Toot toot, wiggle wiggle etc

Simon Mayo|09:12 UK time, Monday, 14 June 2010

Hello to all Drivetimers! Hope your weekend was everything you wanted on Friday. I attended a lovely wedding in Devon, notable for having lovely weather a beautiful couple and no TV. Who would have thought it? We all survived somehow and probably emerged into Sunday more chilled and less stressed than everyone else. Maybe I'm onto something here...

So today's show features "The Wiggles". Now that might mean nothing to you but if you have kids aged 3-8 or have had kids that age in the last 10 years you may well know about this bunch of ex-teachers from Australia. They were for 5 years the biggest entertainment earners down under only recently pipped by AC/DC. They do kid's songs and shows that to us had the huge advantage of not being "Barney the Dinosaur". Anyway they are in the UK for shows so they make their Drivetime debut today. The Toot Toot reference above is a line from one of their songs by the way. In case you thought I'd lost it.

And for those lovely oldies, well how about songs to mark the glories of High Definition TV? What a great idea that new tv must have seemed when you had it delivered. You know what to do and where to do it I feel.

Good Morning Each! Can I start off by saying thank you to Simon for removing the need for us to only find radio friendly songs, this is so liberating. (Chuckle)

Actually, I do not think any of these are ...erm...rude, shall we say.

HIGH DEFINITION TV - 3 COLOURS RED

  • Comment number 6.

Now, I may have missed a trick, here, but I guessed that todays subject was probably inspired by the ITV hd channels failure to show Englands goal on Saturday, and cut away to an ad instead. If I'm wrong, then my song choices (above) are not as inspired as I had hoped.

  • Comment number 7.

    OK - another idea ...

    Morning All

Well that's cleared something up. I had no idea who or what the Wiggles were. Although I guessed from Simon's tweets yesterday that they were Australian.

Anyway, here's some I tweeted earlier:

"I can see clearly now" by Johnny Nash (although Darren's suggestion of the Jimmy Cliff version would be equally acceptable)

    "True Colours" by Cyndi Lauper

    Deebee X

PS It's kids' songs, Simon. Not kid's songs. Tut, tut...

Or YOUR SO VAIN by CARLY SIMON

CLOSER THAN MOST by THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH

Morning all! Hope everybody had a good weekend. I travelled up to London (was a 3 day horse ride in my day...) to see a certain Lord Wogan of Larn do what he (sometimes) gets piad for. Also watched part of Le Mans - poor Nigel Mansell.

    Morning all

In honour of ITV, which is a national disgrace of Wembley proportions,.........

"Same Old Song And Dance" Aerosmith

"The Song Remains the Same" Led Zep

Is there a "Resignation Song" by anyone? If not there should be!

    In respect of the investigation:

    "Sweet Little Mystery" John Martyn

And for HD TV generally (golf looks blooming marvellous on it, especially when Brits are winning on the Yanks' home soil):

    "Pictures of You" The Cure

ITV are a shambles, but the Beeb need to be careful not to make too much fun at ITV's expense though. The Beeb after all still only has one experimental HD channel (how long do they need to complete the experiment?) and managed to end their transmission of HD coverage of the PGA at Wentworth on the Saturday with players still on the course. And have been telling HD viewers all last week to return to SD pictures on the red button mid-match at Queens so that they can show kids' shows in HD. You really couldn't make it up.

  • Comment number 26.

#11 - Liking the cut of your chapeau of pedantry there, Deebee, and an inspired song choice, to boot!

  • Comment number 27.

Why don't you swith off your television set go out and do something less boring instead?

  • Comment number 28.

#27 - memories of kids' TV in the school holidays again. What a great show was Why Don't You, and scarily, CDF, you almost got the lyrics to the theme tune perfectly correct!

  • Comment number 29.

Btw, I've just won tickets to see Bon Jovi at the O2 Arena next week.

Can the blogpoppets help me out about this predicament by letting me know their thoughts in regards:

    1) Should I be excited about this?

    2) What sort of audience will be attending?

    3) What is the perfect book to read at a Bon Jovi concert while the wife is dribbling over Mr Jovi?

    Your views are much appreciated.

#28 Here is something for you to remember next time you are playing Trivial Pursuits, previous 'young presenters' of the show included Ben Slade, Gideon Coe, Alexandra Fletcher, Anthony McPartlin, Pauline Quirke, Osama bin Laden, Andy Crane and Scott McGill.

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you)

SOUND & VISION by DAVID BOWIE

  • Comment number 32.

#28 Thanks Kev - let's hope the main man agrees

#29 I'm not a Bon Jovi fan myself - never seen the attraction. But I imagine the majority of the audience will be people who've followed him since he's been successful. There are unlikely to be any youngsters in the audience. Of course I could be wrong. As regards reading matter, anything will do, although probably not a newspaper - bit obvious!

  • Comment number 33.

Thanks DB, I suppose I should just keep the faith that it will be alright on the night. You never know, they might go down in a blaze of glory!

    ONE VISION by QUEEN

  • Comment number 34.

    #29 Nice one Darren

Did you 'win' the journey into England and back including overnight accommodation plus all the trimmings as well?

Also, you may not need a book - just a decent mobile device - there's plenty to see at the O2 if you wish to avoid dribbling JBJ fans

  • Comment number 35.

#1 I had to go and look up what the word was - I didn't even realise there was a profanity in the song :-).

In these days of hard-disk based playout systems I would have assumed that only radio-friendly versions of the songs would be on the system. I'm actually quite pleased that's not the case - I don't want my radio completely sanitised and would prefer the artist's original intention to be honoured if it's not too extreme.

I wonder if "Pigeons" by Genesis, containing the same word in relation to pigeon excrement, would be playable on daytime radio?

On today's theme and from the same EP:

"Match of the Day" by Genesis please Simon, my preferred choice for HD pictures of World Cup matches in the absence of Andy Gray and chums.

  • Comment number 36.

#35 I'm with you Ken. I still await with baited breath the original version of "Don't marry Her, Have Me" by The Beautiful South to be played on the radio...

  • Comment number 37.

    Kev

If that did happen I think the next sound you heard would be the P45 hitting the desk of the poor DJ and producer who let it happen. :)

  • Comment number 38.

#36 similarly, wonder if anyone has been "brave" enough to play the Stranglers' "Bring On The Nubiles"?!

  • Comment number 39.

This blog seems to have taken on a decidedly un-Wiggles-like tone. Today of all days. Tut!

  • Comment number 40.

    Darren,

Re your ticket(s) win - you could give it to any number of air-headed females with virtually zero taste in baig-hair orientated "rock" music...

And don't even start me on itv's blunder - I was trying hard enough not to shout and swear at the tv on saturday as my 7-year old was in the room and that and Mr Green didn't help - I think "muppet" was as strong as I managed!

Song choice - The Primitives - Crash.

    Nic

  • Comment number 41.

Oh and Simon, say hello to Dorothy the Dinosaur for me....

  • Comment number 42.

#36 I requested that once - I was almost relieved when it didn't get played...

  • Comment number 43.

Just Googled the Wiggles. Interesting stuff. Apparently, they use the theories of early child development in their songs and shows. Thankfully, Freud doesn't appear to feature...

  • Comment number 44.

CneDF. Can I draw your attention to #24. Perhaps you'd like to gently mock Malcolm with regards to windows, for a day or two? ;0)

  • Comment number 45.

#44. Malcolm, please don't take this as a slight against you. Darren teased me for a good while about windows. All good natured stuff, but no-one other than Darren knew what he was on about. Funny, though.

    I think.

Hope you are OK, and it wasn't a high fall.

  • Comment number 46.

#44 ahem - it wasn't my fault... Well, it might slightly have been my fault... Alright! I didn't see it was closed.

  • Comment number 47.

Actually the defenestration itself was unsuccessful at the first attempt (see #46). It did prove, however, that the window cleaners are doing a good job and thoroughly deserve their tips.

#45 I don't mind a bit of good-natured mockery - at least people have a sense of humour (not like one bloke I met on Saturday night - I could happily have assisted him with some defenestration!) It was just a matter of crashing into a patio door really.

  • Comment number 48.

    Afternoon all

Sorry no time to make any song choices today, first day back at work after 2 weeks off :(

    Hope everyone's OK

#49 Thanks Deebee - did you have a good holiday?

  • Comment number 52.

Hi Tortie, Kev. What's occurring. Extraordinary amounts of e-mails usually await me upon my return from being away. Takes aaaaages to sort out.

  • Comment number 53.

#49 Yes it was great thanks - seems a long time ago now though as I've been back a week, and the tan's already fading. How about you?

  • Comment number 54.

    Hello Everybody,

Second Darren's 'Sound and Vision' by David Bowie and also suggest

'Accidents Will Happen' by Elvis Costello.

Hope the day is good for everybody

#52 - Well in my current role i only get emails when absolutely necessary. People tend to want to speak face to face if at all possible. Email culture hasnt pervaded Univeristy life just yet - well, not here, anyway! 2 and a half weeks away, 29 emails - sorted!

    Tall chaps v Little people

    Fascinating

I won't say what the scores are - that would spoil it.

#64 I heard it, but no mensh.

  • Comment number 67.

So then, The Wiggles. What did everyone think? What were the stats, more nights at Madison Square Garden than Coldplay? More CD sales than AC/DC? Obviously very popular then. However, I suspect that would be with a demographic other than the one which generally listens to R2 after 6 p.m.

Surely The BBC could have found a better spot for them.

    I know, I'm such a curmudgeon.

#68 I'm guilty of that on most Mondays :-)

#67. Can't argue. But I think that their audience are elsewhere, and the Beeb might have pitched them better, having got hold of them. Maybe even on Steve Wright.

Well, it would have made me happy, anyway...
