An easy start

Simon Mayo|07:02 UK time, Friday, 16 July 2010

Before 8, child 1&2 to be equipped with camping gear (who put the tent away wet?) sleeping roll (you expect me to sleep on that?) and exhortations about eating healthily (at a festival? Are you mad?). Then the taxi service trundles back into service. Wearily feel it's time for a relaxing day but no sir! The caffeine will kick in shortly and all will be well in

spite of running out of peanut butter.

A double show day with movies at 5Live but at 2pm because of the golf and then a gentle amble over the Westway that connects Television Centre and Radio 2. That's not it's purpose, it just does it. The All Request Friday looms with it's mix of hen nights, stag do's, weddings, school shows and coffee mornings. Choose that opening song now! You know what you like...

Do we have another theme to pick for ARF ?

    Billy Idol - White Wedding

  • Comment number 3.

I do indeed know what I like Simon.

Its just that its taking you a long time to getting around to playing it for me!

Ooops thats lots of ing words!!

Ah well here goes for nothing.....

Simon for my ARF, would you very kindly play, what I consider to be a belter of a song, that doesn't get played enough on the radio despite being in the BBC library somewhere, as it was played on another presenters show a while back AND I missed it, doh, oh yes......

    'Twilight' by ELO, who else!!

I may pop back with a reserve, as a new tactic.

    Cheery pip.

  • Comment number 4.

    Morning All,

As we will be hearing of people travelling here, there and everywhere my suggestion for appropriate ARF

'In A Big Country' by Big Country,

Its also a good up beat song as well.

Hope its a good day for one and all

  • Comment number 5.

I always ask for 'The sweetest feeling' Jackie Wilson and never get it played :-( so will ask for 'never be lonely' The Feeling who I'm going to see on Sunday :-)

  • Comment number 6.

My reserve record to get the show off to a nice, loud, lively start is...

    Since you've been gone.... Rainbow.

    Thank you.

    Quiet round here, innit?

  • Comment number 9.

    Morning All

#6 MTF, wouldn't it be ironic if your reserve song got played the first time of asking!

    My ARF opener please:

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42

#6 Wow MTF - great minds! 10 minutes before you posted this, i tweeted the same thing, so to reiterate, i will go for...

SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE by RAINBOW

    Cheers,

    Kev

  • Comment number 12.

As you have highlighted yours in BLOCK CAPITALS Kev, I expect if it is picked that you will get the mensh. LOL!

Suns out here now and its very HOT.

Off to tidy up some of the storm damge from last night.

Can we have "Ramble On" by Led Zep for the ARF opener please Simon.

  • Comment number 14.

Ooops, Hi Deebee, yes ironic indeed.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 15.

Next week I'm going to select a song with some mando-guitar in it and use the Kev-patented Policy of Persistence until it gets played :-).

  • Comment number 16.

#12 Well if I do, MTF, it will be a joint victory for both of us! :-)

  • Comment number 17.

#15 just as long as you adhere to the copyright laws, Ken!

  • Comment number 18.

Persistence isn't all its cracked up to be Ken.

  • Comment number 19.

Graham Bonnett Rainbow wasn't really Rainbow at their best was it? Would love to have seen them with Ronnie James Dio, and Cozy Powell with full twin bass-drum kit on the go.

Saw Cozy in Peter Green's band at the Shepherd's Bush Empire and it was "small kit, do it in your sleep" stuff in comparison. Never got to see him in full flight :-(.

  • Comment number 20.

#19 - I kinow exactly what you mean, Ken. I missed them playing Nottingham by a cruel twist of fate - they played in 1978 as part of the "Long Live ROack and Roll" tour, with the said Ronnie james and Cozy tour de force. I was 14 and got a ticket for my birthday to go with my mate. However, I was crippled with a jippy tummy on the day they played and just couldn;t make it our of bed, let alone to the gig. It was a good few years later when I did manage to see them live, but by that time they had the Skegness Screamer as vocalist. At least it wasn't Joe Lynn Turner!

  • Comment number 21.

Good ARFternoon to Simon & Team [errant apostrophe in your blog today notwithstanding - can you spot it?]..

and to fellow Blogpoppets indeedio - hope we're feeling collectively speldnid.

    I have tweeted:

TRAVELING WILBURYS - HANDLE WITH CARE

as my request - for all the travellers [spelled the English Way] out there.

    Pedant, moi?

    :^)

  • Comment number 22.

Just thought of another ARF: I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL by Joan Jett.

Has everyone taken the day off?!

  • Comment number 23.

    #21 Hi Katy

Yes, I did spot the errant apostrophe, maybe it's due to lack of peanut butter!

  • Comment number 24.

    Hi gang

Just a quickie for now, and will be back later to regail you all with what an idiot I made of myself at the hospital this morning in the dental department.

For ARF, I would love to hear

LOVE ON YOUR SIDE - THOMPSON TWINS

  • Comment number 26.

    Helloooo!

It is far too hot at 38 degrees so I have sought sanctuary in the hotel lobby and thought I'd pop in!

Deevs- sounds like you have had an eventful time. Hope you are ok now. Coincidentally, last Monday I managed to break my new filling and tooth on a piece of very hard toast and so found my way to the nearest dentist here. Talk about hi-tec! Our dentists in the UK are really in the stone age. I was in the chair for nearly an hour and didn't feel a thing- had to have 2 injections of anaesthetic (not easy to spell after a glass of mythos- other beers are available!!) and am now back to full gnasher capabilities!! It helped that the dentist was young, good looking and spoke excellent English! Only prob is, I may have to go back to my dentist for a crown eventually!! Am very tempted to come back here for that!

Deebee, thanks for the weather update in the UK, was worried that our garden and lawn that we left brown an parched would be a desert on our return. Off for the boat part of the holiday tomorrow, husband very excited- wish I could say the same!!!

Kev- sounds as if your house move is all coming together now, you will be pleased when you eventually get in your house once the work has been done. It will be worth it.

MTF lots of fabulous wildlife here, snakes, lizards and very tame swallows! And beautiful wild finches.

Simon, enjoy the camping! Hope the sun shines for you!

How about GO WILD IN THE COUNTRY by BOW WOW WOW as an opener- although I

wont be able to hear it!

Take care now and have a brilliant weekend all,

    Mcw xxxxx

  • Comment number 27.

Just spotted your post Katie from yesterday- yes there is plenty of Robola and Linos, and am getting qite partial to the Mythos- dont normally drink beer. Big hugs back to you!!!! Bet you can't wait for your holibobs- it is still lovely here, nothing changes!

Good ARFternoon Each! And for my request today.

'Into The Valley' by The Skids, please Simon.(Mondegreen City!)

  • Comment number 30.

It IS quiet today - much quieter than yesterday.

    What's different? Oh yes - Spike's not here ;o)

  • Comment number 31.

#30 There's no GailyB either Deebee.

At least The Floorboards haven't started creaking yet!

  • Comment number 32.

I'm on my own in the office again this afternoon (and on the blog too, by the look of it) so listening to Wittertainment on 5 Live. No video stream this week, sadly.

  • Comment number 33.

#31 Ooh - hello Tortie, didn't see you sneak in!

I've been in and out of here today.

  • Comment number 36.

    #30 oh yes he IS!!!

SWITCHBOARD SUSAN please Simon - ROCKPILE (it's just a tad smutty, that's all - eminently broadcastablacious)

  • Comment number 37.

Spikey - I'm switchboard deevs this arvo!

    x

  • Comment number 38.

#36 Well at least as long as you keep requesting it, the rest of us get more of a chance.

  • Comment number 39.

RIght, apologies for copying this from CLP's gaff next door, but I CBA to re-type it. So, if you are sitting comfortably, this morning went something like this ....

I basically made a complete and utter eejit of myself at the hospital this morning. Got there, waited a bit, x-ray taken, then called in to see the consultant - he asked me to get in "the chair" and I just burst into tears as I'd been told there would be no examination, just a chat about my options. Long story short - the hospital only do extractions, not root canals. I argued that I wanted whatever it was needed doing under sedation due to my phobia, he said he would refer me back to my dentist to have it done in the surgery (who don't do sedation). I said I felt like a tennis ball and that it felt that nobody in the NHS cared for patient feelings or emotions, then after another bout of hysteria and more tears I agreed to just be put on the waiting list to have it extracted in approx 6-8 weeks time.

As a result of this morning, I now feel like absolute poo, very tearful and can't wait for 5pm. Off to ELH then home to my lovely FantasticRolastic, and some vin rouge and one of his amazing curries (provided I remember to buy everything needed for the same in ELH).

    Piffle!

    Deevs

    x

  • Comment number 40.

Deevs, that sounds terrible! I can't stand going to the dentist either (although mine is quite nice - he looks a bit like Dr Greene out of ER). Can't you go for an extraction at the hospital? I'm sure you can have that done under a general anaesthetic, and you wouldn't know anything about it. Alternatively, have you thought about hypnosis? I've never had it done myself, and I think I'm probably one of those people who can't be hypnotised, but I know one or two people who've done it, and they swear by it.

  • Comment number 41.

#40 sorry, just re-read your post - I missed the bit about you being put on the waiting list to have it extracted. D'oh! X

  • Comment number 42.

Afternoon Everyone, I've been out for coffee with my chums this morning and upon my return, I attacked the housework after having a rather scrummy fish finger and mayo sanger for lunch. Mmmmm yum!

The younger GB and I are taking part in a charideeee bike ride tomorrow morning - 15 miles from his school along a disused and now appropriately refurbed rail track - really looking forward to it. One of the Mums at school has arranged the bike ride; her 3 year old niece is currently going through treatment for a rather nasty type of brain tumour - I know they're all nasty but this one seems to have been particularly aggressive. They're raising money for 3 cancer charities. We'll be back to school in time for the fete and then the GBs and I are off to the running club bbq - looking forward to having a lie in on Sunday.

My ARF Opener would have to be BICYCLE RACE - QUEEN, please. Thank you muchly.

Chickster - I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of your holiday on the boat - your enjoyment of it may be with hindsight tho'.

Tortie, I haven't heard the Floorboards creak for a while - bit of a puzzle isn't it?

SM & TMU - hope the weather calms down and stays dry for your camping trip. Will there be somewhere for you to plug in the straighteners, etc?

MC - I don't think I congratulated you on your mensh yesterday - despite it being a popular request you were the only one to have the mensh - well done.

MTF - good luck my lovely - we'll all breathe a sigh of relief the day that choon is played.

Good luck everyone with your suggestions - will be listening intently (but not within tent) to see who's been successful.

TC - I've got to go in search of the errant apostrophe now - I didn't notice it earlier, tsk, tsk :(

    Gaily

  • Comment number 43.

Right I'm off home, then to promenade the pooch and providing we don't get blown off the hill (yes, we have a hill. In East Anglia) back by five-oh-five.

Good luck everybody, and a special good luck to Spike as I think he needs a whole lot more of the stuff than the rest of us if he's ever going to get that song played!

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 44.

#42 Oh, and hello and goodbye to GailyB - didn't see you sneaking in there!

  • Comment number 45.

Aw Deevs, you've had a rotten time. Fingets crossed you get it all sorted out soonly and as painlessly as possible. Would you feel calmer if the Fantastic Rolastic was with you when you go for the treatment?

Mr Rolastic - it goes without saying but I'm going to say it anyhoo, lots of TLC along with the curry tonight, I think.

    Gaily

  • Comment number 46.

Toodle-oo Deevs - may 'see' you later for a catch up on t'other side. I've had probs getting into my messages on FB this afty so still haven't replied. Enjoy your walk, can't you fill your pockets with some heavy weights to stop you from being blown off the hill?

    Gaily

  • Comment number 47.

Thanks gang. I have to say, FantasticRolastic always gives me ooodles of TLC - he is absolutely wonderful.

    x

  • Comment number 48.

Deevs - that sounds horrendous! I fully sympathise, I hate going to the dentist and get quite panicky about having a check-up.

At least you've got Mr Rolastic to provide some TLC (and some good food)!

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 49.

Oh dear Deevs - sounds as though the phobia has a real grip on you. I have a friend - intelligent, successful, largely pragmatic about the world we live in, able to make considered judgements, etc etc. and yet ... any rationality totally deserted her when faced with the dentist. As a last resort she tried hypnotherapy. Sorted. Completely.

    Good luck x

  • Comment number 50.

Not wanting to be picky, but I found 3 errant apostrophes.

  • Comment number 53.

#52 I've just had another look - you're completely right Gaily! I guess that means that our ARF choices won't be picked tonight! :)

  • Comment number 54.

Hmmm - I got the ARF opener. Seems like today is my day.

  • Comment number 55.

#56 Actually, I think I sounded more excited than you!

  • Comment number 58.

Well done KM, great choice, was driving back down the A3 and gave a big cheer for you

  • Comment number 59.

#53 - Tortie - you're right - obviously we were just too picky. :( My bike ride for charideee didn't even warrant a mensh. :((

Katy - woo hoo and well done. I didn't hear your mensh as my friend called round and I turned the radio down a bit lower, didn't think SM would want to be part of our girlie chat. We'd just settled down with a brew when I heard the start of the show. I almost blurted out 'I just want to hear who got the ARF opener', but didn't think she'd appreciate that SO I'm listening again. Good choice too.

Well have I lucked in or what? The elder GB has been using my bike to do his paper round and it's showing the signs of wear and tear, as it was just a cheap one from a well known toy store so I asked a friend if I could borrow her bike which I have been to pick up tonight. Did you hear me celebrating when I realised it has a GEL SEAT???!!! It'll be like cycling on an armchair. Now I'm really looking forward to this bike ride tomorrow. I'm having a cheeky wee G & T to celebrate. Mmmm yum.

Wishing Everyone a very lovely, happy, warm, sunny and dry weekend.

  • Comment number 60.

KatyMac, what a star! Good song choice, too.

Welcome to the club of successful ARFers. That's those of us who feel slightly guilty about continuing to ask for Friday openers, seeing as we have been successful already, but carry on trying anyway.

  • Comment number 61.

I used to have to be sedated to even sit in the chair.

So, why the heck I chose a job that involves me going to the dentist about 12 times a day is beyond me!

BUT, I must admit, it has helped.

I have seen, how different practices work and there is help out there.

If anyone lives in my region. Please get in touch.

All of the dentists that I visit, offer sympathetic help, ranging from sedation, to hypnotherapy and beyond.

My advice... If you can get it done tomorrow, go for it.
