Proverbs and Sayings.
Hi Alex, and hi my friends.
How are you today? Are you ready for the weekend? I hope so.
Do you have any proverb or saying that you like most? Is there anyone that your wise grandmother always told you and you kept in your mind? I have one.
When I was a child and went to visit my grandparents, after I had lunch my grandma used to give me an apple as a dessert, and she always said to me: "eat this fruit kid, because you must know that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", and then she stroked my hair and kindly ordered: "go to play! "
Since then, the apple become one of my favourite fruits, besides the apple being a delicious fruit, very rich in fibres, which are very good to reduce high cholesterol levels, when I eat one, I always remember my grandma advice, and the magic moments that we spent together, I close my eyes, and I can clearly hear her pleasant laugh, hmmm... this memories smell and taste like an apple. Therefore I belive that the saying is totally right, because in my case the sensations that eating an apple bring to me, keep any doctor away, it isn´t only due the fruit being good to health, in fact, it´s also due the happy memories that makes me fell confortable and less stressfull, the memories that make me come back to my childhood.
I´d like to say to Eni, from Brazil, that cheese with guava jelly (queijo com goiabada) and cheese with fudge ( queijo com doce de leite), in my city are known by Romeo and Juliet, sorry if I made you feel a little bit confuse.
"Oi" Alex Mosky! You are now learning capoeira and a little bit of Portuguese. This is fantastic! I tried some capoeira classes, however I had to stop, and then I decided to take some Judo classes, which it isn´t related to capoeira, but I enjoyed very much. I hope that you are having a lot of fun.
Have a nice weekend my friends, see you on Monday,
Ana Paula.
PS- Alex I hope that soon, you can be able to describe to us your delightful cheese with fudge experience ( if you really had the courage to go on, I confess that I have my doubts about it), I eager to know what happened. [:-) ]

Hi,Ana,it seems like Alex has enjoyed his weekend now,for i am eager to know how is his cheese and fudge tasted like? Well,"God helps those who help themselves" is my favorite one when i was stumped by difficulties.I like your writing style that sounds like poemtic----this memory smells and tastes like an apple.Have a good weekend!
Hi Ana Paula. Your grandma was really wise. Once my neighbour was telling me she couldn't sleep due to her newborn baby. I told her to put the peels of an apple in a plate near the baby's bed because just the smell was enough to calm him down, what was helpful for her. I like a proverb that my ex-teacher used to say but I'm afraid I can't translate that. Here it is: Don't think that " bife à milanesa " is the same as " bife ali na mesa "! If anyone from Brazil knows how to translate it...please help. He had to repeat that every time we students had made silly mistakes such as I have done in my last comment. I have written "my friend had to loose weight" but the correct is "my friend had to lose weight". Loose is the word to use for his clothes if he really had lost some weight. Ana Paula, I think you have already read the Alex's blog...it's really funny...I can't stop laughing. Ha ha. Bye
Hi, I have been upset about the sad news around the world, so at the moment I ask myself; what is wrong with the world? From my childhood I mostly remember songs. I used to sing the same lullabies to my daughter that my mother sang to me. I still hum it at times when I am driving a car. In English I used sing to my daughter the following: Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily life is but a dream.
Hi Ana Paula, Like music and perfume, sayings also have the power to bring back good memories. And as you said, it is interesting to see how powerful these sayings are in our lives, it is something that passes on from generation to generation in our families. My mum used to have a collection of them, that she inherited from my granny, who inherited from her mom and so forth... I used to repeat most of them mechanically but now that I turned into a more reasoning person I avoid to utter some cause I find they are carried with prejudice!!! But the one that I still say and I like very much is this one... 'Na casa do bom homen quem não trabalha não come". I haven't seen its version in English yet? Well, the literal meaning in English would be "At the good man' home, the ones who do not work do not eat!!! And its morale is that cooperation is crucial in every single society, starting with your family. I love it. What do think of it? Cheerio, Monica PS: Like you I'm also fond of apples on the belief that an apple a day really keeps the doctor away... although I have to be careful here, at home, cause I'm married to a doctor...I´ve been thinking of replacing the apple for pear. I feel it sounds safer...
How is going ? The climate is dramatically changing between too hot and rainy ocassion in couple of many days . For this reason I was rather feeling a bit under weather . As you endeavour to illustrate a few of proverb or saying in the fact that remind me of Thai proverb as many as English proverb . Actually there are rather the same both meaning and situaion when we use in another conversation or even academic writing . The favourite proverb that I write on the next cover diary book: Nothing gained , Nothing venture has a special thing . The meaning is that when you do anything .You must focus on what do you want to do . Making a effort inasmuch as you can do . Interestingly,in general weekend I mostly take my leisure in order to watching T.V. , lauching the Internet .And English chanel three in Thailand usually displays English minutes involving in proverb . Guessing the easy situation compare with Thai proverb and English proverb . Most of children and person ,who would like to know how different it is , are interested in this chanel very much especially me. Good luck to you ...<< Wisarut >>
Hi,Ana Puala I came from a big family and a rural area.when I was a child my brothers and sisters were always up to mischief.Nearly every autumn, the gang of my siblings messed up my neighbors'fields or climbed apple trees and chestnut trees which we were fobidden. whenever we caught my parents grounded us for a few days. But one of my aunt always came to rescue us saying to my parents "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." thank you for your beautiful letter and have a wonderful weekend!hyoshil
hi,i am very adamant child of my family.when i was a kid,i hate to go to school.and my grandma always got me up for send me to school and she used to give me bribe to wake me by showing her love by kissing me and by giving me chocolate.i used to throw tantrums that time.one day,she wasn't came to wake me,i got up myself on the same time, went to grandma and i fought a lot...and said why u didn't wake me up..i am used to it.i need your love,i cann;t live without that kiss and chocolate.it becomes more sweeter when it is given by you.then i promise myself i will wake up in the morning and will always go to grandma for her love.
Hi, Ana Paula. Not a lot of peple know these days that the original proverb in England was 'an onion a day keeps the doctor away'. Could you imagine a child who would have an onion a day? I couldn't. The worst of all is that even now, as an adult man, when I have an apple in front of my eyes I always see an onion. Isn't that terrible? I think it is. That's why apples are not my favourite fruit (not:fruit). I know that apples are juicy and tasty but I can't help not liking them. If you like apples keep having them every day: I'm sure they are good for you. Best wishes.
hi Ana Paula, I read what you explain to Eni, from Brazil, that what you called "fudge" (doce de leite) is actually what is called "caramel" in USA, where I lived for almost 5 years. And "fudge" is completely different. In my opinion both are delicious. I used to buy it in latin food stores. May be Alex could have a second try of Romeo and Juliet, this time with caramel. But, as we commonly say in our country: if you get burnt with hot milk, then seeing a cow you cry - which means if you have a bad experience you don't want to try again. (I aplogise for the translation, any help would be appreciated) nice blog! thank you cheers
I have liked very much your text about your smell memories. Believe it or not, this morning I ate an apple because of you. I was late to one of my courses because I hadn’t heard the alarm clock. So, no time for a normal breakfast just time enough to read your blog. Then I took an apple and sprang into my car. I did not close my eyes because I was driving but mi mind flown after each bite somewhere in Brazil next Sao Paulo. I like the contrast between these two Spanish proverbs : “Al que madruga Dios le ayuda” and “No por mucho madrugar amanece mas temprano” that means “If you get up early God will help you” and “It is not because you get up earlier that the dawn arrives sooner” Have a nice Sunday.
Hi Ana Paula, HOw come you find interesting topics! I love to know about Proverbs and Sayings. On Friday, you wrote on your blog like this; "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", Here, in Türkiye, we say that instead; "The sun keeps the doctor away", both are in the same meaning. it is interesting, isn't it? Do you have any proverbs or sayings that you like most? Have a nice weekend Sevinç
Hi Ana, I have just read your your article which I found interesting. I would say both of us have some similarities since i spent part of my young life with my grandparents in Nigeria.Your grandma's sayings regarding apple and health is a valid and medically proven statement. My grandmum used to tell me and my siblings that ''whoever that is cunning to work, is cunning to his or her own detriment''.Her sayings of which were many has gone a long way in motivating us during our struggles in life both in Nigeria and London. I hope you don't forget the happy memories you spent with your grandmum. Kind Regards, Philbert
