Boom and indeed Bang

Simon Mayo|08:20 UK time, Thursday, 27 May 2010

Ok well here's the deal. It is Eurovision weekend and all the delights of that extraordinary competition will be brought to you by the great Ken Bruce on Saturday. What I have been wondering is whether it is possible to mark Eurovision without playing any. This will be down to your ingenuity. So songs to mark a European (with er, Israel too) singing competition without any Eurovision hits is the order of the day. Interpret that how you will and leave your cleverness in the box below.

And Nige is on an away week this week so its Salmon En Croute or salmon en croute maybe. Those pastry aromas will be wafting through your radio after 6. If indeed pastry has aromas. Oh well. Have a great Thursday and see you after 5.

Pastry. Hmmm ... can't beat a hot sausage roll from Greggs The Bakers! Shame I have toothache, else I'd be in there this morning queueing for one!

How about European Female by The Stranglers?

    Much love

    Hello All,

Bit corny but 'The Final Count-down' by Europe comes to mind, (but I do worry about what comes to my mind sometimes!)

Hope the day is good for everybody

Lovely, lovely meal at The York & Albany. Service and ambience poor though. The Gal and I agreed Maze is far better in the latter departments.

So, back to work and will catch you all laters. Be good poppets, be blessed, be Blesspoppets."

    Morning Simon,

Thanks for the mensh and song yesterday.

Darren, you beat me to it with London Calling. Vienna by Ultravox now reminds me of the wonderful Gene Genie going to Alex's rescue (shooting at that restaurant window....)

I'll just have to go with my second choice:

The Return Of The Los Palmas Seven by Madness

Deevs- hope that the dentist visit brings great relief. It sounds as though you are well on the way to becoming a true West Midlander with your Greggs sausage rolls!!

To everyone else, hope that you are all ok and that Spike had a lovely birthday meal last night.

    Morning All

First of all my thoughts are with Chris' regular bloggers who have lost one of their members. I'm only an occasional lurker on there so I didn't really know Beez, but it is a sad day for those who did.

I will get my thinking cap on about Eurovision related songs. The one that came to mind when I saw Simon's tweet about it this morning was "We are the Champions" by Queen, but I think that might be a bit optimistic having heard this year's UK entry....

Morning all!! How drunk did I get last night? Actually, not at all - that's the problem.

    So anyway, 3 word Thursday:

    Chippie at lunchtime

And I have to endorse the Final Countdown suggestion, by Europe.

Have a great day all, and let's talk more about the meet-up.

  • Comment number 18.

Good Morning Each! I must say, I quite like todays topic, and my first suggestion would be...

    'Sad Songs' by Elton John.

  • Comment number 19.

#14 Echo that - farewell Beez, go in peace and be one with the universe of love.

  • Comment number 20.

or... anything by GARBAGE, or anything by Peter TOSH

  • Comment number 21.

#14 deffo - thoughts be with them.

  • Comment number 22.

#16 You beat me to it with Abba, Mark - I was just about to suggest it.

  • Comment number 23.

#14 Only just caught up with this. I too am only a lurker, but what sad news - RIP Beez.

  • Comment number 24.

    # 22 Sorry about that Dee struggling with this one

  • Comment number 25.

    or...

'A Song For Europe' by Roxy Music

    or...

'Don't Play That Song' by Mariah Carey

    or...

'Good Song' by Blur. Oh no, sorry, obviously not.

    or...

    'Hell Song' by Sum 41

    or...

    'TV Crimes' by Black Sabbath

Do you see where I'm Coming from. I'm probably not best suited to this category after all ;0)

  • Comment number 26.

Ooh, ooh. I've just thought of an entirely legitimate suggestion...

'Sound And Vision' by David Bowie

    Ha!

  • Comment number 27.

    Or...

' You Sound Like Your Sick' by The Ramones.

    (I'm back on track)

  • Comment number 28.

With reference to half the acts, 'Who are you?' by the Who?

  • Comment number 29.

I'm guessing here Paul, I don't think you like the Eurovision Song contest do you?

Who could forget some of the classics like .........um.........wait a bit they'll come to me.......OHH yes - Save your kisses for me - Brotherhood of Man.......

Happy birthday to the elder master Deebee (who by the way is shouting at you on FB).

As for tracks to play, what about the Birdie Song - a song that should have been on Eurovision.......

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 30.

Does anyone else struggle with the Eurovision thingy? I try very hard every year not to watch it as I feel it is such rubbish when there is this amazing variety of really good songs and artists out there....but it's like I get drawn in....it is so bad..I have to at least see the points being totted up!! Please pray for me!!!

  • Comment number 31.

How about "Oh what a circus" by David Essex?

#29 Thanks mtd - hope he's not embarrassing me. I'll have a look at lunchtime. Yes, my baby boy has now reached the grand old age of 20. So if my claim yesterday to have got married at 4 is true, I must have been 12 when I had him....

  • Comment number 32.

#29. Whatever gave you that impression?

    A couple more...

'Bloc, Bloc, Bloc' by O.M.D. (Voting patterns, you see)

And I think we should get...

    'Twenty Points' by Buffalo Tom.

  • Comment number 33.

#31 To be honest, once you're married at 4, there's little scope left for surprises!

  • Comment number 34.

    Morning / Afternoon all...

Surely sticking with the theme of something that sums up 'EuroVision', we should go with the TOGMIESTER himself and play Terry's Flora Dance.

Never entered, never won, but he *was/is* still the first thing many of us remember about the whole Competition.

    Hope everyone is well!

Also for 3 word Thursday: Weekend, Hurry Up.

  • Comment number 35.

The only good thing about Eurovision is that the infinite wisdom (I'm lying) of the Radio 2 bosses in moving Bob's show back from 10 to 11 and then from 11 to midnight means that the Euro-garbage no longer impacts on the length of Bob's show. I'm anticipating that Bob will be doing the Sunday breakfast show by the time the suits have finished their meddling :-)

It's funny isn't it: all those years when Rockpalast was, I think, broadcast under the Eurovision banner so presumably available to the Beeb and they didn't bother to show it, but we still got and get this nonsense every year. It's just an excuse to waste money, and long may we continue not to win it.

Thursday in 3 words? Eurovision Grumpiness Rules :-)

  • Comment number 36.

My first ever Day In Three words is my "new favourite band" (except they're far from new)

    THE PINEAPPLE THIEF

Can be SPOTted, etc (others, blah blah blah......)

  • Comment number 37.

I used to love Eurovision when I was a kid. It was the first TV programme I saw in colour (okay I am a bit older than 32 - just a bit, mind!) I think the problem is I grew up, and Eurovision didn't.

  • Comment number 38.

I used to love Eurovision when I was a kid. It was an annual treat to be allowed to stay up and watch it. And it was the first TV programme I saw in colour (okay I am a bit older than 32 - only a bit, mind!). I think the problem is I grew up, and Eurovision hasn't.

  • Comment number 39.

#37 #38 - sorry, had a blip on the old 'puter there and thought the message hadn't posted, so I wrote it again

  • Comment number 40.

#39 Glad you clarified that - just thought it was my 7th sense of De ja vu. What's the French for de ja vu?

  • Comment number 41.

    Afternoon all,

Wow! A huge blog yesterday. I didn't get to look at it until late, but belated congrats to Spike and to all who had a mensh.

Somewhere from the depths of my brain, a couple of thoughts are....

JE SUIS UN ROCK STAR by dear old Bill Wyman, or possibly

LOST IN FRANCE by Bonnie Tyler

    Must dash again....

    Dave

  • Comment number 42.

#40 Now you're being silly, it's le deja vu.

  • Comment number 43.

Would I? Would 'I' be silly.

    Don't answer that.

You have a good slap up dinner Spike?

  • Comment number 44.

#43 see #11, yes thanks! It's great to be served top quality food rather than cook it oneself (!) ;-)

  • Comment number 45.

Sorry! Not paying attention again - I thought I'd read them all but somehow managed to strategically skip over that one. Shame about the service though.

  • Comment number 46.

Hello Blogpoppets - hope you're all having a decent Thursday.

Last evening, after our multi-celebratory blogday - a few of us hung in there right through to Radcliffe & Maconie time - I thought I'd catch up with the CLP blog. So very saddened to hear the devastating news of lovely Jane's passing and what a stark reminder of the fragile nature of our mortality ..

.. live each day as though it were your last, they say? Hell yeah!

    xx

  • Comment number 47.

    #46 well said Katy!

  • Comment number 48.

I am sure that Beez would appreciate the lovely comments on here today.

As an off the wall suggestion for tonights show - how about Sylvia by Focus (a european group from Germany if I am not mistaken - I am sure that somebody will correct me if I am). This was one of Beez's regular requests for ARF.

    mtd ffb xxx

  • Comment number 49.

Just have a little time to get back here - suggestion for tonight -

JE SANS FRONTIERS - Peter Gabriel

Apologies if someone's already requested it.

    Tortie x

    PS #46 Completely agree, Katy!

  • Comment number 50.

#48 Focus were/are Dutch. I was going to wait for Ken to correct you, but it was just too tempting! Whilst in pedant mode (Sorry Nic!) PG sang Jeux Sans Frontiers.

*crawls back under weighty tome of righteousness*

  • Comment number 51.

#50 thank you. Not wanting to out pedant you or to give you a hernia having to lift that tome every time but wasn't the PG song in English and called Games without Frontiers???

    (whistles the refrain)....

#46 as Mr Mayo tells us daily it's later than you think :-)

  • Comment number 53.

There have been some great suggestions today - must admit I struggled a bit with the theme and I'm not expecting a mensh, but some of the rest of you certainly deserve one. I've got three words though: BABY'S TWENTY TODAY.

I will be listening in eager anticipation!

    *groan, huff*

Agreed. My careful use of language shows that we have concord. As opposed to the partly French, demised aircraft.

*wheeze, sigh (I am, after all, a year older now)*

  • Comment number 55.

#50 Well corrected Spike - I did know that, but as I said earlier, very busy today and didn't re-read before I posted!

#51 It was, and it was sung in English, but it's the only thing I could think of with a 'European' title

    *skulks back under the desk*

  • Comment number 56.

    #53

Ooo 'eck Deebee - he's really going to thank you for that! Your son, I mean, not Simon en Croute ...

  • Comment number 57.

I haven't really bothered with trying to think of a Eurovision-themed track ... after all, I received a mighty mensh yesterday, and have attention-sought quite enough these last couple of months ...

So as all the best ones have been suggested. So I shall second/third/fourth Games Without Frontiers - and if it gets a play I will seek no reward

    ;^)

Too much talking - where's the music?

  • Comment number 61.

Evening all! Well I survived the trip to London and back - managed to get a parking space in the Chinatown car park - Hurrah!

    Too lkate to blog my choice but I did get in a quick cheeky tweet whilst in London, for;

DA DA DA by TRIO, being a song that should have been a Eurovision hit but never was...

Did I hear rightly that Slash is on tonight? I'm reading his autobiography at the moment! If you are a rock fan, it's an hilarious read!

  • Comment number 62.

Only 61 posts? (well, 62 now). Bit of a poor show after yesterday's party.

#56 Simon en Croute - LOL!

  • Comment number 63.

    60's ARF. Whoo-hoo!

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, please Simon, with 'Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold', released on the 1967 album, Gorilla. Ta!

  • Comment number 64.

Kev - I purchased Slash's book after one of the CLP Bloggers recommended it. My problem with it though is that the print is so so so tiny it hurts my eyes to read it - even with me bins on! Maybe I need to persevere .....

Thank you for the lovely words for Beezles. It's been such a tough few days and she will be sorely missed.

Chris dedicated a song to our dear friend on Breakfast this morning - if you want to listen again it's immediately after the 8.30 news headlines, but be warned ... hankies at the ready.

Much love to you all, and normal service will be resumed soon.

#64. Well said, Deevs! I heard the song played, and did indeed wipe away a tear.

  • Comment number 66.

    Evening all!

If you can't get enough of Eurovision (and let's face it, who can? ;-)) the Semi Final is on BBC3 now.

Which led me to thinking - if a Welsh bloke and a guy from Devon can sing the Cypriot entry, how about the blogpoppets house band "Hold The Mayo" writing and performing at next year's? Wouldn;t it be a hoot!

  • Comment number 67.

I CAN, and indeed have, got enough of Eurovision. I believe it happened whilst I was still in an embryonic state, waiting to be born. Mrs O S, however is a saddo, and is indeed watching that said show. Apparently, the Swiss entry translates as 'Golden Shower'. I make no further comment.

  • Comment number 68.

    Morning all you lovely peeps,

#66 Kev, my niece, who lives in the Netherlands, has just told me that their Eurovision entry has been written by Father Abraham, without his Smurfs I understand!
