English Education

Hello everyone! It's a furnace too here in Tokyo. This weather makes me SO lazy, Sigh.... Now I decided to use my loaf and I am writing a blog in English! haha :P

I would like to write about English Education in Japan. Jill asked me if I have learnt English for 10 years -- Yes, I started(*) learning it when I was 12 years and had just entered the Junior High School. In Japan, English is mandatory for Junior high school and high school. Usually we study for the entrance examinations of high school and university. Because these exams are paper tests, we learn much of grammar, reading and writing skills, not as much conversation and listening skills.

Answering the question from Ernesto, we first studied Japanese before English. We practise so many 'kanji' characters and about three thousands of Kanji characters will be taught by the end of university education.Though I learnt alphabet in elementary school. It is like Ping Ying in Chinese - This only shows how to pronounce words for foreigners. Does it make sense?

In university, English is not mandatory for students but I took 2 classes. In the 3rd year, I attended the discussion session with Korean students and met people who can speak English as a 2nd language. I was surprised to see the Korean and Japanese students who were in same age, very motivated and socialized. After that, I started learning conversation skills as well :D Also, I am very happy that I still keep in touch with some frineds there! It really is fun!!:)

I am very impressed to the comment from Yosuke san, who is the teacher in Junior high. I still remember the teacher who first taught me Enligsh! He was very nice and influenced me so much. Now I do not really need to speak English in my daily life. Usually I check some English websites, listen to English songs, sing them in Karaoke(:P), and writing Emails to my friends.

I wrote so much! Last thing, I would like to ask readers. How do you use BBC website to learn English? Shall we share the ideas? It would help us learn more about your way of learning and exploring this website! I usually check some articles, especially about Japan, and see how they cover us and how we look from foreign countries. Also I like the episode of 'flatmates' from learning English websites. This always teachs me many expressions.
Please let me know of your ideas!

Best regards,
Yumi x

Dear Amy, could you please teach me the difference of 'begin' and 'start'? I looked up the dictionary but they seem to have the same meanings. I would like to ask if these words have the formal or informal meanings. Thank you so much for your kindness in advance.

Dear Sandra, you asked us what 'san' is. We use 'san' in formal or business scenes when we call someone. It works like 'Mr/Ms', but we use 'san' regardless of sex. I am sure you will be called Sandra-san when you come to Japan! :)

These days Korean food is very popular in Japan too! Doesn't it look yummy? Jen, I hope this motivates you to travel in Korea:)

This was the HangGang river at night with friends! loads of fun!!!

Hello Yumi.Your English is perfect and Your messages are very lucid. The readers coud easily get what you want to convey. I really enjoy your blogs. Concerning names there are some which are religious ones. For example my name is after our prophet MOHAMED. Do you have any religious names in Japan? Would you give me examples? Thanks.

Dear Amy as my personal's suggestion,i think the "start"is is much more strong than "begin" on trending to movement's level.maybe everyone know equipment spuring of vehicle 'engine is "start",at this point,"begin"will to show the efficient

How have have you been ? Yumiko.. Normally I have learnt English for around 12 years in elementary school to university as well. However learning English in every day life is begun by heart when my teachers and my father encourage me to learn english and point out load of advantages in learning English especially after graduating. It seem to be essential parts in my life when I will apply for a job. I never know it is useful ,does it ? Because now I am not graduating from the university and one year I will recently graduate . Thus I set the goal and my dream in order to get a good job no matter the futher will be. Anyway in my routine I quite have not much time to practice. So I will download MP3 from other sites like BBC, VOA etc considering how listening skill will be better. At the same time I practice writing to share some point of views in many aspects in BBC blog and sent an e-mail from time to time to friends. Unfortunately speaking English does not play the major role in my daily life. So I speak and copy accent from the MP3 while I do assignment from time to time. At least 3 hours I take time for improving English. Interistingly I put skill English all together and do it every day. On ocassion I fail and blur with many texts but I try. If I get bored learning English I will stop and return again in a eager mood. Glade to talk with you. Better luck next time.

Hello Yumi, hello everybody.I've been reading this blog for quite a while now, and I enjoy it a lot. That's why I made up my mind to send you this mail. BBC learning English is one of the sites I like the most on the net. At the beginning I didn't read much the student's blog, feared there would be too much mistakes. But now I'm interested in both of them. They are always full of ideas, relate interesting events, experiences or journeys, sometimes with a great sense of humour. In short, I would recommend them to everyone who wants to improve his English level. But now I'm going to tell you a little story. A few years ago, I spent my holidays in a foreign country and saw a nice little castle which I wanted to visit. I went to the ticket office and asked, in the foreign language, an entrance ticket. What a disappointment when I heard the answer in my own mother tongue! I didn't think of having such a bad accent. And here comes the great quiz of the summer! By reading me, can you guess which is my mother tongue and where I betrayed myself? First one to guess wins my congratulations. Goodbye everybody and have a nice day. PS Yumi you're doing a great job, thank you for your nice photos.

I am a new comer, the 2nd day in bbc! I want to say that your English is amazing. It is very great! In your 1st paragraph, you use "haha" to express your happyness. have you learnt Chinese before? we use "haha" since it is Ping Ying for "哈哈" which means laugh loudly. am i right?

Hello Yumi! Yummy! The Korean food looks delicious :-). I can tell you that BBC LE is helping me a lot to brush up my English. Actually I explore all the site, and it´s very hard to say what I like most here. Anyway, it´s really worth to take a look in all the site sections, because there´s always something new to learn :-). Well Yumy, besides sing English songs at Karaoke(with a voice as powerful as Celine Dion voice, I suppose ;-) ), could you tell us if you use any other ways to improve your English? Best wishes, Ana Paula.

Dear Yumi, One thing is sure that nobody is perfect in language. It is applicable to mother tongue also. Language learning is continuous practice things. If you use it continue, it will improve gradually. Teachers play key role in learning other language. If teacher is good in language teaching then you can learn grammar and pronunciation very well. If you are misguided in the beginning of language learning, it will take hard effort and long period to learn language. In BBC website, you can get reading and listening and grammar materials to practice. Most important things in language learning is listening, speaking reading and writing. In BBC website, we can practice listening in most of its site. In flatmates, we can hear dialogue and check narration, practise language point and check understanding with quizzes. I will write about other programme next time.

Hi Yumi. I also like to read the news and know what is happening in the World. I also like to read 'Have your Say' to see how native speakers express their opinions. Good wishes and good night.

hi Yumi, I also find BBC website meaningful for all English learners, like you. I usually read news and listen to the brief news on BBC, especially the web for learning English which explains new words and have tapescript, helping me know how I listen. I'm lazy to write, but via this blog, I think i will change my habit. Your way of learning is also interesting and I will follow it. Best wishes

hi my name is ramin and i am from iran. yesterday i read a comment in newspaper about the population of tokyo near to thirty six milon people . that is so interesting for me . i want to ask you about the realistic of this comment and how people live in this space? the population in tehran is near to 13 milion people an we have a lot of problem like air polotion, tribble traffic jam , and the biggest problem for people in tehran is the buying or renting the house or flat. during last year the price for both of them have increased near hundred persent

Hi, Yumi! I saw your blog everyday, and they are great. Answer your question: I usually saw blogs and quiz in BBC, in order to know how to distinct and use words. Sometimes, I will listen to the news for practicing the listening skills. They are very helpful. Hope to see yours! Best wishes, jing

hi! How has it been so far? It was very interesting to find out more about how English is taught in Japan. I wish our schools focused more on teaching English. As you might know, Tajiksitan is one the former USSR state and that's why Russian is also very popular in here. It's considered to be our 2nd native language. The interesting thing about it is that Russian and our mother tongue - Tajik language are not relatives at all. they are from different branches of languages. Anwering your question about how I use BBC to improve my English, i read and translate articles and try to follow student blog for new vocabulary. I am very intereested in politics and economics and try to learn more about what's happening all over the world and I trust BBC a lot. cheers.

Hello, Yumiko! I added 'Learning English' page to my Favourites and every time I open it, I can see what is new and what is old there. Yesterday evening I did 'Crossword Computers' and while doing it, I came across so many new words, because every word in the crossword had a link to the page on which a word is explained. Not only did I learn new words, but I also found my way through the jungle of complicated internet and computer related expressions so that now I am able to understand and use my computer better. I guess I have received some practical help with my computer. I only pray to God it sticks in my mind longer than a couple of weeks. I see that you had a very impressive HangGang river company. You must have had good time there. I will be reading you soon.

The new technology dose not sadly help all of us. Being responsible to assure a correct education is absolutely not easy for some parents who are unfortunately uneducated so they can not help and educate children. Thank you for your participation if you can give us your opinion it may help some of us Akchar
