Friday duties

Simon Mayo|07:38 UK time, Friday, 3 September 2010

A sunny September Friday morning. The spiders are trying to spin us into their web prison but there's a school run to crank up again. I will manfully be first out of the house, flapping my arms. Every night I have spider-clearing duties to perform, called upstairs to remove "a really huge one". This turns out of course to be barely visible but the delicate use of a tissue usually suffices and the spider finds itself outside again. For about 5 minutes at least.

I'm back on a two show Friday model today. Two o'clock on 5Live for some movie reviews with Mark Kermode. We've been off for weeks so have a lot of movies to catch up with. He's at the Shetland Film Festival with Jason Isaacs and Julian Temple and me tying things together back at base. It would be great to be there but that all important "All request Friday" beckons.

I always think it's the greatest way to finish the week and rely on you to come up with some great tunes. That first one sets the standard don't you think? Your suggestions below along with all the other blog bon mots and banter.

Have a great Friday and see you at 5.05 as long as the spiders and assorted aracnophobic family members allow...

    Hiya gang!

Got back from the bolthole on Wednesday having had a lovely few days of country walks, hedgerow foraging and plum picking. A big weekend of jam making awaits! Haven't had a chance to catch up properly but did spot that Deebee's Mum is poorly - thinking of you Deebs and hope she is better soon. Also, do I gather that there will be quite a gathering at CiN in November? Yippee!!

Anyhoo, hope everyone is fine, dandy and in good fettle.

    Good Morning Blogpoppets.

Here is my bit of banter and bon mot, whatever that may be?

Right, my first bit goes like this.....

Dear Simon, please could you play ...

    *** Twilight ***

By ELO as my choice of ARF, I see no reason why you cant open the show two days running with a track from them.

I am now into my 12th month of requesting this particular track and am determined that one day, you will take note of my plea and put me out of my misery :)

Lets pop a confession on here too...

    Yesterday, I was tailgated by a .......

    Reliant Robin!!!

I couldn't shake him off even going around the corners, which he did quite well on two wheels and didn't end up doing a 'Clarkson!'

    Finally, 3 word friday.....

Although, I dont think we do 3 word fridays do we?

    Nevertheless....

    'Delivering Sparkly Smiles!'

    There!

  • Comment number 11.

MTF - that is too funny! Puffball must have been mortified!

    My 3 word Friday:

    "Builders Start Today"

  • Comment number 12.

    Hi Alex, Puffball was mortified!!

Sounds like you have been having a lovely time foraging, my favourite pastime. The hedges are full of free fodder at the moment aren't they.

Mushrooms here in abundance too. Luckily, I can spot the good from the bad. We had some giant puffballs (of the fungal variety) last year, bigger than rugby balls!

I keep plenty of tubs in the car at this time of the year, as you just dont know what you might come across.

Right, I'd best get to it.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 13.

#9 MTF I'm with you I keep requesting the same song and rather hope it works like the showstopper and eventually it will get picked so something else can go on the list!

  • Comment number 14.

Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon and The Team,

Just pooping by with my ARF opener - but only to be played in the event that you are unable, by law, to play ELO as an opener two nights on the trot. Fingets crossed that the lucky 9 does it for you MTF - X Loving your 3 word Friday, btw. :~)

As the weather has taken a turn for the better and this weekend is to be rather lovely, please may you play

    BOYS OF SUMMER, DON HENLEY

I haven't heard it all summer. I'm not shouting, merely making it easier for the 'choosers' to see what's on offer.

Well the elderGB has set off this morning for his first proper day of 6th Form - oh he looked so grown up in his uniform - t-shirt, checked shirt, skinny jeans and trainers, not forgetting that essential accessory, the messenger bag with a strong whiff of aftershave following him.

The youngerGB is off on his weekend trip with school - old clothes have been fished out of the back of cupboards and the roof space, the kagoul has been brought out of hiding and wiped down and, just for show, the toiletries are all ready to languish at the bottom of the bag untouched for a whole weekend. It all sounds so organised but don't be fooled as nothing has actually been packed yet. I really must get a 'wiggle'.

Not sure if I'll be back in with any banter or indeed a bon mot 'til after I've waved a fond farewell to the youngerGB.

The CiN thing sounds like a lot of fun - just disappointed I can't join in. :(

AG - nice to see you back - glad you had a lovely break - as I said previously it all sounds idyllic.

Alsion - does Spain know what to expect? It sounds like it could get rather messy. Good luck to the lads you're leaving behind - I'm sure they'll all have a ball. Have a fab time if I don't 'see' you before you go. X

Well, I hope you all have a lovely day and happy Friday one and all - will try to poop by later.

Hey PSL - I've just refreshed before logging out - good luck with your choice too, as long is it's one of the three of us (you, MTF or me), I'll be very happy. Fingets crossed my lovely as it's a good choice.

Hi Alex - welcome back! Glad you had a good break. My Mum's getting there, thanks for asking.

MTF - are you sure it wasn't Clarkson...? I feel Puffball's pain.

Alsion - your holiday sounds like great fun - hope you have a great time, and that the OHs cope while you're away. At the very least, it will make them appreciate you more.

KatyMac - thanks for tidying up in yesterdays blog.

#37 Sadly I can't listen/watch at work, unless my boss is out (which she isn't today) as we share an office. I will have to wait for the podcast, which I think is more or less the whole show, minus the news, travel etc. Is the live video stream working today? - I may have to take a sneaky look...

#38 Woohoo! Thank you so much for organising this, Deevs.

    Arfternoon Everyone,

Mmm, it's a bit quiet in here today. Just thought I'd poop by to catch up with the banter. Oooh just remembered, it's POETS day, isn't it.

Simon Ward - love your ARF suggestion - good luck - I love U2 and requested a couple of their early tunes on CLP's (Christopher Lambie Pie) Gobsmackers slot but no luck, as far as I'm aware. :(

Here's hoping the opener has been chosen from the blog today - they are all super suggestions today. Good luck you gorgeous blogpoppets.

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 44.

    Hi Tortie - welcome back!

You want to know what's been happening? Well, David Cameron's had a baby, the Stig's identity has been revealed and Sarah Kennedy's left Radio 2.

Oh, you meant on the blog...? Er, same old, same old. We missed you.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 45.

Hey Tortie, welcome back - missed you - hope you had a fabby time. I think Deebee has summed up the last couple of weeks rather succintly. Deebee - I didn't realise SK had actually left - I thought the report earlier said she would be leaving but didn't seem to give a date. Ooooh I wonder who'll fill that seat then?

I've pooped back in 'cos I've been lonered :( The elderGB has gone out with his mates and there's no Corrie on the tele :( Have looked out some filums to watch later - I think I might start with the Shawshank Redemption. I've never seen it but have heard v good reports.

    GailyB

  • Comment number 46.

Shawshank is brilliant. One of those "must see" films if you haven't already seen it.

  • Comment number 47.

#47. An item of news in this post has left me quite gleeful, which in turn gives me slight pangs of guilt. However, the gleefulness is winning. Whoop, whoop! No more having to retune the radio. Alex Lester, come on down!

  • Comment number 48.

Hey Key - thank you for the recommendation, it's what everyone has told me. I've had the dvd for a while now but just never seem to find the time to sit down and watch it. With the youngerGB away this weekend I plan on catching up on some films. I've borrowed The Green Mile from a friend and the elderGB has The Hurt Locker which I'd like to see too. Wishing you a very pleasant weekend. :)

    GailyB

  • Comment number 49.

I seem to have sufferred a slight slurring in my last post. I meant to say #45....

    Delicious irony, don't you think?

  • Comment number 50.

Agree with Ken, Shawshank definately a 'must see'

Hi Tortie, welcome back, whats been going on? the podcast will probably explain

BB - another succinct summing up of happenings the last couple of weeks. Wasn't Lissie just blimmin' marvellous?

    GailyB

  • Comment number 52.

And, whilst I am here, it has been pointed out to me that certain formerly prolific bloggers upon this site are conspicuous by their absence. In order to entice them back, I will try out the following theories.

    Spike, M.I.A.

I suspect the Spickster is deliberately keeping a low profile, as he doesn't quite trust himself to keep quiet where a certain X Factor contestant is concerned, and doesn't want to break any confidences.

Look away now, if you don't want to know the result...

Well, this information has been gleaned from a source that is in no way connected to this blog. It seems that our Geneva Lane gets three yeses, goes to boot camp, where it is suggested to her that she forms a girl band with other contestants, and they win through to the live shows, where they will be mentored by Cheryl. Am I close? You bet I am.

So, no need for Spike to stay away any longer.

As for Kev, well, perhaps he is homeless. Or more likely is having trouble getting Internet access. I know that he has tweeted occasionally, and would give him this message. Get your a*se back where it belongs, you pesky tree. You are needed for football based derision, if nothing else.

P.S. Further message for Spike. Can you get the Watch channel on cable or satellite. A new series of Australian Masterchef is starting there on Monday, I think it is. By FAR, the best Masterchef formulae anywhere, and must watch telly.

  • Comment number 53.

BB - didn't notice you got the 50 - woo hoo and yip yip with a yibble added in.

PoS - I think they'll find it hard to resist and will be beating a path back, even as we blog. Fingets crossed anyway.

    GailyB

  • Comment number 54.

Gaily, Lissie was great, I am normally doing bits and pieces whilst the show is on and enjoy listening at the same time, on that occasion I stopped and thought did she really do that and then watched the video after they put it on the web site

  • Comment number 55.

Loved Lissie. Cambridge Junction in a couple of months is very tempting.

  • Comment number 56.

Wasn't she marvellous? I was on the phone when she came on but I had Radio 2 on low in the background and thought that she sounded fab. I must check out the video.

Hi - just pooping back in while I wait for my Wittertainment podcast to download. We've been to a local beer festival this evening - good craic and a sampling of some quite nice ciders (I don't drink beer). And even better, Mr Bee wanted to take the sports car, which meant I was let off being the driver.

BB - congrats on the 50, and LOL at your description of neighbour disputes. And yes, it was a good picture - I have cut and pasted and, er, cut... *ahem*

Paul (and Spike if you're lurking) - just started following Geneva Lane on Twitter, so looking forward to updates.

Hello lovely blogpoppets! I hope everyone's having a weasent pleekend. It was sunny here earlier, but it's clouded over a bit now.

An update on my Mum: it looks like she won't be coming out of hospital till Monday now. The *bleep bleep* occupational therapy people haven't delivered the equipment she'll need at home yet. I guess it's not a bad thing her staying in hospital a bit longer - it sounds like she's being well treated. It's a bit frustrating though. I'm all packed and ready to leave.

Thanks for the 50 hat Katy, worn with pride.

Deebee, hope your mum is back home soon, I know hospital at weekends can be very frustrating, my dad was in last year, every time it looked like he would come home the weekend arrived and nothing could happen till Monday.

Good luck Paul, hope the revamped emporium does you proud

  • Comment number 72.

    Hi Everyone,

Just taking the time to poop by before I start cracking on with tea.

#41 - Firstly, my apologoes, GD, I thought I had welcomed you in but when I scrolled back, I see I didn't. Anyhoo, warmest welcome and fingets (please see the blogpoppets' dictionary) crossed you can hang around to enjoy the banter.

PoS - good luck with the new venture my lovely. Next time I'm at Meadowhall, I may just poop by to see you in your wonderful new and improved shop.

Deebee - my Mum reckons she still worries about me which is so sweet, bless her - her memory is failing her and her eyesight is so bad she doesn't recognise me 'til I'm nearly at her front door. I'm with you MTF, it's not really time for peeps to worry about us, we should just count our blessings and be happy that we're in a position to be the worriers (or should that be carers).

I've had a bit of a film fest of a weekend - I actually managed to watch the three films I set out to watch without falling asleep. Woo hoo!!! I started with The Shawshank Redemption - which was amazing - followed by The Green Mile - which I found a little harrowing but still a fantastic film - and I finished off with The Hurt Locker today - again a fantastic film.

Rightio you gorgeous blogpoppets, I'm off to make tea - hope to 'see' you all bright eyed and bushy tailed tomorrow.

Enjoy what's left of the weekend.

    GailyB

  • Comment number 77.

    Hi All

I hope everyone's had a great weekend. This afternoon was spent tackling a huge pile of ironing while simultaneously watching 2 episodes of Casualty. I love Casualty, but the storylines can get to you a bit sometimes. Mr Bee, on the other hand, can't stand it. Usually I record it when it goes out on a Saturday then watch it during the week while he's away. But he's been working from home for the past few weeks, which is why I've got a bit behind. Felt a bit drained at the end of it - I won't say what happened in case there's anyone else out there still catching up. But it wasn't the most cheerful of plots.

Paul - I love markets, continental and otherwise. We always try to go to one wherever we go on holiday. The market we went to in Turkey was amazing - lots of colourful spices on display, and vegetables too. Some I'd never even heard of. And they don't seem to worry as much about everything being the same shape and size, like they do in supermarkets. Plus I managed to get a 'prada' handbag for £15.

MTF and Gaily - you are both absolutely right. We should be grateful that we don't need people to be worried about us. Although my mum does worry about me, I know. She worried about Mr Bee when he did his Atlantic sailing trip last year too. I think I was just feeling a bit tired and emotional when I wrote that - look at the time it was posted...

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 78.

Aw bless you Deebee, of course you were tired. You've had a stressful time lately. Here's hoping your Mum is back home again and all settled in soonly. Take care and have a huge hug and a kiss from me, {{{HUGS}}} XXX

  • Comment number 79.

Bless you too Gaily - you are so sweet! Fingets crossed, she should be home tomorrow. I always knew September was going to be a tough month - still got Child 1's departure for University to cope with in a couple of weeks. I'll do my best to keep positive though - just got to think forwards. In particular to November, when one or two quite exciting things should be happening...

OMG, I can't believe I haven't been here for soooo long - I haven't had a day off since August 15th, but am loving my work at the moment - really satisfying transformation of beautiful buildings to their former glory. Miss you all (honest!) and I do think of you all daily (dabs hanky to eye - must be the dust), but for now I'm limited to the odd visitation to the most splednid of Blessbloggs.

Now, is CDF(etc) back? If not, can I nick his trademark..."What have I missed?" x ;-)
