....town or city??

Is Elche a town or a city??

It’s a good question. Well, Elche is a city, but if you ask someone from Alicante, he/she will probably answer that Elche is a town. The reason for that is the rivalry among Elche and Alicante due to football. Both of them have football teams playing in the same division, and it seems to be a tradition not to get on well with one’s neighbour.

I’ll tell you briefly the history of Elche. Elche has had two important settlements. The first one was two kilometres away from the today’s city. There are remains from the Neolithic period until the Visigothic period. The settlement had a strategic location and the river Vinalopó, which made it easy to defend. After that, by the 5th century BC, the settlement developed into the Iberian city of Heliké, which eventually was invaded by the Carthaginians. The famous Iberian sculpture, the Dama d’Elx, is the best example of the art of this period. At present, you can see it if you visit the Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum.

Then the Romans invaded the Iberian Peninsula, and the city was granted the title of Colonia Julia Ilice Augusta (that’s the reason why the inhabitants of Elche are named ‘Ilicitanos’), a high status that just had the cities of Ilice (Elche) and Valentia (Valencia) in what is now the Valencian Region. The city even had the imperial privilege of minting its own currency.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Elche was plunged in a period of destruction up to the appearance of the Moors. Then, in the 13th century the Christian king Jaume I conquered the city, forcing the Muslims and the Jews to live in two humble neighborhoods.

In the middle of the 19th century the espadrille industry acquired a high importance, and it encouraged the growth of the city, not only economically but also culturally. Before that industrial revolution, Elche was a town that lived from the agriculture, but thanks to the creation of lots of new work places, a lot of immigrants came to work to Elche throughout the 20th century. They got a new life and settled down in the city. Nowadays, Elche’s population is about 250000, and it's rising...

Yes! The city exploits the fact that it produces nearly half of Spain’s footwear. There are museums, but you can also visit a real footwear factory, because it’s still a major centre of shoemaking. Some worldwide-known footwear brands were born in Elche, and others manufacture their goods in this area.

It’s really interesting to know the making of a shoe or a boot, from the cut of the leather to the packing. If you want to know more about that issue, next time I can explain it in detail with images. I’ve been working as an eventual in a factory shoe for many holidays, and I’m an expert now!

These days, the problem of the Spain’s footwear industry is the competition from other countries. Their factories sell quality shoes at a price that cannot be competed, due to the cheap labour among others. For that reason, the number of footwear factories has been falling for years. The footwear sector in Spain commits itself to further rise of the quality of the shoes, and to popularize its brands round the world. On the other hand, the construction and other industries have grown quickly, which means new jobs there.

Now, you know more about Elche's industry. Could you tell me how most of people where you live in make a living?

Jonathan, thanks very much for your corrections and explanations. They throw light on points I wasn’t sure of. My Spanish mind is always running!

At that right night… I tried to say that they leave the kids’ presents “ the night of January 5th” .

My answers to your latest homework are:

1.
- A “cabalgata” takes place that evening in every city.
- A “cabalgata” takes place in every city that evening.

2. Everybody wants to be the one who has the best car.

3.
- The period of time just before an important event such as Christmas = the run-up (to Christmas).
- To have a quick look al something = to cast a glance at something
- To say something that is exactly right or appropriate = the correct version

4. Life and sole….it sounds the same as Life and soul. Looking it up on Google, the first result is a page of reflexology, what seems quite suitable to the homophone ‘life and soul’….

5. I’ve written two possibilities to introduce a question that may be a bit too personal or inquisitive:
- I don’t want to pry, but would you mind telling me a single quote you live by?
- I don’t want to be nosy, but could you tell me what your favourite film is?

How time flies!! It’s time to do some jogging to keep fit!

Thanks to everybody for all your comments!! It's nice to know from you!!....Tomorrow I'll answer all of them, and I'll try to include a recipe of a typical spanish dish, as the Paella... but I'm opened to more suggestions!

Best wishes,
Silvia

Hi Silvia. In my opinion, any place with 250 thousand inhabitants is definitely a city. I looked for Elche in google earth and saw there some photos. I have to say that it looks like a very nice place and is evident its arabic cultural heritage. Perhaps after tell us about paella, you can explain us what "tapas" are, and what does it mean the expression "irse de tapas". Bye

Hi Silvia! How are you doing? Well, in answer to your question in my city most of people, just like me, make their living working at factories. However, my city is one of the cities which provides all kind of vegetables to São Paulo state, so there are also a large number of people(especially families) who are dedicated to the agricultural business. Anyway, I don´t want to be nosy, but in one of your homework answers, you wrote about one of my favourite subjects: films. So, in the future, could you please tell us about your favourite films? It would be nice to know about it :-). Well, I guess it´s all Silvia. See you tomorrow, Ana Paula.

Hello again Silvia. Just a few words to answer your question. I live in Arica, in the extreme north of Chile, close to Perú. The main economic activities here are fishing (anchovies mainly), agriculture (tomatoes and olives), and tourism (beaches and archeological sites). As you can see there are some common things with the mediterranean Spain. Best regards.

Hello Silvia, It sounds interesting to read about Spanish Shoes and more interesting that you have worked in a shoe factory. It would be great if you could tell us more about it. As for making a living in my country, people take up many professions. Women usually go for teaching, they work as a receptionist in organisations, coordinators, they also work in banks and these days in the profession of accountancy also. for the past few years I have also seen women doing the job of distributing the newspaper, running an open air food stall, sewing and all the work related to handicrafts. As for men, they go into alomst all professions, say for e.g. from brick kilning to construction, they also run shops,in the profession of shoe making, banks and etc. Silvia, I will be looking forward to the recipe of Paella, I know a bit about this dish as I had once seen it's making on the BBC food tv. The interesting part was that the chef was making it on the street in Spain and then when it was done had offered the passers-by to taste. Am I correct that the ingredients can vary? Best wishes, Naheed

Hi Silvia Your today blog is interesting as we got more details information about your city and also about neighbour city (city or town???). While reading your first blog it seems that you are a good traditionalist and not so materialist, which is so good. Murcia, Benidorm and Abdet are the cities close to you and yes to my surprise Granada is just 250 0r 260 kilometers away from your city. I’m I correct? Hm. I living in Dubai and here people engage in range of bossiness and jobs and I think most of people doing jobs with private sector.

Hi Very informative. I like spain histo, because it have more interactions with moslems than other europian countries.

Hi dear Silvia , Oh , what a fantastic Blogers you are ! I really like reading your Blogs . They are perfect ! The ceremony of the three wise man , sound interesting . But I 'm a little confused , dose it take part , now a days . Do you see them on camels , if yes , please put some photo of them . The detail story of Elche city was really helpful . When I 'm going to speak about history , specially in English , it would be a real disaster . As you mentioned about relation between Elche and Alicante , There are the same situation between my city Ardebil and our neighbour provine capital , Tabriz city And the reason of it is that in the past my province was part of our neighbour province and you can gess the remains , innit ? about your question , as my province is placed in a smooth area and it 's not so industrial , I can say the most important job is farming and gardening and they produce any kinds of crops , fruits and vegetables . By the way , I 'm waiting for more photos . So long

Hello, Silvia! How are things? It is well worth telling us about the shoemaking process, if you ask me. In my opinion, it may prove rather educating and interesting. It'd perfect, if you could bulk your story out with some explanatory pictures. As far as making a living in my city is concerned... It is a factory-city. There are six or seven different industrial factories over here and none of them is nearly as exciting as a shoemaking factory, let alone a chocolate one. Naturally, a standard city infrastructure is also presented and it provides people with jobs that are typical for cities. There is also a great number of smaller privatly-owned businesses. But they are businessy businesses, no craftsmanship involved, if you know what I mean. If you live in my city, then there is a great chance that you work at one of the factories and I am no exception. Unfortunately. However, I secretly nourish a dream of becoming a teacher one day :) Sincerely, Ana

¡Hola!¿Qué tal? Although Epiphany is a public holiday over here as well, we usually get presents on X-mas. If Santa Claus stops by our house, we generally unwrap them on X-mas’s morning. Veneto(my region) is one the most industrialised region of Italy. Our main sectors are: the metal-engineering, the clothing, and the woodworking. I cannot wait to read your recipe because I really like Paella. Good day!

Hi Silvia, Do you like jogging? also I !!! Every day I go to gym, instead at the weekend, I go to run out, in the open air...I run for about 12 miles! About Paella...ehm! I know it by name but....What is the paella? Thank you Mariangela

Hi Silvia, it's funny that we have the same native language and we are communicating in another one. I see that you studied a lot about Elche's history! Interesting. About my city, Montevideo, it has a little more than 1 million people, so there is not one only kind of work that is most important than the others. Perhaps it would be commerce and services, banks, credit cards, shopping centres and little shops, as grocerys, etc. We have also industries that were very important in the past, nowadays they declined. Many people are public workers, too many I think. They work for the different Ministers, the electric company, telephones, etc. We receive many tourist, that is another way of working. That is all for today. Regards

Hi, Silvia. Thanks again to your new entry! Today you give us a vivid description of Elche’ history and culture. This makes me know more about your country and your people. I am really interested in the manufacturing process of how shoes come into being. You see, without shoes, we can not even take one step forward. Here in my city, people do different kinds of jobs to earn a living. But as far as I know, in the past, it is famous for dry goods, especially beddings. Till now, there remain many family industries which manufacture beddings.

Hi Silvia, Difficult to answer to your question. I do not know very clearly which are the differences between a city and a town. Does it depends on the number of inhabitants? On the nature of its resources ? on the degree of modernisation ? What about a big town or small city ? Read you soon again ! Antonio

Hi Silvia, I have searched photos of Elche via internet. It is a beautiful city where is suitable for living of people. I live in Taipei where is the biggest city in Taiwan. The population is over 2.6 millions in Taipei. The capital's Taipei 101 is the tallest building in the world. At the top of building, you can see whole scence of Taipei. Maybe you can see the building via internet.

Dear Silvia, Historical background of Elche is very interesting. It is pleasure to know that your home city is capable of producing 50% of footwear of your country. It will be very nice of you, if you post brand name of widely recognized manufacturing company. It is certain that there us up and downs in business cycle and only which can fulfill customer desire in maximum level. Cut of job in footwear industries are compensated by growing in construction and other industries may be a great relief for local inhabitants and new ray of hope for better future. Good bye!

Hello Silvia, you are interested in which way most of the people earn their money in my area: I live in a little village but in a distance of 15 kilometres there are a great chemical industrie where a lot of people are employed. We have also a great paperindustrie and a carindustrie( Ford). My husband and me, we both are employed in the social field.A lot of people work in the service industries sector. Nordrheinwestfalen, this is the federal state we live, have more inhabitants than the Netherlands, so you can imagine, that here are different possibilies of employment. I'm looking forward to the recipe ... Bye, bye

Hello Silvia, In my city Hazaribagh which is in the boundary line of city and town as it is not so much developed but most of the consumable things we get. The people make a living by involving in a diverse form of work like coolie, shopkeepers, businessman, teachers, government jobs. People are happy and thats above all. I also visited Vrindawan, which a birth place of Lord Krsna where people are doing all types of job and most of them are devotees. Their homes are like temple. Liked so much such a holy visit to Vrindawan.

Hi Silvia! It´s been very nice getting to know so much about you and your city...or town? The problem here is that we usually translate city as "ciudad" and town as "pueblo" and in Spanish a "city" is a big population whearas a "Town" is rather small and I don't know if it is the same in Spain, but here "pueblo" is often used with a derogative connotation. If we want it to sound nice we say "pueblito" which means something like "little town" and it would be "village" in English. Is that clear? Well, if you want to know more about this, please don't ask me. Accoding to what I´ve seen, Elche is definetly a city and La Paloma is a small town or a village. In Uruguay for a "pueblo" to become a "ciudad" has to have all the basic public services, like bank, post office, school, city hall, church, hospital, etc. it has nothing to do with the number of inhabitants. I´m looking forward to your next blog.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
