4th September 2008 (1st blog entry)
Hi Simon,
I'm sorry for being late!
I got a surprise visit from an old friend of mine and his wife. Entertaining my guests seemed more important than blogging at that time.
But I'm all set and ready now.
Maybe I should start with introducing myself. I'm male (obvious), 39 and from Germany. At school I hated English and was one of the worse students. I really started to learn English while travelling and working abroad. I lived three years in Canada and a half year in Scotland. I consider myself a fluent English speaker. But my handicap is my written English. After obtaining my MA in Psychology I applied for doctoral studies at the Fraser University in Vancouver. For doing so, I had to send in an essay. Writing this essay was very hard for me and I finally decided to give up my plans to continue my studies in Canada. I continue to teach psychology at the same university I graduated from. But I was not happy in doing so.
Years later I found myself working for an organisation which tries to help people in long time unemployment to re-enter the job market. There were many Russian speaking Germans (there are more than 3 million Russian speaking Germans living in Germany). I realised that their lack of language proficiency was the main barrier to find employment. So I started to teach German to those Russian speaking Germans. I loved that very much!
I decided that I want to go abroad to teach German or English (if possible). But for doing that I needed some kind of qualification. I applied for a four week CELT (Certificate of English Language Teaching) in Ireland and got accepted. I'm very excited because that course is going to start next Monday.
I tried to improve my written English during the last four months but I'm afraid it is still not very good.
Simone - please help me to "polish up" my writing skills, so I can become a language teacher in Japan.
Well - so much to my introduction!
Since a blog is a kind of diary, I'm going to tell you now what's going on in my daily life. First things first: The fair (Volksfest) is in town!
For most people this is great news. But not for me!
I live right on the edge to the fairground which means I hear the loud music from the fair and the noise of the drives (those machines which are suppose to entertain people) all night.
I made some pictures from my balcony:

And the same at night:

Yesterday I "braved" myself to join the crowd (if you can't beat them - join them!):

To escape all this turmoil, I decided to go camping about one mile down the river:

At a very exclusive and hidden place:

Well - I hope my blog entry was a little bit entertaining and I'm looking forward to your reply!
So long!
Marvin

Hi, Marvin! I’m Nata from Belarus. So I’m also a Russian speaker =).I wish I never in my live experienced what your students do – language barriers is one of the most difficult to remove. I think that your job is very interesting and noble. You just should be more self-confident and I’m sure you’ll make it! Your hidden place is wonderful! I would like to have such!=) Good luck!
Hi there^^ well...to me, your writing skills are definitely upper-intermediate. So there is no need to be modest=) I was genuinely astounded when I read that a German blogger is about to come. Therefore, I'm looking very much forward to reading about how you think about Germany as well as the way a typical German man lives^^ Enjoy yourself and kind regards André
Nice to meet you Marvin! Your entry was very entertaining and informative. Being a student blog is a great opportunity to brush up on your English. I hope you enjoy your month :-). Best wishes, Ana Paula.

Hello Marvin! Welcome to the blog! I thought I read your blog twice. It's great that you teach German to Russians and I agree that lacking language proficiency is the main barrier to find a job. Could you tell me what language do you use in the lessons, English or Russian? Hope your CELT course goes well. Tell us more about it later, will you? I sympathize with you about how upset to be persecuted with the noise, tell a bit about the Volksfest fair though, What do people do there? Thanks, Best wishes, Yen.

Hi Marvin Nice to meet you in this place, although you are late!i have no chance to go abroad, maybe it is more difficult than Europe to go abroad,so your different experiences for studying and travelling in many different countries are big envy of me,the same to you i hated enghish at school, when i graduated from college have to work in Shanghai(the biggest city in china and more international),i realized the english which was more important for me if i want to stay in shanghai and live better!! fortunately,i have cought up on my back study hardly for more than one year and keep doing this!! i want to make friends with you and share the methods to polish up the english level each other!!i happy to meet you!!Dino

How can Work in a foreign Country? I'm graduating in structural engineering..Can you suggest something to me? Thanks.. I'll read you every day. Bye
Hello Marvin! Nice to meet you. As for a scene of hustle bustle in front of your windows, I really understand what you’re talking about. It’s some kind of price we pay for living in down town. I have similar inconvenience every weekend, because my windows look straightly at Memorial of Glory. Memorial is obviously visited by any married couple just after official ceremony to pay respect warriors who gave their lives for motherland during WW2. Just married and maids bring flowers, uncork bottle of wine and take pictures in front of monument. I recon they‘re adamant that everyone has to know about arrival wedding cortege by hearing all cars’ horns aloud. See you later.
Hello Marvin, it's great to hear, or better, read, about you. I guess we'll be very lucky this month for we'll have the company of two teachers instead of one. Lucky us. I know I'm not really qualified to judge, but I'd say your writing is perfect. I don't think you'll have any problems being accepted in the program in Ireland. I loved the pictures you posted. We have festivals like that in my home town too, but they are not nearly as neat and organized as the one you showed, but they're pretty fun too. I guess you must live in a small town, don't you? Well, I hope to be in touch with you this whole month. Thank you. Good bye for now.
Hello Marvin. Very nice to meet you. It seems very clearly you have a high english level, so it will be a real defiance for those of us who don't have so good skills to blog with you during this month. Anyway, I think your story is very interesting, and even funny, in the part you take the decision to camp, to escape from the fair. As I always say, to big problems, big solutions. I hope the fair doesn't last for too long. Keep us informed. Bye and sweet dreams in your tent.
Hi Marvin, How nice to meet you, a German guy! My dad´s mum is from Germany, he came to Brazil when the first German bank was open. He went to live in Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro and then his daughter, my granny, got married to an English bloke who came to Brazil to work in a British company here! So here am I, a quarter of German, English, and the rest Brazilian! Although, I do speak German the sound of the language is quite familiar to me. It was in fact, my dad´s first language! So as you can see the "globalazation" started earlier in my family.Like you English was not my best school subject but when I became older I developed a a special interest in it and now I study it with releish, savouring every opportunity!Your account makes it evident that we all have the ability to learn a language and living abroad can do wonders to your performance! I never had the chance of living abroad, like you did, although I´ve already been abroad as a tourist. This is in fact a dream I have! Your work with the Russian seemed really interesting! It is nice when we can use our knowledge to help genuinely help people.Do you speak a bit of Russian? How was your interaction with the students?
Dear Marvin, It is pleasure to know that you are keen to learn English language as much as possible. Your post tells us that you have put all effort to improve writing skill in English. Since you had lived in Canada and Scotland, and got an opportunity to learn English speaking skill as you mentioned in your post. In my opinion, this month will be fruitful for you to learn writing skill and how much you will learn depend on how much effort you put on. You showed eagerness to help those to people who aren’t able to get job because they speak only Russian. Your enthusiasm to teach either German or English in foreign country is really appreciable. Best of luck!
Oops! A botton was pressed!! Well, why did you quit your project with the Russians? Where will you be teaching English? In Russia? In Japan? In Turkey? Is there a special place in your mind? Have you thought about taking the Delta? It is recommended for people who intend to teach English and it a recognized certification.

Welcome Marvin, it seems a little strange to me than a German wants to teach English in another countries, but perhaps it is because I like to travel like a tourist but I like to remain living in my country. I suppose you are keeping some information for the next blog, because you said that the fest is in town, but if I am right, you did'nt say where do you live. Bye

Hallow teacher, Simon it is my humble request to you, that please point out my mistakes and kindly give your valuable advice to develop my english.
Ciao, Marvin. It's not easy to come forward trying to speak in a foreign language but you came off very well in your introduction, putting yourself across as well. Your actions and choises speak of a profound interest in a sole subject: communication. And you always stick to your guns: that is clearing up the communication process you are so interested in, thinking it over even... in your tent! You pitched on, for this purpose, psychology, photography, the English language... They are, as a whole, the very thing: what you need for attaining what seems to be the aim of your life.
Hi Marvin, I am very much excited to know that your age is same that of mine. your expression is so natural and so friendly that Ican't imagine that you are a friend from long long away the country Germany.you described about a fair.Since my childhood the fair gets a nastalgic memory in my mind. This is my first time to have had a scope to write something in internet to a friend of German.Don't forget me.Iam waiting to know more from your writing. Hi Marvin, I enjoy reading your texts. Don't have a doubt about yourself, because then you get nowhere. I believe you don't need to have a doubt , because your english is perfect.
