#27 - not that clever Spike, just passionate about music. Speaking fo which, I went for my first session at bournemouth Hospital Radio last night. Have t go through the old CRB checks, etc. and then I will be let loose in the studio. Perhaps I should introduce Pontunes to the patients!

Great idea - "would you like to Stick (one on that nurse) or Twist (the top off your hidden wine bottle)?" Good luck Trickyslob - I'm sure you'll have a blast and the patients will love it.

Thanks for the comments re: the hospital radio stuff. I did the same thing about 10 years ago at Stoke mandeville, but the desk and hardware have changed somewhat since then. As the guy last night said, they use the same decks as Radio 2. All they need is a webcam and it woudl look the same as Simon's studio!

Just noticed that SM was looking for belters - in that case Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf (as if I needed to say) would fit the requirements exactly.

I had this vision that Radio 2 these days probably had everything on hard disk and any tune from the library would be available with a mouse-click or three? Not so?

Very much so Ken. There is a mixing desk or two, witha touch sensitive flat screen between them. That's where they can dial up the songs. I went for a tour around BBC SOuth in Southampton last year, and it was amazing how techie it all is (and how intuitive!). Also intriguing was the company mail system, in that anyone can send a messgae straight to anyone else in the BBC and it will flash up on screen in front of them. Unlike email, you do not have to have Outlook etc. runnning. So, Simon could be happily DJ'ing away when Joe Bloggs of BBC Hebrides accidentally sends a message to him and it would flash up on his console!

How about "Something About You" by Level 42 - a belter if ever I heard one.



It looks like I've started something. Can't wait for Simon to refer to the SLOBs on the show.

So, I'd love to hear "Jollity Farm", from the album "Gorilla", or perhaps "Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold". Or "Twilight" for MTF.

Tricky, why CRB checks to sit behind a mike? I have just had to have them done, bacause we are adding alcohol to our shops range. Now, to my mind, selling alcohol should NOT bring me into contact with impressionable minors,and yet, being a newsagent for 20 odd years, means I have employed hundreds of kids at thirteen and over, for which no checks are neccessary. Seems a bit backwards to me.

No doubt at least one studio needs to keep a couple of CD players for Bob, assuming he still brings his own CDs in with him to do his shows :-)



Be interested to know whether the hard discs contain lossless formats of the tunes or whether they're compressed? When DAB started I paid £800 for an Arcan Alpha 10 DAB receiver - the first HiFi DAB tuner. It all sounded fantastic - no 5 Live Sports Extra, no 6 Music, no BBC 7, no 1 Extra and everything broadcasting at 192 kBps. It all sounded great, and almost worthy of "near CD" quality sales pitch.



Now only Radio 3 is at that rate - Radio 2 and others reduced to 128kBps joint stero to fit the additional sations in, and to be honest I listen to radio as much on line as on my HiFi now as it's not worth the effort of turning the HiFi on.



I love my iPpod and my iPhone and the portability they give, but it's really sad that the popular music stations as broadcast into radio receiving equipment aren't considered worthy of a "HiFi" experience any more.

#40 Hi Paul, I have to have the CRB checks done because I will be going onto the wards collecting requests from patients. I assume I will also be going round the children's wards (hopefully dressed like Timmy mallet circa 1986). What surprises me is that they do not accept my current CRB certificates - I am a Governor at my daughter's school and an FA Level 2 football coach who coaches footie to 8 year olds. I now have 3 current CRB certs but I still need to go for another one, at the hospitals expense. What a waste of money!

Barrowman was very good I thought when I saw him in Miss Saigon. Cracking performance in the "Last Night of the World" duet, which is a great song hidden in a lot of musical nonsense :-)

Tricky, it keeps someone in a job. I'd like to wish you all the best this weekend against Wednesday, but unfortunately I cant. You see, if both Sheffield teams lose, that adversely affects my sales of The Green 'Un, and I plainly want to see Sheff. Utd. soundly trounced. Maybe next week. #46 Good point. I guess HiFi broadcasting is incompatible with the modern need to make programs available on demand for 7 days. I like the flexibility of the new media so it's a price that has to be paid.

Does anyone here have The Albion Band's "Rise Up Like The Sun"? I was reading up about it last night and utubing, having remembered seeing John Tams and Barry Coope at the Borderline a few years ago ("Lay Me Low" is a lovely song as they perform it together and I went to the gig purely on the back of hearing them do it live on Mike Harding's show). Apparently "Rise Up..." is one of the three essential folk-rock albums alongside "Liege and Lief", which I have, and one other which I can't remember. It's blooming expensive though :-( Looks like it's in short supply despite a re-release in the last decade.

#97 Yes. It was remastered with some additional tracks but looks like it's out of print. It's not in Ashley's shop on his website and it's upwards of £40 with those Amazon sellers claiming to have new copies of the non-remastered version for sale.
