Hyphen-ated hits

Simon Mayo|09:36 UK time, Thursday, 18 February 2010

And so goodbye to punctuation week with hyphenated hits. Not dashes, not minuses, both too big but the humble hyphen. -. Thats all we want, a simple -. I've got a song title with 4 hyphens ready to go but if you can beat that, the stage is yours.

Half-term in this house means 1 at work, 1 asleep and 1 on a sleepover. Which all adds up to a silent house so it's down to me to start things going and thankfully the iplayer is helping out here. I'm writing this while catching up with last night's Mike Harding show. So many great tunes in 1 hour particularly the Kathryn Tickell compilation. She plays the Northumbrian small pipes and Mike was showcasing a new compilation which I shall purchase as soon as I have finished this!

Its Nige time tonight so food to the fore again. It appears its a tough listen if you're on a long journey home and the digestive juices start to flow. So sorry about that but we plan to continue in exactly the same vein tonight with Moussaka!

Last Pontunes for a bit tonight as an old favourite returns next Monday at 5.40. More details next week.

  • Comment number 6.

    Good morning all

#1 Thought you were requesting an Abba song for a moment there, Deevs!

No idea for a hyphenated song at the moment. I'll keep thinking, but in the mean time, an old favourite? Ooh, how exciting! Please let it be True Confessions, Simon!

    Morning everyone,

My Suggestion is 1-2-3 by Len Barry.

    Thought of Shang-A-Lang as well.

  • Comment number 11.

    #10

I don't know that they are the best now, Deevs, but I certainly thought so when I was about 13!

I'll go with the Bay City Rollers -I haven't heard them in ages.

I'm looking forward to Nige's Moussaka - I've been thinking about making it. Deevs, you'll have to let us know how your recipe compares to his.

    #5

I think you may have got it, Spike.

  • Comment number 12.

    Morning Simon,

How about Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day by Gilbert O'Sullivan?

Or A-Ha with Take On Me, although it is the group name that has the hyphen not the song!

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 13.

Didn't Thomas Dolby do a song about a very busy hyphen ??

  • Comment number 14.

Keeping the Pat Metheny flag fluttering feebly, how about "5-5-7" from the superb Letter From Home album?

  • Comment number 15.

#5 I also agree with you Spike, I normally go down to put my chickens to bed when Pontunes comes on. Can't see the point of it.

  • Comment number 16.

Or this has 4 hyphens too:

    Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu by Bad Manners

What is the chance of getting that one played Simon??

  • Comment number 17.

    #13 .... Hyphenactive!?!?!

    Good one!

    LOL

    x

  • Comment number 18.

Another one, from the Carpenters or the Marvellettes take your choice, Beechwood 4-5789

  • Comment number 19.

Good Morning fellow bloggy persons.....no ideas at all...except to say Simon - PLEASE DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLAY ANYTHING BY THE BAY CITY ROLLERS!!! I couldn't stand them the first time.....there.....forgive me...but there are limits....( chunters as disappears into distance and returns to desk....)

  • Comment number 20.

I'll buy Spike a virtual pint if Pat Metheny gets played on day time radio today :-)

First Circle would be a radio-friendly sort of tune. Very good live too.

  • Comment number 21.

#20 ....and I'll gladly drink it, why thank you kind sir!

  • Comment number 22.

Got to go....but new post up on FB - your 10 worst tunes / artists!!

  • Comment number 23.

Simon has announced on twitter that he has a 6 hyphen song title. Can't compete with that.( I, too, hope its not that dreadful itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini!)

Eintstein A Go-Go by Landscape would be good Simon. Pleeease!

  • Comment number 24.

    I meant Einstein!

  • Comment number 25.

#10 #11 #19 I actually went to see the Bay City Rollers in Chatham, BEFORE they became mega-stars. They were supported by Smokey - anyone remember them?

Yes, I really am that old :-(

  • Comment number 26.

#22 Thanks Rev, that was cathartic!

  • Comment number 27.

    #25

I remember Smokey - weren't they from Bradford? I think I had a cassette of theirs - I'm really that old too!

  • Comment number 28.

New FB discussion from The Rev is great! Gives me an idea for another....later!

  • Comment number 29.

#27 Yes, I think they were from Bradford, Tortie. I'm trying to think what their hit was - did they do "Living next door to Alice"?

  • Comment number 30.

    # 29 Yes, that was theirs, as well as "Don't Play Your Rock and Roll to me"

  • Comment number 31.

    JV's playing one of my Top 10, so I'm re-tuning to R5 !

  • Comment number 32.

Afternoon Each, where'd the morning go? Hows about "Diamond-Hard Blue Apples Of The Moon" by The Nice? I know, I know, it aint gonna happen, so in reality I'd like to second Ticketyboo, ('ey up, Tickety) and her rather fine Cocteau Twins suggestion. Not really about very much again today, so I wish you all a fond fare-ye-well, and will see y'all on the morrow.

    I'll be listening.

  • Comment number 33.

Luchtime, so I'm back for a while. Which is probably the signal for the rest of you to go off and do other things, leaving me talking to myself.

I'm quite excited about this evening, actually. We're going to see my favourite comedian (and some time Radio 2 presenter)* Lee Mack. I've already been to a recording of his sitcom "Not going out" so I've seen him "live" before, but this is the first time I've seen his stand-up show. He is sooo funny - reminds me a bit of Eric Morcambe, who was one of the greatest, imo. I hope he signs autographs after the show, like Jimmy Carr does - although not sure how long Mr9 will be prepared to hang around.

    DB9

*Don't worry Simon, Lee isn't my favourite Radio 2 presenter. That would be Richard Hammond......

I haven't got much time today to trawl through the internet trying to find hyphenated songs so I suppose I'm just going to have to say anything by the B-52s please.

Love the show, the host, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, ,the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN!!!

  • Comment number 35.

"Umbrella-ella-ella" by Rhianna. Probably not, but you'll all be singing it this afternoon now. (teehee!!)

  • Comment number 36.

..and here was me, DeeBee, just about to wish you joy for tonight, and then you go and do that to me...tsk tsk..I feel the same way about that song, as the Rev feels about the BCRs..

Have a good time anyway :-) Off to battle the elements now.....

  • Comment number 37.

Afternoon all - probably too late to be chosen but howe about "Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu" by Bad Manners?

  • Comment number 38.

#35 that backfired slightly - can't stop singing it myself now!

  • Comment number 39.

#16 - sorry mcw, didn;t see your post before I put mny two pennorth in!

  • Comment number 43.

Unless I have misunderstood, Mr. Mayo seems to have set us a challenge i.e. he has a 6 hyphen song ready to roll at 5, unless we come up with a better one - presumably 7 or more (but then you would only know that if you are on twitter)

Remind me, what is the point of this blog?

During the cooking spot can we have something by Neil Moussaka/Sedaka?

    #43

Dunno Nic - communication with like minded listners? Or was that just a rhetorical question?

  • Comment number 46.

#43 I am of the same opinion Nic. I also noted Simons comment see #23.

It seems like this blog is surplus to requirements as far as the Drivetime show is concerned. It is struggling to compete with the Goliath that is Twitter. Shame cos there are some lovely folks here.

  • Comment number 47.

Tortie - I suppose what I meant was more aimed at it seems it's a 1-way communication i.e. Bloggers to Blog owner, whereas with Chris Evans, it felt and feels more like a 2-way communication.

    Nic

  • Comment number 48.

#43 you got your grumpy hat on today Nic?

    I wondered that too!

    #47

I know what you mean Nic. When the show and blog first started I felt that we were being 'listened to', but we don't seem to even get a mention anymore.

However, I have noticed (and it could well be pure coincidence) that some of the tracks we suggest on this blog get played on the breakfast show a day or so later.

I'm not one for arguing but I don't think Simon ignores the blog.

I think he probably uses his phone in the morning and early afternoon for most stuff so emails and twitter just end up being used more often than the blog.

Come later in the afternoon when he is in the studio he is more likely to look at the blog and during the show but by that time there is usually over a hundred comments.

I'll probably get modded for saying this but if you like we could all refrain from blogging, twitting and emailing one day so the chances of an individual's suggestions been paid attention to are increased. This is only a comment and not intended to encourage anyone to do anything against house rules.

Love the show, the host, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, ,the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN!!!

  • Comment number 52.

#50 Tortie - Yes, I've noticed that but thought it was just me in a state of befuddlement - thankfully, it would appear not - huzzah!

    #51 *gasps* - rebel!

    Nic

  • Comment number 53.

I think Tortie's got it about right - #45. Yes, I'd love to get a mention, but that's not my main reason for being here. Also, I'm still a bit vague about how Twitter works, but isn't it only Simon himself who can see his messages on there? Whereas any of his researchers (or indeed, anyone in the world who logs onto the Radio 2 website!) can read this blog. So maybe he leaves it to the researchers to look on here for ideas.

    Just a thought...

  • Comment number 54.

DB9 - In which case, if we are contributing to the content of the show, don't you think we deserve a mention, particularly as we are all doing it for free?! Yes, I enjoy the chat but we could do that on FB; we don't need the blog to do it; just to bring us together in the first place.

    Nic

  • Comment number 55.

    #52 Nic

Perhaps we're both befuddled - I thought I was going to have to get my coat!

    #53

I didn't know how Twitter worked DB, but what you've said makes sense.

  • Comment number 56.

Come on Blessblogtasticpeeps - We's having fun isn't we? It would be good to hear from Simon and/or his team how they view the blog, but as long as it's here I'm grateful. Mensh or no mensh! I feel I've made a connection with so many great people and that's priceless. Anyway...

    CDF, #44, that was funny.

Deebs - have a fab time tonight - my niece saw Lee Mack a few weeks ago and said he was amazingly good.

I'm off to old Londinium town tonight to see Preston Reed with m'lad - got a promise of a pint with him after the show!

  • Comment number 57.

#54 Nic, I hadn't thought of it like that - a very good point. Perhaps we should threaten to go on strike - if we weren't here, there wouldn't BE a blog, would there!

  • Comment number 58.

Thanks to CDF's marvellous ability to catalogue, there are around 30 bloggers and I'd venture to suggest that only just over half of that number blog regularly/daily.

So what do we expect? If it was my job so to do, I wouldn't want to trawl through our natterings if all I was looking for were song title suggestions!

    This Spike's not for Striking!

  • Comment number 59.

#58 I don't know, Spike. I think our natterings are very entertaining!

I do wonder how many tweets he gets each day though...

  • Comment number 60.

#59 Deebs, I couldn't agree more - will someone please pay me to go through them?! ;-)

  • Comment number 61.

1:41 and 3:11 were last hyphenated song suggestions...

    Cash payments only please....

    ;-)

  • Comment number 62.

#54 Personally, my whole life is generated around Simon mentioning my name. There are 6 things I depend on in my life; my wife, my cats, air, water, food and Simon Mayo reading out my name.

If any of these are removed I display instant withdraw symptoms, (mainly crying into my pillow).

I'm thinking of setting up an SMA support group to take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

Love the show, the host, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, ,the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN!!!

  • Comment number 63.

#62 You may need a resident pastor - any suggestions?

Off now peeps, play nicely and shout "Good old Spike" when he plays Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da

  • Comment number 64.

Wahay - made it back from Lunnon. Noah's fludde, notwithstanding.

Hello Blogpopsters! Will now catch up on the previous 62 posts. have I missed anything???

    xx

  • Comment number 65.

    WELL DONE SPIKE!!!

  • Comment number 66.

Yes indeed - let's hear it for Spike! Hip. hip....

  • Comment number 67.

    No mensh though....

  • Comment number 68.

No, noe at all - do you think the Great Man reads this blog? Or was it always planned?

  • Comment number 69.

Who knows - perhaps you should have a word Rev...

  • Comment number 70.

Do you think Leona will ever sing a song that doesn't sound like a dirge?

  • Comment number 71.

#69 Perhaps I should but my problem (taking onboard all the previous disucssion about this) is that "they" encourage us to blog and twitter and text.... why if there's no mensh? Why encourage interaction with the public and then ignore it? What is the point?

  • Comment number 72.

OK - just caught up with blogvox so far [having muted a wailing Leona].

The thing is: Tweets go direct to Simon - no faffing around, a streamlined 140 characters, no extraneous communication with other tweeters. The man is in control. Stands ter reason really. Like Direct Line. He or his researchers don't have to wade through fascinating, compelling, inspiring, thought-provoking, dialogue between his listeners - such as WE provide. Rather like the one-page CV [and Deevs will know more about that than I] - speed is all.

It's a dog-eat-dog world. But I, for one, am very happy to be a Blogpoppet mongrel

    :)

  • Comment number 73.

    well done Tickety!

  • Comment number 74.

#72 Thing is KatyMac, before I joined this Blog and its wonderful participants I didn't know anything about FB and tweeting - now I do both! I know what you're saying and some people like Imogen Heap don't seem to communicate any other way than tweeting.

  • Comment number 75.

    #74 Oh yes agreelots Rev

Twitter is the fastfood of communication technolololology. Cheap, quick, instant. Shallow? Arguable. I'm following some very witty individuals and I've learned about brevity, if nothing else!

We should embrace what we have here. We don't REALLY need to have our collective voice validated by a 'Mensh from the Mayo' - do we???

  • Comment number 76.

Bigger? Bolder? Something we might recognise? Could it be...confessions???

  • Comment number 77.

#76 I'm keeping everything crossed Tricky

  • Comment number 78.

righto, I'm off - have a great evening, whatever you do!

  • Comment number 79.

I'm off too - gotta eat and get ready for Lee Mack. Oh, I DO love a man who can make me laugh! Mr9 better watch out...

Tomorrow I'm off to Cornish Darren's part of the world. I'm getting together with some old schoolmates to celebrate our joint *cough*tieth birthdays (I don't come from there - one of my friends owns a B&B and we're all staying with her). So I won't be around, and I'll miss the show too (sorry Simon). I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the ARF opener goes to a blogger

    Love ya all

    Deebee9 XxX

  • Comment number 80.

Thanks Simon for playing Einstein A Go-Go, and for playing A-ha(didn't think you would play one of theirs as Steve played A-ha earlier).

Well done to Spike and Tickety!

#76. The return of an old favourite. But is it an old Mayo fave? I'd like to see The Identik Hit Quiz back. Or is it an old Drivetime fave? In which case, The Mystery Voice? Anyways, only popped in for a jiff, and have to hop off again now. Lovely evenings, each.

  • Comment number 82.

Ah, the Mystery Voice - "Whoooo, are you? Who-who, who-who"...now THAT was a good quiz!

  • Comment number 83.

I guess it coudl even be shades of Radio 1 and "Bits and Pieces"...DLT returning, perhaps????

#83 DLT? All I can remember about the hairy cornflake was when Noel Edmonds did a Gotcha on him while doing his darts game. Hey!, maybe thats it!

I wasn't on the blog last night but I did listen to the first part of the show while on my way to a Colin Blunstone concert. Well done Spike, and whoever else got a direct or indirect mention.

What's the opening song going to be tonight?

Love the show, the host, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, ,the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN!!!

  • Comment number 85.

Morning one and all. So enjoyed catching up on last evenings bloggetry - top quallity as ever and though I hesitate to pick out any one sentiment, I think KM's #72 & 75 (last paras) says it all (oh, and # 65, 66 and 80 & 84 of course!)

The Lad and I had the MOST amazing evening in the presence of greatness. Preston Reed is a legend and such a nice guy to boot, very humble and he seemed to enjoy the intimate venue as much as the audience. If you get the chance to see him, don't let it pass! Check out "Love In The Old Country" (available, etc....) which he describes as the soundtrack to a movie Fellini never made....

The pre-match curry was also exceptional! So, taking Ben back to Guildford today and a spot of shopping for The Gal's birthday pressie - all ideas welcome!!! Have a jolly day ARFing away, blogmongrelpuppydogs x

Hoping to 'work' from home today - which means I can come in here and waffle on - butbutbut ... Deebee is going away [enjoy!] and SpikeyDad is busy ...

    ... is anybody out there?

  • Comment number 88.

    Morning all.

DLT was on BBC Three Counties (Beds, Bucks and Herts) a while ago. And still doing his snooker/darts on the radio thing if I remember correctly.
