My home town

The heading today reminds me of Tom Jones and his green, green grass of home.

My green grass of home is Oulu. The city of Oulu was founded about 400 years ago by the King of Sweden. Later on this week, as I will write more about our history, and then you will become aware why the Swedish King was the founder of Oulu.

As this is a blog, and everything is in digital disorder, I try to have some sort of manuscript in my writings. I hope this will help you to read my blogs. It is easy to quote American David Weinberger here: “Everything is miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder” (the title of his new book 5/2007). No, I have not yet read the book, and I am not trying to advertize it. The reason why I talk about it, is that this blogging participation is a very good example of “digital disorder.” People want to participate, not just read!

And you guys participate. Thank you again for your fantastic response. Rachel I am sorry, that I haven´t had a change to answer to all or your questions, I have been so busy trying to entertain (in spite of fearing that I am not able to keep you interested). Kirsti thank you for your information about Finnish related languages, the piece of information was new to me. It was great to exchange words with all of you about music, composers, army and food. Noora; name of Leila is not very uncommon here in Finland. hyoahil from Lincolnshire thank you: I was near your neighborhood last June while visiting Scotland.

Being so far to North it is often thought, that polar bears walk on our streets. This is not a reality; I have never seen a polar bear in Finland. But our winters are pitch-dark and harsh, and our climate dictates our lives a great deal. We need winter tires in our cars, our houses are well insulated and house windows need triple glassing just to mention a few examples how the climate has to be considered at all times. The changes in the temperatures between the winter and summer can be over 60 degrees Celsius, so anyone can imagine the difficulties that this brings.

The greatest hero in Finland is Santa Claus and he lives in Finnish Lapland. As I mentioned we have no polar bears, in fact Finland is a highly industrialized country. You may know Finland because of our famous Formula drivers, such as Keke Rosberg, Mika Häkkinen or Kimi Räikkönen. Or maybe you know Nokia mobile phones?

My home town Oulu is very proud of the high technology achievements that Finns have made with mobile communications. Nokia Plc has always been very tightly connected with Oulu.

Do you use mobile phone? Your phone is maybe Nokia, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, LG, Samsung or something totally different? Or maybe you don´t use a cellular phone at all?

The photo from yesterday was really a tree covered with snow. Katri had taken the picture by the ski slopes in Lapland. This kind of phenomena is rather common during the winter; wet snow gets stuck on tree brunches and freezes… more snow and wind together harden the tree even more. The picture tonight is of me and my husband in a gala mood.

Talk to you again!

Hello, Leila! You don't have to worry about becoming boring. You are an interesting entertainer, in fact, your country and the way of living will provide enough material for you to blog for yet another month, if only the BBC crew let you. My cellphone really is Nokia. I know people who are hooked on sending SMS messages, but I am not one of them. I use it when an ordinary phone is not available. Which gala occasion was it when this pictue was taken? How sweet of you two to share that moment with the rest of us global village. Very important PS for Naheed, with the permission from Leila, I am glad you remembered me at all and a big wave hello back to you Naheed.

Hi Leila, I couldn’t find time enough to reply to your previous blog. Some weekdays have less free hours and it was impossible for me to read (not to skim) both blogs, yours and Rachel’s so I will skip one step, but I will try to answer to your questions. I assume your question about composers is/was related more or less to classical music. Quickly thinking I only can come across two composers : Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla. They are quite Spanish guitar oriented. Concerning food I like all food that is prepared with dedication even if it is simple. I like tasting traditional and local food when I am visiting a country. By the way I liked very much a kind of reindeer stew called something like “Poron Karystus” I ate at the end of a two days hike in the “Lemmen Joki”, some years ago. I like too the taste of oriental food, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, … I am really impressed by the way you develop your articles giving such interesting information about your country to us. Yes, I have a mobile phone but I think I do not exaggerate using it. Since June 2006 I have made calls for 2h28min and received calls for 5h58min. Is it a reasonable duration for sixteen months ? Well I have to stop here. Read you soon.

Hi, Leila. As I left Finland in the 70's I didn't follow much of what happened in Finland. For me Nokia meant paper and rubber boots (or wellingtons). So I didn't understand what mobiles had to do with the brand. Later on I got a book describing the fabulous adventure of the company and the success of a little research team that wasn't really supported by the managers.

Hello Leila! Oh, your picture in a gala mood is beautiful :-). Did you take this picture on a Christmas Eve? One year ago my friends obligated me to buy a mobile phone, because they couldn´t find me when I was not at home. I have a simple LG cell phone, but between you and me, most of the time I forget to turn it on, which made my friends really made with me, haha :-). Good night Leila, Ana Paula.

That's a good idea for people who need to learn english. I'm interested to talk and know the other countries of the world.

Hello Leila. Brrrr. I started to shiver reading your last post. I prefer by far the dry and warm land where I live. You are right. I have a Nokia, and my wife has one too. But my two sons have an Sony Ericsson each one. Warmly greetings for you.

dear Leila ,firstly ,your husband is very handsome :) . and secondly ,my last phone was a Nokia one. but I lost it several months ago.:(

Thank you for the beautiful dreams about finland...I want to visit SANTA's place. I enjoyed this reading. Expecting more from you.

I hope you are keeping well Leila. You have a wonderful smile and you two look beautiful. After seeing this lovely photo, it would be great if would like to share with us all about how did you both meet and felt that you are made for each other. As for mobile phone, yes, I do own a mobile and it's Samsung. This mobile is dear to my heart as I had baught it from the money I had earned from tution. Naheed

Dear Leila! You entertain us in such a high brow and spectacular way.You don´t need being affraid about this. When I prepare my comments I spend the whole evening kneeling on the floor with dictionaries and other materials around me in order to complete my sentences. I waited until you mention Mika Häkkinen a big player, admirable man and fair-play gentleman. Your husband has made the impression yet. This time the impresive photo reminded me immediately of the french painter Pierre Bonard (one of my favourite) and one of his latest self-portrait. And you are the same inspirative and wonderful woman like his Marthe was! Happy life to you all!

Hi Leila Congratulation, You have a handsome smily husband. How is it your relationship? Have you ever had serious quarrels?

Hi,Leila I like your outfit and you look great in black.my husband's mobile phone is Nokia and mine is Siemens.I hardly us it as I am a full time mum.But my son likes to play games with it.My son is a huge fan of Fomual1 and likes Kimi Raikkonen so much.Have a good day!

Dear Leila, I have decided to take the plunge and add my own comment to your post. I agree that participating is more fun than just reading. I am sure that being a blogger is even better fun. I am itching to try my own self in this capacity. If only... ;) Ok, back to the subject at hand. I wanted to ask you about an expression you have used in you post. Is «green grass» a sort of Finish expression by which a dear place is meant? This has been my first question. It has been eye-opening to have learnt that Nokia mobile phones were created by the Finns, to say nothing about the fact that they are produced in your home town. So you have been to Scotland. I will rephrase the famous quote: to see Scotland and die. It is such a beautiful and romantic place. I travelled by EasyJet to Inverness, then drove down to Loch Ness, up to Ullapool, to the Isle of Sky (Portree), to the Western Isles (the Isle of Harris, the Isle of North Uist), Fort William, Ben Nevis, Edinburgh. That's just the bare bones to give you an image of my trip. Hope it is not too cold up in Finland. Ana

(Sorry I think I posted this on the wrong day so I post it again) Hi Leila again ! Probably you were going to speak about it but just in case …. (I could probably find it too by myself, but asking to you can be read by our community members) … Do you happen to know why the “tango” is so appreciated in Finland ? Antonio

Hello Leila, I m Mariangela, I come from Padova,Italy, near Venice. Do you know? I like so much Finland....I hope soon to come visit Finland !!! Can I yet write you? Bye for now Mariangela

Dear Leila Sorry for not sending my comment yesterday...but I had some troubles with my internet connection I'm crossing my fingers to be able to send this one today... I can't imagine myself living in such a cold place as Finland. I hate winter because I'm very much sensitive to cold weather...Imagine that Salta is situated near the tropic of Capricorn! I've never been in the snow in my life! As regards technology...I do have a Nokia cellphone and I love it because it's so easy to use!! The name of the Formula One players that you mention are very familiar to me because my husband watches all kind of sports!...The picture of you and your husband is beautiful! Best Regards from Argentina!!

Hi Leila, I couldn¡t connect for a couple of days and now I see that you wrote a lot of interesting things. It is difficult for me to imagine so low temperatures in your winter. Climate is changing all over the world. Have you notice that there? In Uruguay we must have now the spring time, but the weather is still like winter, with rainy days and low temperature. Finnish people who live in Uruguay and work in Botnia plant say that they like very much the place, (Fray Bentos city). Today the first ship will be delivering cellulose from that plant. About food, my favourite dishes are pasta, as I have a good part of italian blood. We also eat a lot of meat. I leave you for today. Good photos as usual

It's me again. Yes, I have a Nokia celphone. It is the most simple model. I do not use it a lot, but it is useful to send messages and to be in contact with the family. As I am writing this you probably are sleeping, you will read it tomorrow, here in Uruguay we are with the summer time, and it is 10 pm now. Bye

Dear Leila! I am going to repeate my yesterday comment here again, it didn´t appeared till afternoon, neither others, so I was perplexed what to do. You entertain us in a high brow and spectacular way. You don´t need being afraid in this way. I waited until you mention Mika Häkkinen a big player, admirable man and fair play gentleman. Your husband has made yet the impression. This time the photo reminded me immediately of the french painter Pierre Bonard (one of my favourite, colours are what I like the most) and of one of his latest self-portrait. You are the same wonderful and inspirative woman as his Marthe was. I am really really happy you has become the blogger of this month

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
