shire too...

  • Comment number 10.

#8 You are welcome! Mind, I would feel dreadful if Simon played it and said that I had requested it after all your months of trying!!

  • Comment number 11.

Hi guys, my morning salutations are on the previous blog.

Simon, Fingets crossed the quiz goes smoothly. Child 3 will do a fab job and will shine like the little star I'm sure he is.

Alex-G - you are just sooooo lovely and considerate.

I'd be thrilled to little mint balls if you played MTF's suggestion but may I also put forward for consideration:-

Eye to Eye Contact, Edwin Starr

Btw, run with the big boys update - I bottled it at the last minute and regretted it instantly. However, one of the girls from the fast group who is just back from injury, Tuesday was her first night back, ran with me in the slower group and we had a fantastic and rather fast 4.5 miler. Will definitely give the big boys' group a go next week. I'd liken the step up to the very first time you venture into the deep end of the swiming pool.

Rightio, off to do some domestic engineering.

Thanks for the welcomes yesterday. Won't be posting often (work gets in the way you know), but seeing as the weather is so lovely at the moment, how about Get Off My Cloud by the Rolling Stones? Slightly tenuous link with Ronnie Wood, but hey, it's a decent tune...

Morning Simon, team and all you lovely blogpoppets,

Looks like October has roared in like a lion! Such a contrast to yesterday!

Thank you for playing my suggestion yesterday, Simon. I wont be putting in a request for ARF today, as I feel that you must read post #6 from our very own MTF. I can't think of any better way to start todays programme.

Good luck with the quiz, and enjoy the weekend one and all, whatever the weather.

Morning all, heard a lot of mentions for all the blog poppets on yesterdays show. Well done Simon and hopefully yesterday was the only day that the Ryder Cup (yawn) gets mentioned on Drivetime. Domestic engineering update for those who are interested (not many I know)... I've just had to quite literally domestic engineer! Vacuum cleaner wasn't working properly and upon further investigation involving a large dump of plasterboard dust, screws, etc all over the hall floor, I discovered an HB pencil lodged in one of the pipes! The fantastic heating engineers vacuumed when they finished last Saturday but evidently didn't notice they'd left their writing implement behind! Ah well, to quote The Bard, all's well that ends well.:) Just wanted to share.

    Okay I'm stopping now.

    Afternoon all

In the event of you not playing Twilight by ELO (you know you want to) how about You Really Got me by The Kinks?

Please think of me on Sunday at 12.15 when I am due to start the Clarendon Way half marathon. I have to say that if the weather carries on like this (and the forecast is just as foul for Sunday) I will gracefully retire. That would be a great shame though, as it is a beautiful cross-country route starting half way between Salisbury (Katy Mac's neck of the woods) and Winchester. Should be finished by 2.30-2.45, then a lovely friend has offered to cook Sunday lunch.

Have fun whatever you're doing this weekend xx

  • Comment number 31.

Good luck with the run Alison - at least the thought of a nice lunch at the end should keep you going!

We're going to London tomorrow; seeing a matinee of Sweet Charity and then somewhere nice for dinner - it's our 6th anniversary (not married, just together)

If you don't play Twighlight, Simon, could we please have

SEVEN SEAS OF RYE by Queen

We were channel hopping last night and caught part of a 1992 Queen concert, the first one without Freddie, I think, and I remembered how much I used to (and still do) like them!

  • Comment number 32.

Good luck with the run, Alison! Hope it doesn't rain, but if it does, it will at least spur you on to getting to the finish line in super fast time!

Have fun in London, Tortie and happy anniversary! I really want to see Sweet Charity as it is one of my favourite films. Let us know what you think of it.

By the way, Simon, have we mentioned that we would REALLY like you to play Twilight for our lovely Tooth Fairy?

Deevs (and Nic) - have fun at your ballroom dancing class. I'd love to learn to jive - it looks amazing when they do it on 'Strictly'. So fast though - don't know how they manage to keep up with the beat.

Feeling a bit fed up at the moment. I applied for some tickets for something I'd really have loved to have gone to, but as it's next Friday and I've heard nothing yet I'm guessing I haven't got them :(,

  • Comment number 42.

    Sounds lovely Andy!

Seems to be a weekend for dance!

  • Comment number 43.

I would like to start out by mentioning a birthday. I sometimes feel that it is a bit below the belt to bring a birthday into an ARF, but I am guilty of such a crime myself. Indeed this very action, mentioning a birthday, which resulted in my successfully getting a tweeted request for the ARF opener (It was Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy, on Phil Lynott's birthday, if you are keeping track). So, I have no qualms in trying the tactic again.

Simon, today, as I am sure you are aware, is the very first birthday of the very famous 'MTF Twilight request'. It is also one year to the day since The Guardian Online carried a story about babies being born on that same day, having a life expectancy of over 100 years.

Now, it seems to me that Simon Mayo (that is you, Sir) has displayed something of a reluctance to play ELO's Twilight, but if you wish to avoid this toddler of a request becoming a blight upon your good name, my advice would be to mark this anniversary with an outing for the said tune, or risk the request becoming an unruly teenager, running amok upon the blog.

It may be that you dislike the song, but I am sure that there are other, much worse ditties that you have given the oxygen of publicity to over your career. Be honest, what harm could it do. At worse, you may have to turn the studio sound down for a few minutes. But the obverse side of that coin would have a certain Mobile Tooth Fairy melting with love for you and your magnanimity. It would also offer a little protection to the keys G,H,I,L,T and W on that good lady's computer keyboard.

Simon, I beseech you, in the name of all that is good about All Request Friday, to finally do the decent thing, and grant the wishes of your most persistent bloggpoppet and play

'TWILIGHT', by THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA.

And dedicate it to the delightfully patient Mobile Tooth Fairy, who amongst all of the ARFers, is surely the most deserving.

  • Comment number 44.

#43 Wow Paul, that's more like "War & "Peace" than an ARF request! Beautifully put though : )

#79 Tortie. Feeling envious. Our nearest M&S is on the Mainland. Or as some on Anglesey say - the other island.

#87 Billy they've just opened one of their Simply Food outlets about 10 minutes away, the only problem being that it encourages the spending of money! : )

Out with a few girlfriends tonight for some Thai food so I'm off to feed the hungry hordes before I get myself all glammed up. I think I'll go for the glamorous bedraggled look so it won't matter if it's still chucking it down when I go out.

    Laters Pataters.

Will be tuned in at 5.05 with bated breath. Aarrgghh!! I'm soooo excited. I wonder who it will be??? I hope we're not disappointed.

Thanks KatyMac and GailyB - as I said we will all enjoy that Electric (twi)Lighty type song is Simon does as is requested! But may try that one again next week!

And GailyB I believe glamorous bedgraggled is the 'in' look....well it certainly is in most parts of the UK today!

Deebee - do you want us on this ere blog to do a similar MTF ARF thingy for you for 8th October and see if our Simon would do the dutiful thing to one of his faithful followers and get you the tickets...??

#94 Thanks for offering Dreamer, but that's okay. I wouldn't want to be shown any favouritism after all. I'm sure there'll be other opportunities (although they seem to be mostly in places like Newcastle!)

And thanks to Billy and Malcolm too. I'll just sit here in the corner and quietly sob....
