Waiting for a Christmas!

Taru from Rovaniemi, Finland

The main celebration of Christian People is fore coming. Jesus born 2000 years go and Christians want to remind it once a year. The life style and time was totally different then and it is really hard to seek authentic Christmas spirit today. Actually we have no real understanding what it would have been then but we can try to imagine trough Bible and history writings. Today we can see three different Christmas. The First is a religion Christmas, the second is a commercial Christmas and the third is a Non-Christmas.

People who want to have a religion Christmas follow the calendar and events of Church. There is a four pre-days at the calendar which are for the people who want to repair their souls to forward the spiritual Christmas and its miracle bearing of Jesus. The name of the Sundays is Advent. The meaning of the Advent for the Church is very important because the new year of the Church will start on the first Advent. It was 29th of November on this year. You see it is not according the Gregorian calendar at which the year starts on 1st of January. The main thing to do pre-repairing to Christmas is be on the Fast. You may do not eat meat or other energy food. You have to drink a lot of water because of two things: it refresh and keep you going on. Slowly day by day you fall in peace and calm to spend the Christmas. For these four steps, The Advent Sundays, remind us the four branched candelabrum, one branch for one Advent Sunday. The candelas are lighted one by one on each Sunday.

As a marketing world it can be said that the Church has a brand of Christmas. More and more the markets want to have people’s money. You can see the development of Christmas opening ceremony. It has been earlier and earlier on each year until now the opening ceremony of the Christmas is on the first Advent. People have more time to spend all of their money to markets. Shops and Stores are allowed to be open even on Sunday and very late on evening. After this day this rule or law is considered the whole year. It means that the shop entrepreneur or the chief of the store can decide the opening hours and times at the shop. It can be open in the middle of the night if necessary. The idea of Santa Claus enrols the commercial Christmas, Santa have to have something to give for the kind children. It is the time when you see the relatives and parents and give presents for them.

Non-Christmas is for those who don’t mind Jesus, Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, markets and spending money. Actually it can be said that such kind of person has just some day’s longer weekend. You may travel somewhere, f. ex. abroad and have sun under the palm trees, drink alcohol and be away of your relatives, all hurry and crowed places. The idea of escape is more and more fascinating idea. It is extra time for yourself and depends on you how you spend it.

We will go further to Christmas time or just the end of this month and I will share with you what all happens here during this month.

See You,
Taru

Hi Taru, I am looking forward to reading your coming posts about Christmas of 2009 in Finland. Merry Christmas, James.

Hi Taru! Great to hear from you. Xmas has become too commercialized over here as well. Because of the economic downturn the celebrations seem to have slightly toned down this year. Even in my city shops are open on Sundays, but not 24/7. It is very cold over here, but since I live in the plain it is unlikely to snow. Have a nice day!

I think the Christmas is a time for sharing Jesús with the most needy, our family and friends for my how christian this would be the christmas for others the christmas is buys and gives gifts and finaly for others not there.

Well done

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
