Between Dream Big and 'Que Sera Sera'

There is a song that might be familiar for some of us. It's about someone who asks her loved ones and being told to appreciate live as it is. Even her parent can't say if she would become a pretty lady! :) What do you think about that song if you relate it with your lives now? I personally think that there's no such advice like the song in reality. The fact is, we constantly have to strive for many things all of our lives; strive to get good marks/ achievements in school, strive to get good jobs/positions, strive to maintain relationships, etc. There is no easy life for people who want success.

Although the universal standard would define "success" as having certain (tangible) things in life, like money, position, and fame, I think that's not always the case. Of course we can dream big, but we shall remember that there is always a higher sky above us. Sometimes success means you feel content of what you have, and happy for who you are. Not what you wish to be, or what others wish you to be. For example: I want to become a doctor when I was a little kid. The reality is I wasn't born for that, and I am terrified of blood and dead corps. So I found out other things that I was good at (and satisfy my curiosity simply by watching "Grey's Anatomy" on TV) and live to the fullest.

If we have to choose between Mother Teresa and Elvis, which one do you think was more successful?

No matter how uneasy life is, especially if you compare it with others (and it's really easy to envy), let's find the source that makes us happy. We shall treasure and nurture it. Like a quote that said, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings", it is the end that matters.

PS. Nuala, your explanations had helped me to improve my English a lot. I'd never get enough of your tips. By the way, I'm still wondering about "melting pot". Thanks for sharing your holiday pics with us; they are hilarious! Tick office... :) About GWK, it's an abbreviation of this cultural park: Garuda Wisnu Kencana. It's devoted to Hindu god, Wisnu (Vishnu or god of wisdom). Garuda is a mythical bird and Vishnu's companion (our national symbol is also Garuda), Kencana could mean gold or carriage. I'm not really sure which one is it, since the statue isn't done yet. The plan is to make a 150 meter statue of Vishnu riding Garuda, and put it above this massive entertainment area. However, the statue is still in its pieces now because of the unresolved controversy about it.

Dear Shirley, I think that this song is awful! It says a lot of trivialities!Only a child can believe those things! We make our own destiny and we should strive for higher aims: "Homo faber fortunae suae". One shouldn't be satisfied with what he has, but one must always improve his condition changing something in what he does and how.

Hey Shirley I have read all your blogs and congratulations for your very good english. It is so easy to understand you and I think you sound very wisely! You asked which one was more succesful this is relative issue because both of them were succesful in their own field. Elvis lived in glory where the man quickly detours from his routes. bye

Hi Shirley You really know how to motivate us to write..happyness is something very strange, we are always looking for, and as close we get, the farest it seems to be from us, one brazilian writer said that we was born to shine. everyone of us wanted to be recognized for the things we do. evrything we do needed to be recognized to make us happy.. do you want to be recognized for your job? do you want be recognized all over the world for your work? will it make you happy? I believe that madre tereza did a good job..we need to do a good job to in order to bring happyness for us and for the people around us.. best wishes Ramilton.

......"Where you are content, life is content"..(Hi, Shirley ! How are you?)..I heard this dialogue in some movie......now I can see a living example, an epitome of happy Human in Shirley....I appreciate you and truly speaking, I am really inspired and have learned from you how to be contented. Of course, we all have to keep on striving to achieve something, to be happy. It is an wonderful experience to read your blog, read your spontaneous but meditative philosophizing. God bless you.......

You referred" If we have to choose between Mother Teresa and Elvis, which one do you think was more successful? " In my opinion, 1) there is no need to have a choice every time, sometimes, no choice is a good choice. 2) Mother Teresa and Elvis are all good and successful, I don't think it is a good way to compare that. Furthermore, I don't choose who is better between Mother Teresa, Elvis and me. I always admire them. Hopefully, my above opinions don't offend you. Best wishes, James.

Dear Shirley. Thank you for the lovely song! I think that main idea of this song is that we don't need to worry about this abstract thing like future. Of course we may and should plan our future, but we should make it without fear and doubts. Just move forward your goal with belief in your strengths and in fact that everything will be great!

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
