Superstition
Hello, Everybody!
I hope you are all keeping well. This is going to be an interesting discussion on superstition because there are so many things that people consider good or bad. The good ones are always welcomed but unfortunately the bad ones are always considered as ‘an ugly duckling’. I am sure everyone will come up with some interesting superstitions.
I am not superstitious; however, I like saying ‘keeping fingers crossed’. When I was a child I had to believe in some of the things told by my elders, though my small mind never accepted them at all. When I was quite younger, my grandmothers both from my mother and father’s side used to advise us that if someone is leaving home never to ask where s/he is going. Because this brings bad luck and the person leaving should sit for a while. There’s another superstition about a black cat. If a black cat crosses someone’s path, the person should change the path to save himself from something happening wrong to him. Jokingly, in my view if a black cat crosses your path, you should not change your path. Instead you should make the cat change its path.
There are some more interesting superstitions to share with you all. I will begin with the bad ones first. It is considered to be bad luck if the milk spills. Seeing of an owl is said to bring the news of death. Breaking of mirror is a sign of bad luck. A pregnant woman should not do any work with needle, scissors and a knife when it’s solar or lunar eclipse. It is believed that the baby is born with some abnormalities. I have also heard another one of such kind that an expectant mother should not go out of home in solar or lunar eclipse. Babies born with teeth are not considered lucky for the family. However, medical science has an answer to this one that why are babies born with teeth?
Some good luck superstitions are: crowing of a crow at a window is the sign of guests. If a honey bee builds a comb outside a house, it is said that a person buys a new home. Putting a dress on inside out. I can only think of these
Answers to your questions Jo:
1) A horseshoe - lucky
2) Oepning an umbrella whilst indoors - unlucky
3) Anew pair of shoes on the table - unlucky
4) A black cat crossing your path - unlucky
5) Breaking a mirror - nlucky
Good luck to all

Hi Naheed!! It´s just a brief comment to say that I really enjoy reading your blog today. Hmmm... some of the surpertitions that you told us, I´ve never heard before. They are very interesting indeed. Good luck for you, too! :-) Ana Paula.
Hi, Naheed. I am not superstitious, but here in Brazil depends on the region you live, have a lots of superstitions too. And reading your new post, I cant tell you that we have global and local superstitions. For instance, I think everbody in the world know about " A black cat crossing your path" it´s a global superstitions. I know one that my Grandmother tell me a lot about one superstitions " With you see a butterfly flying in your house, somebody in your family could die" it´s seem like a advice but I don´t belive that, I think it´s a local superstitions. Anyway........reading your blog help me a lot. And about the foods it´s so delicious isn´t?? kisses.
Hi, Naheed. Your comment reminded me about a superstition of an expectant mother and about teeth. If she cleans a lavvie, she'll have a pretty baby. When my upper milk tooth had fallen out, I buried it in front of my house with hoping for having a good upper permanent tooth and a lower tooth had fallen out, I throw it up at a roof of my house with hoping for having a good lower permanent tooth. See you.
Hi Naheed !!! I am superstitious as my clan are also except my father. I don't know why but its superstition feel to play the major interfering role in the most of Thai clans. Partly because it is dealing with religious. And partly because it is believe's individual. Anyway the effects of superstition are quite right and likely to good way. For instance ,firstly when my girl friend and I have a meal together, suddenly the spoons are tap together. That means in the next days somebody will meet you by chance or pay attention to meet you. Secondly if the books drop into the ground ahead of taking examination. It is implied that you may fail in that test. Bye for now.
Hello Naheed! How are you today?I'm fine. I aren't supersticious too, but there are some tips which I follow more for custom than for superstition. For instance, If I spill salt in the table I will drop salt over my shoulders to keep off the evil spirits and I never walk beneath a ladder. Keep on with your fantastic blog! :)
Hello Naheed, it's nice to read your entry again. My goodness, you sure are an expert on superstitions, aren't you? As far as I'm concerned I'm not very superstitious either. But I guess hearing people say about these things may have some influence on us, no matter how sceptical we are. I'd like to know what the explanation to the babies being born with teeth is. Don't forget to tell us later. I found this one a very cruel superstition, to put such a terrible burden on a baby's back. Thank you Naheed for your nice work on the blog. Bye for now.
Hi Naheed :-) Good for you, Naheed: I agree with you that if a cat is trying to cross your path, it's the best to make it change its path and not to change yours. As for me, I don't change my path or make the cat to change it, but your idea is very clever indeed. What I find strange about superstitions is that a lot of them are the same or very similar to each other in a lot of countries, perhaps all over the world.
Hello, Nahhed. I find it amazing how miles and miles of roads, a few continents and oceans may be between us, but, no matter which tiny part of the planet Earth we call our home, we still share the same superstitions. Just like you, when I was a child, I had a friend, Ivana who would advise me about superstitions. And, oh, boy was she mean! I was a naive child who took for granted whatever Ivana told me. Ivana took advantage of my naivety and enjoyed making fool of me. She used to scare me when we heard a little night owl hoot, telling me that someone would die. To wish me luck at school, she would throw, not a glass of water after me but a bucket of water, wetting my jeans and shoes. She would never walk under a ladder. Even today, I avoid walking under any kind of a post bent that way to make the shape of a triangle. Looking back, remembering, now I think she wasn't all that bad. When she would see a chimney sweeper she said that if you grab a button on your clothes, and wished something that wish would come true. Naheed, I am so sad because we only have three more days together.

really superstition are written in every civilitians they result from religion
Hi Naheed, good to know 'lucky' superstitions, and not so good to know 'unlucky' ones... :-). I will share with you something, it so happened that, whenever I name my presentation file starting with FINAL (like FINAL-01.ppt, FINAL-02.ppt), I experienced that, presentations goes well without trouble..and now I got so superstitious, all my files, are named like this...(crazy na..!!) but I don't dare to change it and take a risk...i think somehow this way, these superstitions are developed and passed on to generations...! I can't say I am only weird soul on this earth, if you see few of the famous bollywood directors, they keep their movie names same, like one director's movie names, all starts with word "Kabhi"...he doesn't change it only fearing movie will be flopped if he does. "Why-to-take-risk" attitude gives more space for superstitions... What do you say?? Cheers, Manas
Hi honey ! It was really interesting and well ya know Iranian people are so superstitious they believe in lots of absurd superstions and they try to obey whatever others or its better to say whatever elders say;anyway I`m glad that I'm not a superstitous girl !! I laugh at them most of tha time!!!
Hi Naheed .I`m not agree with you,I think some superstitions are people`s beliefs .but I know some of them are really foolish.
