Soap Opera
Hi Alex, and hi my friends.
So, what did you think? Hmm, hmm? Am I right? Of course I am. You certainly feel, that your horizons are broaden now, and sunddely, just like in a moment of revelation, a single and small bite of this delicate dessert could show you how close-minded you were, and even worse! In a moment of regret you remember that you said that your sweet student was having a bad influence on the other students, how wrong you were! Haha! I think this was an unforgettable experience for you Alex, you don´t need to be a corageous man to try cheese with fudge. I hope that you tried the right fudge. Anyway...
I reviewed your explanations about conditionals, and I tried to fix the sentence:
" If she were alive nowadays, she would never dance Axe music."
I´ll be waiting for the right answer.
Well, soap opera is a "national mania". It´s an inexpensive way of leisure which demands of you just to have a TV appliance. In ever single home, market or even at the bakery, where is a TV turned on and it isn´t footbal match day, you can bet that what they are watching is a soap opera. There is a type of spell which glue people in their sofas, and they don´t move and don´t make any noise while they are watching it. People want to have the characters lives, which is always full of luxery, money and journeys around the world, and besides that the sopa operas are set in stunning places, like Northeast of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, etc, and the actors and actresses are dazzling beautiful.
Basically the soap opera story is about the struggle of the good and evil sides, there is always an envy villain trying to become rich through ilegal methods, and he/she develops the most crazy plans to split up the main couple in order to spoil their happiness and destroy his/her opponent. Therefore the soap operas have their social side. Most of them nowadays are trying to bring up some social issues, such as the rise of criminality in the cities, organs transplants, campaigns to find missing children, and so on. The soap operas authors, insert in it characters who are passing through some of this situations, and in this way, they make the population empathise with them, and change their point of view, in order to rise the organ donations, and find missing children ( many children was found when a soap opera author brings up this issue in her story). Moreover I think is a trend among authors, to unite entertainment with social issues, and like this make the society discuss about them.
Are the soap operas a commom entretainment in your country just like is here in Brazil?
So long friends,
Ana Paula.

I don't know if I can be called a fan of Soap Operas, Ana Paula, but I respect who likes it. It can be useful if you are able to segregate the good and bad things. Certainly, you can learn some good things. Without doubt, soap operas are powerful in the field of politics and socio-economic problems when they want to influence people's mind as any media. For this reason, Ana Paula, I highly recommend you to have a critic point of view about everything you watch and read. I always like to see the other side of the issue. For example, I am very shocked about the shooting issue as all the people around the World. I was touched by the suffering of the victims'families and I agree it was the worst of the worst that someone can do BUT I don't agree with the view that doesn't consider him, who had a mental illness, as also a victim of a system that doesn't care of mental illness at all, doesn't fund many researchs in psychiatry and psychology and only does what is better to pharmaceutical industries rather than the population needs. I think it's a tip of the iceberg. I'm looking for a book to understand about this: "The Mark of Shame/ Stigma of Mental Illness and an Agenda for Change". Ah...let's forget about this now because I want to have only good dreams...have you realised ,Ana Paula, that today 19th april was the indian day? Good night!
Hi,Ana,you are so braze(courageous)to criticise our teacher as such;I appreciate your spirit.haha..... The remarks on SOAP OPERA is impressive and farsignted.Well,in my country, soap opera is popular with most of families, especially at 8pm on CCTV1 every night,my family all get together and become couch potatoes silently. It is absolute that soap opera has influented our life now and then. By the way,my favorite one is FRIENDS that i have 10 seasons downloaded in my PC.Now,we have 'WARM'on TV that told storied about family members.Anyway, today i will give myself a movie spree.GOOD LUCK
HI, Ana Paula! Soap operas are quite common in my country and besides there are a lot of Brazilian, Mexican ones. My grandmother likes to see them, she always chooses one and then she is very loyal about following it. I do not like soap operas, consider that it would be waste of my time. However my father who is abroad is convinced that watching soap operas contributes to quicker command of foreign language because of the spoken language, every day vocabulary mostly used in them. Wish you a lovely day and sunny mood! All the best!
Ana Paula! You write blogs enthusiasticaly and very diligently every day! You work in your demanding proffesion hard constantly, read books in English, work on fresh air every day and you never complain! In a short time you have convinced me, as Heleno from Belem commented befor, that Brasilians are superb folks, that just want to be happy! In my country we are used to complain to everything, such a sad habit. You have evidently deserved the privilege blogging with teacher Alex! I am sure that you`ll succeed in your endeavour studiing at university.
Hi Ana Paula! I noticed this pattern in Brazilian soap opera's plot, namely good vs evil, love vs betrayal and so on as You wrote. Although Brazilian soap opera is familiar in my country recently ours native productions have beaten a records of popularity. They are different than Brazilian such as ours countries, cultures and habits are. Our serials describe citizens daily life, reflected it either bigger or smaller degree:) I've never noticed people whos gather together in a public place to watch their favourite shoap opera. Commonly neighbours are visiting each others to drinking either coffee or tea during they are watching soap opera(some cakes as well:) All the best!
Hi Ana Paula Soap opera is good for me provided it's in english. They talk about every day subjects, and often repeat the same sentances few times. So for english learners is a perfect source of gaining fluency to understand spoken english. It is not possible for me to watch it in my native language, it is so boring! greetings to everybody
hello, ana paula. Brazilian soap operas aren't famous in france because we are more influenced by american soap operas, like "the bold and the beautiful" and "days of life".There is just one french soap operas on tv now.We are more used to have a new saga every summer. bye, delphine
actualy, i don't understand about soap opera cos' in my country, this art is not popular. But we have also a kind of art is similar with., that is " Cai Luong". It also tell about social issues, when i was child i liked it very much. And regretly, when the more my country is development the more our cultures, customs is disappered slowly and slowly. However I think that what we should think about is the peace and development if the world. Today, i often read news related to tetorist's violences such as suicide bombing, car bombing which left many deaths. It's so terrible so we should speak out our voice to protest and awake people together solving those problems.
Dear Sevinç Paul from BBC Learning English here. I was asked to have a look at your original comments. Unfortunately I've been at a teachers' conference to make a presentation and have only been able to look at them today. Generally your comments have been fine and have't broken any house rules, so I've published them below. But I did need to make a couple of corrections. I hope you continue to enjoy reading and participating on the blogs and I look forward to reading more from you soon. Paul Sevinç'S MESSAGE hi Alex and everyone else, I have been following the blogs (both teacher and student) for a week. I'm interested in the blogs a lot. I beleive that the blogs will help my engilish skills to improve. the way you explain both grammar and meaning is very instructive. I would like to attract your attention on this conditional sentence; you say (write) in your blog, ‘If the Minas cheese wouldn’t be perishable, I would send a Fedex straight to Oxford Street… ‘ I think you perceived wrong Ana Paula's sentence or printing error. Ana Paula's sentence was like this; If the Minas cheese wasn´t perishable, I would send a Fedex straight to Oxford Street. (PAUL: Alex was referring to a mistake in a sentence in an earlier blog by Ana Paula. You refer to the sentence that Ana wrote as a correction after Alex had discussed conditionals) . Ana Paula's use of the grammar of the second conditional is exactly correct, in terms of both grammar and meaning as you may see. but, The second conditional is also structured like this; If the Minas cheese weren't perishable, I would send a Fedex straight to Oxford Street. of course, both of conditional structure of them are correct in terms of grammar and meaning. Here, that's the difference is; the former, to wit Ana Paula's structer, is informal, on the other hand; the latter is formal. best wishes sevinç Turkey Hi Ana Paula, in your every blog you choose so much interesting topic. I enjoy a lot reading your blog. I'm anxiously waiting for your writing. I have a wide range of musical taste.I can say that I like to listen all kind of music. I've never heard and tasted "CHEESE WITH FUDGE" . it should be delicious. If I got cheese with fudge, I would taste it. I love to taste previously untested. the thing which makes life is diversity, isn'it? Have a nice day. Sevinç Hi Ana Paula, I love to watch the people who dance. it is really amusing. But as for me, I have never managed to train myself related to dance. in the past once or twice I had taken part in dance courses, each time I would have let down... I love Turkish folk dance, which here in Turkey a wide range of types of folk dance have been performing. Turkey is very colourful country in terms of dance variety as well. I have been trying to develop my Engilish through BBC learning English the student and the teacher blogs. I have got many useful things even this much short period time. Will I give you a secret! I have been learning English on my own. I hope this time my comment will deliver you have a nice day sevinç
Hi Ana Paula, my Brazilian Fellow, As you said we can´t deny that soap operas are very popular here, in fact, they´ve become one of our popular export products to countries abroad. But like Adriana, I feel that we should approach them with a critical thinking cause the things they show are not always nice and instructive. Some unbalanced people can be badly influenced by the bad examples they see. And it's a pity to see that we receive over 10 hours of soap opera programming in some channels every single day!! Lucky us who have cable and satellite tv to choose nice programmes from. But how about the others who don't have this option? Better drop the subject. Cheerio Love, Monica
Hello Ana Paula. Good for you: you are the only one to answer Alex's question. Your last question is 'Is soap opera a popular entertainment in your country just like it is here in Brazil?'. I think soap opera is a very popular kind of entertainment all over the world. That's probably because it's a continuous source of amusement and delight to loads of people. What's more, it's a passive activity that provides entertainment and pleasure, and, I think, most people prefer pasive activities rather to the active once. Best wishes.
