What motivates me and you to learn English?

Good evening again,

It is finally weekend here! How are you doing? I am good and appreciate all the kind comments, which encourages me to blog here. THANKS!!

I would like to talk about my motivation to learn English...
First of all, my experience of exchange study in Singapore has motivated myself for English. It was already 2 years ago when I was there. When I applied to the program, I had just finished the junior of my university and was very interested in being a student in a different country. I actually had two reasons - *my real intention and stated reason: I wanted to have the experience of living abroad and studied Southeast Asian studies. I was really worried before the exchange, because most of my friends would start working at that time, but I would not.

However, I am confident that the life there for a year deserved me spending time. All the things I experienced were new to me, and I got chances to travel in that area. One more thing, I got friends from many countries, which was beyond my expectations. It was such a nice experience for me and I wish I could get the chance like this someday! I would like to say this is my first motivation.

At the same time, I had so many difficulties with communicating people. I had never used English in a daily life so I could not speak well! Thanks to friends and Singapore, they were very open for foreigners. And sometimes I spoke Japanese with friends and shared complaints, enjoyment, and thoughts so I was fine:)

Do you have any motivations? It would be great if you kindly post yours!
Good night and sweet dreams for everyone:)

asterisk:
one's real intention and stated reason : We Japanese sometimes say this is our culture - when you talk about serious things, we go for 'appearence' first. Then go fo the real thoughts. Readers, do you agree for this?

Best regards,
Yumi

Hi Yumi! Ooh... one of my big motivations to learn English is the cinema. I do love films( the classics are my favourites) and I´m interesting in films from all over the world. Well here in Sao Paulo there is a international films exhibition every year. In this exhibition some films from China, Japan, Israel, South Korea and Syria don´t have subtitle in Portuguese. So, guess what is the language used in the subtitles? Yes, you´re right, the language is English. So even when I´m not watching an English film, I´m practicing my English reading the subtitles. It sounds very good, doesn´t it? ;-) Besides that, if you have a good knowledge in English, your chances to get a better job are bigger. Hmm... by the way Yumi, do you like films? Do you go often to the cinema? Have a nice weekend. Ana Paula.

Hi Yumi. In my case, english is very useful for my work, but more than this, is evident that english is now by now the universal language (a romantic person could say the same about love, but that is not the point). The main scientific, economic, politic and most fields information appears first in english. If you have to travel anywhere in the world, english is the key to comunicate with other people. Have a nice weekend (and later tell us about it) Bye

Hello Yumi. My real motivation is to see life of ordinary people all over the world. I love reading or communicating with people about their usual life, problems, thoughts... I love reading about the universe. This brings me beautiful feelings! Dear Yumi, Fujiyama is the highest mountain in Japan and the well-known volcano. I would like to know if you can see this Japanese symbol from your home town? Have a nice weekend.

Hello, Yumi-san:)I'm really enjoying reading your entry in this blog. As for me, my current motivation to learn English is a need in my job as a language support staff. However, beyond the job, it is really wonderful thing that one can communicate with more and more people if he/she is able to speak different language from his/her mother tongue, isn't it? By the way, I often face difficult situation when I work as an interpreter for my executive staff because of similar thing that you mentioned in your explanation for asterisk. Since we Japanese have 'Honne' and 'Tatemae', it is very confusing for our foreign counterpart to understand what is our real point. Anyway, keeping good communication is the key to understand each other, I think. I'm looking forward to reading your next entry:) Have a great weekend!!

Hello Yumi, You said, I've never used english in your daily life.I think your writting english is very good. Where do you learn English? At school or on your own?.I've been in the UK for half year and I still finding writting and speaking english difficult. And the biggest problem is uderstand when somebody speak so quikly. This is my first motovation. Undarstand people and talk to them.I wish to go to England one more time , meet my friends and talk to them. All the best

Hello Yumi! It's quite an interesting question. What motivates me most is the BBC learning English website. The regular visitors to this site are mostly the learners of English. They are enthusiastic and want to learn the language as much as they can and they show improvement day by day.Secondly, I get motivation from my 13 year old sister-I have formed a very small learning English circle with my 3 sisters-I notice that she is learning the language faster than us.This makes me happy that she will be better than me when gets my age,I hope so. Bye for now,Naheed x

Iìm used to wake up at 7.00 am but I also take the trian and the car to go m wok that is alittle bit out of the town since it is a pharmacutical company. Hoping to hear you very soon. Bye, Italia

Hi Yumi,, How are you?? "What motivates me and you to learn English?" very interesting and attractive title! talking about myself, the most important reason to learn English is to communicate with people all around the world, to share ideas and exchange experiences. This will improve my character more and mor.So, it opens a new horizon in my life. A second reason that encourages me to learn English is that it is a very easy language(comparing it with Arabic).Dear Yumi, could you please tell us about " social relations in Japan" ?? Thank you very much...

My motivation to learn English is my friends from different counries. When I went to the States for a month to study English, it was not very clear why I studied it. During staying there, I made one of the bestfriends from Taiwan and realized how wonderful English was. I always remember and motivate my self to learn English even when learning is likely to be boring. Besides that, I would like to work abroad as well as you.

hi my all friend i want to improve my coomunication spoken english power.bez i know it is very essential now a day.in this year i had completed my graduation.now i keep my step in post graduate.and also i want to increas my concentration power.so please help me.

i think like to you. i am pilot but the first reason to learn english always have being for know and communicate well around the world with interesting peoples.

i am learner of english. I want to change my job these days and i find my english is too poor to find a nice job. So these days i am full of passion to study english. I came here and found the bolgs.I am so interested in these that i am writing down here. Though at the same time, i have to use the dictionary to describe myself, i will try my best to join you.

I'm studing in Austrlia, however my first language is not english, when I first time came to austrlia, I couldn't talk to people neither, my english was very bad, I was pretty shy, I stayed with my Austrlian friends everyday, but I didn't talk with them. First time I started to talk with people it was after I arrived Austrlia two mouthes..... I like to talk with my friends in english now, I think my motivation is enviroment---I have to talk with peole in english. In my culture when you talk about serious things, we go for 'appearence' first as well, but I think when you are talking with a people like me,I just want to know your real thoughts, not the 'appearence' ... anyway nice to see you in this blog.

Hi Yumi-san, What motivates me to learn English is quite difficult question. As you know, we don’t need to speak English in our life in Japan, so I think it’s very difficult that we keep mind to learning English. Actually, I didn’t like to study English in my schooldays, and I am still annoyed with the meaning of learning English in Japan. If so, why I learn it? I think it’s not a study for me but a kind of hobby. I read a favorite book, watch a firm, listen to radio or music, in English as same as Japanese one. Of course, I can’t understand everything of that, but it makes me fun and excited feeling. Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading your next entry and question. By the way, I could understand what one's-real-intention-and-stated-reason means. But I couldn’t understand what your real intention and stated reason is.

Hi Yumiko, and thanks for you blogging here. I started learning English academically some 7 years ago when I was about 17 years old. I had experienced English before which was my first ever motivation when I had to talk to my cousine who had been living in Canada and couldn't speak my language (Farsi). Then I thought I would be better off taking English more serious which is now spoken by many people around the world, so I could be in touch with different people from a wide range of cultures and nationalities. Now I'm going further in the language to be able to be a translator in the near future.

Hi Yumi! Your question is very interesting. There are two incentives that inspire me to learn English. First, I like this language very much. Also thanks to my teacher in high school. I was very absorbed by her lesson and her style influenced on my thoughts and interest so much. I started to study harder and developed my confidence through her lessons. Due to that, I decided to pursue this language and that's why I applied to Englsih as my major. So, the second reason that motivates me is that I study Englsih for my future career. I'd like to become an interpreter or I hope to use English in my work, whatever it may be. English is so popular that many companies require the employees to have good command of English. Also, at the same time I am studying Japanese. Hope that one day I can master both languages. I think learning another language involves learning about the culture of that country. Thus I would visit your blog and read the things you write about your country! Have a good day and see you :)

Hi, Yumi. I live in Japan. My motivation to learn English is my job. My job is a language teacher at junior high school. I teach English to students aged from 13 to 15. It is really fun. I want to be a good English speaker who inspires students to speak English and like it. So I need more training. I need chances to communicate in English. How do you practice your English? Do you have any chnces to use English now?

Hi Yumi !in effect it's simple if I don't learn english , never I'll can to speak in the world and be able to write you.Sorry for the mistakes but I read your blog for impoved me I read I read....Bye

Yumi! In my case my one of my big motivations to learn English is to get a better job and comunicate with people all around the world. =p =) Interesting tittle! Have a great week!

Hi Yumi! I have been learning English since I went to school. I like this subject very much and I can't understand people who don't want to learn this useful language. What is my motivation to learn? Well, I have always been dreaming about communicating with poeple from over the world. Moreover the ability of speaking English will help me to get a good job in the future. I'm just fifteen but I know that I have no future without English. In addiction I would like to understand every single English song and know what foregin people talk about. Was I clear enough? All the best. Karolcia

Hello Yumi!! To tell you the truth, I didn´t have any motivation when I first started studying English. I was 8 then and I was told it was important for me to learn the language. As the years went by, I became aware of its importance. From then on, my motivation was to be able to use the language in order to communicate with people from other countries. Eventually, I became an English teacher and nowadays the language is part of my life.

i want to learning confidence i know english but not better as i want if u direct the good ways of learning it will be ok i can write but i cant talk good

Hi Yumi, I do believe that English is a lingua franca, doesn't matter if we are talking about business, culture, education, politics or pleasure. We need it. If it was not english we wouldn't be able to communicate because I don't speak a word of Japanese. All the best,

i'm a graduate of a degree courses but my english is poor for me it is hard to speak english..but i'm trying to learn..i'practice atleast one sentence a day and reading english like story or news for me this is the way to grow up my my english language..thanks good day
