Bass! How low can you go...
"Monday Monday, so good to me. Monday Monday it was all I dreamed it would be" sang the Mamas and the Papas in 1966 and as the rain thrashes down on a cold and gloomy day here, you might feel moved to differ and that we need some Californian sun very soon. In fact I feel moved to suggest to someone important at the BBC that we should have a Drivetime cruise together, ending up in Monterey and go surfing. I can't imagine there'll be a problem, see you on the games deck for quoits and tequila at 6.
While we are waiting for that to happen, lets get on with the show. Terms and conditions require our opening song to feature a double bass if you please. Slap it , pluck it or bow it but just get me some double bass hits pdq! Might be rockabilly time but over to you.
Also today after 6 we have comedian Rhys Thomas star of Bellamy's People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after its debut this weekend.
And Matt and Rebecca and Sally and you from 5...

I'd suggest Runaway Boys though - 1980 Stray Cats hit. The blesspoppetry that is Guillemots have a female double bass player and as far as i know she plays it on all their records...in which case "Annie Let's Not Wait" would be basstastic.

Or, for a grungier take on things, how about Pearl Jam's "Nothing As It Seems", from the album "Binaural" - mind you, that isn;t really a hit, is it?
Anyway, whichever one gets played, it's a great choice as the double bass doesn;t get the number of radio outings it deserves.
So, how do you play "air double bass" in the car on the way home from work then?
Cheers,

Will be seeing the aforementioned Danny T playing double bass in the house band at the Transtlantic Sessions concert on Saturday week at the RFH - lip-smackingly delicious, can't wait.

I think the Lennon thing was a bit of a street cult legend rumour thing. Anyway, the show's off to a great start, or it will be when they play Guillemots or The Cure or The Dodge Brothers or Guillemots or .... Prefab Sprout!

Hmm. A spike is a kind of point, is it not? Exactly the sort of thing I am continually missing. I'm looking at a darkened room with a bed now, and am off to make use of it.

Simon, I really must protest Sir, I was the first to suggest Rock This Town on your blog and you didn't even mention me when you played it!!! This didn't happen when Chris was doing the show! ;^)
I turned you off tonight, in protest and put my Ipod on - Humph!

Aww - missed all the blogbuddiness yesterday due to proper GrownUpDriver stuff - M1, M3, NorthFlippinCircular, M25 - profound and deep joy.
Now time for CLP, pot of tea, catch up in here. Really liking the vibe - can we achieve more than 100 comments?
Nic - wondered who chose opening track - shame on the Mayo for not giving you a shout out. Am thinking that the ubiquitossity they call Twitter may well be spawning track suggestions? Could this be competition? Bring it on, I say.
Deevs, Spikeadiddles and fellow Beatlesfansters - not heard fer ages track at end of the .. ahem .. Big show - 'Don't Bother Me' written by MySweetGeorge? - all minor key yumminess.
Heading for Dorchester today - hope to return intact.

I didn't recognise any of the names that Simon read out for the first record, so I can only assume there were from Twitter, although he usually says so (I really do need to get a life!)

Tickety - it's blimmin' freezypop here in Essex - 1 degree according to the mega Micra.
Mr Mayo does indeed like his Tweeters. I follow him over there - he even tweeted me once when I told him off for laughing on air at an injury picked up by an Arsenal player, but as for choosing the first song - the blog is the way forward for me.
Good vibrations!

Simon must have noticed a number of us agreed with the early suggestion of the Stray Cats and even got the song right...perhaps he is giving publicity to the different ways suggestions come in? So hang on in there - perhaps our time will come!

I did notice that Simon played "Love Cats" during the show, I think it was Deevs' suggestion - so he is 'listening' to us.
