Books.

Hello Simon and friends,

Mercé and Bïa have asked me to write about books. Well besides films, books are another thing that I´m really into. Wherever I go I carry a book with me.
My favourite novels are the ones which explore the anguish and conflicts of human being mind. Therefore, I really enjoying reading Dostoyevsky books. His novels are very thought-provoking with an intense and gripping narrative. Consequently is quite difficult to put his books down . Moreover, Dostoyesky presents us a range of characters with an unique insight into their personalities. Hideous fathers, naive philosophers, desparete gamblers and tormented souls are just an example of some of Dostoeysky´s characters. Anyway I can´t recommend reading Dostoyesky novels enough. If you haven´t read any of his books yet, just have a go. You won´t regret :-). Simon and friends, could you tell me which are your favourite authors or books please?

My books and my kitschy little angel.

Well one of my favourite English writers is Jane Austen. I´ve read almost all her books. Her heroines are so reasonable and they are always trying to not reveal their feelings. This gives me the impression that Jane Austin was a bit like that.
Anyway, I guess I fond of her novels because they were the first books that I read in an unbridged English version :-).

Oh friends! I think we´re going to have a rainy weekend in Mogi. I was planning on going to an English workshop with some friends on Sunday. Let´s hope the weather gets better :-).

Hi Carrie! What a great news! I´ve already sent a comment on the Staff Blog. I reckon the BBC LE 2009 calendar will make our mouths watering :-).

Hi Silwal! I´m glad you´ve liked my mum´s roses. Moreover, it was very interesting to know a bit about family customs in your country :-).

Hello Cris! Our countries have so many similarities. Nice to see your comment here my friend :-).

Hi Robert! Well, I hope one day I could be as good in gardening as my mum :-).

Hi Haliza! How nice you could find time to drop some lines here when you´re in the middle of Eid preparations. Thank you :-).

Hey Hyoshil! Thank you very much for your kind comment :-). I think you´re totally right. Here on the blogs apart from learning English, we learn about other cultures and make lots of friends. It´s a fantastic experience indeed :-).

Dear Marianna! My mum is saying thank you and she´s also sending a kiss to you :-).

Hello Olesya! I´ve just seen a video of Haibane Renmei on the YouTube. Oh the colours are beautiful and I like the song played in the backgroung, so soft. By the way, is this anime about an angels school? Everybody there has wings and an aureola over their heads. Anyway, I also like to watch anime or any other film whithout dubbing. It seems that you miss something when films are dubbed. Thanks for your reccomendations :-).

Hi Liz! Could you please tell me what´s your major at university? Oh I hope we can meet on Facebook too :-).

Hey up Viviane! I´m so happy to know that my blog is being helpful to other English students too :-). Maybe some day I´ll be the one posting comments on the blog of one of your students. Oh don´t worry about authorization. This is Blogland. We´re here to learn from each other ;-). Oh please, say hello to your students for me.

You´re welcome Paulo! The Flo-Joe has been helping me a lot in my studies. By the way Paulo, do you have problems with key word transformation? This exercise and the open cloze in Use of English are the most difficult for me. I have to work a bit more in this area.

Hi Maurício! I´m glad you found my tip useful. I hope we can meet on the Facebook too :-).

Hi dear Niddo! Oooh my mum has tried to teach me something. However, I was a terrible pupil and after a while she gave up to teach me how to draw :-).

Enjoy your holidays Christine! It´s a pleasure to exchange messages with you here. Thank you very much for your comments :-).

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ana Paula.

Hello Ana Paula As I wrote in a previous post, now by now I don't have much time to read, but some of my favourites authors are Alfredo Bryce Echenique, a peruvian writer with a sarcastic sense of humor, and Dominique Lapierre & Larry Collins, with their novels of non fiction. In general, russian authors are too dense for me...Sorry. I wish you a nice weekend and good weather. Bye.

Great idea, Ana: a pic of your bookshelf - that's sooo lovely! Well, I can spot Nick Hornby's High Fidelity. I loved that book. And I also loved the movie with John Cusack (he's great - I like him very much). As for me, I'm just reading an old novel by Charles Willeford who is one of my favourite writers. He died in the 80s when he was just about to become famous. What a pity. His novels featuring detective Hoke Moseley is some of the best hard boiled crime fiction you can ever get! I just adore him!

Dear Ana Paula, seeing your library I've fallen exhausted. You're a strong reader, and the most amazing is that all are English books. My experience in English is short. I'm short of time and....(English). A good path starts whit a single step (or something like this). My first readings in English have been Alexander McCall Smith and his hilarious "44 Scotland Street" series or the most smoother "Sunday Philosophy" series or a Harry Potter. My next book will be "Mere Anarchy" the latest book of our friend Woody Allen (I don't know if he knows our special relationship with him :-)-Perhaps you or Simon have said him?-). I tried with Paul Auster but his subtle winks pass unnoticed for me in English. In Spanish I like a lot Paul Auster, Quim Monzó, Eduardo Mendoza or Carlos Ruíz Zafón. I recommend specially Zafón's "The Shadow of the Wind" or Mendoza's "The City of Miracles". Both of them are inspired in the old Barcelona. Please don't miss Zafon's book it starts is in one word "master". If you like you could go on with "Angel's game". Well, it's enough, please recommend me and easy introduction in English. (thanks in advance).

Hi! this is Daniele I have just discovered this fantastic blog(I am learning English by myself),so I was reading about your family and let me congratule to you, not only you are clever you are also very nice! gretengs from Italy!

Hi Ana Paula, Nice to meet you again. I'm so happy to see your comments one after one here.I have sent some messages to you on this board recently but, unfortunately not only my messages haven't been appeared on the board, but also I haven't been yet got your replies! First, give my congratualation to your great mum, and then I want you to do me a favour. As I told you I'm new here and I'm not familier enough with sending comment on the board. so, I can't see my comments which I send in reply to your comments and other commentators while, I'm really interested in exchanging comments on the board!I don't know if there's something wrong with me! Please, guide me if possible.Thank you so much. Karoun

Hi, Ana I haven't written recently because my computer was broken and at work I'm so busy and have no enough time to comment. Anyway nice to see you again. The first thing I've done when I turned on my computer I looked into your blog. Never disappointed. You write every day. I miss your latest blogs but I see you are writing today about books and your favourite writers. One on my favourite is like yours Jane Austin especially I like famous "Pride and Prejudice"( I've seen the film also )and of course "Sense and Sensibility". I also like Lucy Montgomery. When I was little girl I used to read each of her books about Anne of Green Gables. I've tried to read it in English recently but it's still so difficult. I've tried look for Penguin Readers but not successfully ( it would be easier for the beginning ). Anyway Ana thank you for your great blog and have a nice weekend :) Bye Ewa

I am a new commenter here.I have read very few english author's books. But i have read chicken soul sort stories. That are really good short stories. There is one Indian writesChetan Bhagat, whose books are also good.

Hi again Ana! wow you do have a lot of English books ! Between 14 and 17 I developed a passion for reading novels. I read most of Paulo Coelho's books. Some of them even twice. I like them because they give an interesting perspective about life. Very deep and philosophic. During that time I also read random books : one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, another from Isabell Allende, Dan Brown,Og Mandino and even JK Rowling. But it's been a while since I don't read for pleasure. Now that I'm at university the only books I read are related to my career (Business administration) and that sucks! Actually when my dad went to the States 2 years ago he bought 4 novels in English especially for me and I only managed to read one so far!!! (embarrassing confession, isn't it?). Want to guess which book is that list of unread novels?? ....Persuasion from Austen!! Did you liked it?was it nice? well Ana, have a great week! and sorry for writing too much haha Liz ;)

Helloooo Ana Thanks a lot dear for responding to my request! you are so kind! I love your description of your books in English, I can truly say your English is becoming better and better. Also you are using some useful and nice expression which we learned from Simon's blog like "Anyway I can´t recommend reading Dostoyesky novels enough." Congratulations Ana! Well I have a variety of very good writers, most of them are Arab writers because I usually read in Arabic my mother tongue. However I've lately read a wonderful book written by the former Bosnian president "Alija Izetbegovic" and it's called "My Escape to Freedom". I read the Arabic translation of it and it was such a wonderful book I can't recommend it enough:) Early this year I started reading English books, my first writer ever who I really love reading all his books is "Dr.Jeffrey Lang". I love the subjects he discusses in his books and for the record he is a Mathematics university teacher. I wish I'll read some novels later as I think it would be great too. Anyways, reading is something amazing. While reading you are also discovering other cultures and personalities. Reading sometimes shorten the distances and time between the writer and the reader. While reading a very old book you will sometimes feel that you are living and experiencing that period of time or that specific place. All the best Ana. Yours. Bïa

Hi Ana, My favorite author is Sidney Sheldon. I love his novel. One of my favorite is "If tomorrow comes". If you like adventure and thrill this is the kind of book you will enjoy. Most of his book selling like hotcake..Almost all have been number-one international bestsellers. I have facebook too, but how do i join the group so that I can join you all in skype?

Hi Ana Paula, what a beautiful and organized book shelf you have. It's really amazing the way you manage to find time to do so many different things. I guess it's a kind of girl stuff. I've heard that girls are much more organized than boys and can do many different things at the same time. Well, I don't know if this is true, but you sure can do a lot. I used to like to read a lot. I still do, but I can't find time to do it anymore. But you are an inspiration to us all. And maybe I'll try to find some time to squeeze in some good book. I have started reading one of Dostoyevsky's books more than once. It was, I don't know the title in English, "Crime e Castigo". It was lent to me many years ago by a friend of mine and I never returned. I liked the book a lot, although it a little hard to understand, and it's very long ,so I was never able to finish it. Maybe I can try to read it through now. Ana, once more it was a great pleasure to read your blog and talk to you. See you more. Bye, bye.

Hi Simon! Hi everybody! I read all coments about this blog. I'm very like it. I hope you understand me,because my english very poor. I wanna meet a foreign frends and comunicate. Best regards!!

Reading a book is such a pleasure. when you read, you're not just getting information and knowledge, it's more than that. Actually, you are interacting with the writer's ideas, thoughts, emotions, and getting yourself involved in his/her imagination. I don't have specific authors, but so far, I have been reading for Trawick-Smith J., Lura B., Kyriacou C.,Nina & Spada, and Moon J. These books are about teaching methodologies and psychology, so I don't think that they are interesting for all people. A piece of advice, don't judge the book by it's cover...! Thank you.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
