Just the weather for salad

Simon Mayo|07:28 UK time, Thursday, 26 August 2010

Well Autumn is well and truly here and it feels like a weekend of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Which is fine apart from the obligation to spend most of it in a tent. I used to love camping-all our family holidays were caravaning ones-but find that middle-age brings with it the desire for a decent bed. And curtains. Oh and warmth. Still compulsory family time, you know how it goes.

And you might be in the mood for a hearty stew but Nigel is promising a salad made with stale bread. I told him last week that it didn't get the pulse racing exactly but an Italian Panzanella salad is what it is. So let's all join in with the enthusiasm that we would greet a golden syrup sponge and custard with. 'Yes Nigel, nice basil leaves. Super tomatoes. Stunning balsamic vinegar. Pass the treacle.'

And oldies I hear you ask? Well this weekend sees Newqay hosting the British Surf Championships on Fistral Beach. What a place to be this weekend! There'll be a limit to the number of Beach Boys tunes available so lets think waves, boards and wetsuits.

And let's go surfing from 5.05...

    Are we fixed?

Happy birthday Nic! Have a great day.

Well done to Gaily, Alison and Alex-H for the menshes. It was a great show yesterday.

Well done also to Mr MCW for the day skipper. I know how hard the course is as a couple of friends have done it.

I was going to suggest Wipe Out by the Surfaris but see it is in the extensive list provided at #19 so won't.

Catch you all later. Have a good day one and all!

    Alex-G

Not fixed. Some sort of virus, me-thinks.

Alex H - you definitely deserve the HOIB!!!!

Don't think that list contains the beautiful songs Surf or Here Comes the Ocean by Roddie Frame (he's not played enough on the radio these days in IMHO)

or Ocean Drive by The Lighthouse Family

or Big Sur by The Thrills (not a typo - it's about the place not a f-less surf!)

Kids left for Reading Festival at 6.30 this morning ... bit frantic when they discovered at 8pm last night that the tent had been lent out and not returned ... lovely friend saved the day (well 4 days) with loan ... house to ourselves ... yippee

    Happy Birthday Nicrolastic!

How about the theme from the film 'From here to eternity'. There's that famous scene with Burt Lancaster and the girl body surfing on the beach. That is what they were doing, isn't it? ;o)

Or ITSY BITSY TEENY WEENY YELLOW POLKA DOT BIKINI by Brian Hyland. Think I might have trumped Alex H for the HOIB.

Better get on with some work then...

Morning Everyone and, of course, Simon and The Team,

Firstly, THANK YOU for my mensh last night, Simon - ashamed to say I didn't hear it - yesterday afternoon turned pear-shaped (elder GB's orthodontic appointment was 3.40 not 4.20 as I thought - he was seen at 4.50 - marvellous orthodontist) so I missed most of the show. I did hear Alex Heney's mensh tho' so congrats Alex. I will listen again.

As I had a mensh last night, the 2nd in as many weeks, I'm not going to suggest anything today. (that's just a cover for my usual thing of not being able to think of anything suitable to suggest).

Warmest Welcomes to you Anna and Phillipa Chapman - I hope you hang around to enjoy the banter.

Deevs - great to 'see' you - shame about being in the open plan office - I'm in an open plan office but my desk is right at the back in the furthest away corner :) Glad you enjoyed 'V'.

The Fantastic Rolastic - happy birthday - I hope you have a wonderful day.

Congrats Mr MCW on his exam result. How's your head this morning MCW? All clear?

Katy Mac - you cheesy rock chick - I'm loving the cheesy choice.

Alex-G - I hope the PM is going well.

BB - good choices - I hope you get a mensh for the Stranglers.

Deebee - where are you my lovely - is it busy in HR today?

Has anyone seen Mark Cannon lately - haven't heard from him for what seems like ages. Mark, are you lurking? Poop by if you can

Alsion of Eastleigh - is that another candidate for the Blog Dictionary?

Rightio, off to look busy - the grindstone has ground to a halt today :(

#30 Hi Gaily. I think Mark Cannon said a while ago that his current job meant he couldn't post during the day any more. Frustrating isn't it, when work gets in the way of the all-important job of blogging.

Dentistry does seem to be a theme today. Simon tweeted earlier that he was going to the hygenist (poor lamb - I HATE that), Gaily's GB had an appointment with the orthodontist yesterday, and my own GB has a check-up this afternoon. It's the first time he's been on his own so I'm a bit nervous, but as he's off to Uni next month it's about time he started doing stuff like that without Mum. I guess...

Another song suggestion: TO THE SEA by Jack Johnson. I'm not sure if it's a single though.

  • Comment number 43.

California Girls by David Lee Roth please Simon.

I remember him riding on a giant surfboard on wheels from boxing ring (which he abseiled into for the opening) to the stage at Wembley Barnatorium on a solo tour while singing the song.

Of course, many beers have been consumed since then so time may have dulled the memory.

'Yes, I have this year to deliver, but I don't have an accurate address.'

'What do I want a year for?'

'Oh, it's not for you, I was hoping someone here would be kind enough to pass it on to Nic, to add to his growing collection of years'

' OK, then leave it on the doorstep, and either someone here will pass it on to him, or the neighbours might spot it and hand it on. Although I'm not sure he will really want ANOTHER year.'

Deebee - I knew there was something I wanted to say - I hope your GB gets on well at the dentist today - I'm sure he'll manage just fine - you're probably more nervous than he is. The elder GB has a fantastic orthodontist - he was so lovely yesterday when I got the time completely wrong - should have been there at 3.40 but I thought the appointment was 4.20 doh! From what the receptionist said, he hadn't even stopped for lunch yesterday. I was really grateful that he saw EGB.

Well you guys, I'm outta here 'til Tuesday - woo hoo.

A weekend of tidying and pottering before the return to the old routine. I'm hoping for a day out on Saturday with the GBs but will see how the weather is doing before any final decisions are made. The elder GB is going ski-ing on Monday with a mate so he's super hyper about that. The younger GB and I will find something equally exciting to occupy ourselves with, I hope. If not, it'll be an afternoon on the sofa with a supply of dvds and goodies.

Have a fab and groovy weekend you gorgeous blogpoppets and 'see' you next week.

    Afternoon,

Thanks for the birthday wishes (Paul - original!) and the cake (I thought it was me skiing when I first saw it - it's my age you know!) Deevs claims she is treating me to a trip to the pub tonight...

Not big on Beach Boys tbh - I don't have anything in common with blond American surfers, so not my bag. You could, however, play something by the magnificent Cherry Ghost's new CD, Beneath This Burning Shoreline. Saw them at V - fab - also seeing them on Oct 2nd, apparently (part of birthday treat!)

Good day all, apologies for the sporadic postings (I do have notes!), work has been getting in the way recently!

Didn't catch the show last night I'm sorry to say, but a quick scan of the above tells me congratulations are in order, so well done on the menshes!

And that cake looks lovely Katy. A piece of that would slip down nicely after my lunchtime pasty! Happy birthday Nic.

Having missed the boat on all the surfin' tunes, here's a few for the boogie boarders out there ...

BOOGIE WONDERLAND - EARTH WIND AND FIRE

BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE - THE JACKSONS

YES SIR I CAN BOOGIE - BACCARA

    BOOGIE PILGRIM - ELTON JOHN

    Lunch time beckons ... later

Am finishing up my work ready to be out of here on the dot of 5. Dinner with friends then bolt hole tomorrow until Wednesday. Hurrah! Pet nanny coming into look after cats (yes, really - a bit like a Clever Super Nanny but for kitties) and I am sure they will enjoy a break from us too!

So, lovely weekend to you all and thank you for your company this week!

    Alex-G

PS May have to pop in to post an ARF - got a cracking one for this week!
