Brazilian food.
Hi Alex, and hi my friends!
How was your day? Mine was good. By now is 17:45 and it´s raining cats and dogs here in Mogi. However, there is a mild breeze and the sound of the falling rain is very pleasant.
In one of the previous blog comments, Farida asked me about Brazilian food. So, today I´m going to tell you a little bit about our feeding habits.
Our every day meal basically consisting of rice and beans. If you come to Brazil and stay with a Brazilian family, rice and beans will always be in your plate, and served together with them a piece of meat, poultry or fish, and in some homes, like in mine, soya protein instead meat ( it´s delicious), complemented with lots of vegetables and salads, and a fruit as a dessert.
The Feijoada is our typical dish, and it´s really delicious, however I have to say that even me, as a Brazilian, think that some ingredients are very weird. But don´t be afraid of try it! You won´t have any regret about it.
It´s a very well seasoning stew, made of black beans, pork parts and dry meat. It´s served with rice, collard green, cassava flour and a peeled and sliced orange. It´s a strong dish, then it isn´t eaten every day. Just in special occasions, such as a baptism of a new family´s member .
My mother is from Minas Gerais state, therefore, our taste of food is very influenced by her origin state. My favourite dish is chicken with ocura. It´s a stew of chicken and ocura, which I eat with brow rice and beans. It´s really delicious.
Moreover the ocura is rich in fibres, and the viscous liquid that the ocura has, and some people think it´s disgusting, is very good for stomach diseases. And how about the desserts? Oh my God! There´re a wide range of them, worderfully prepared, that make any person on a diet give it up immediatelly. I love to have a slice of Minas cheese with guava jelly, or the slice of Minas cheese with fudge. Hmmm... the softness of the salty cheese mixed with the sweet of the guava jelly or the fudge is superb!
And you? Do you have any fauvorite food? And dessert? What´s your fauvorite one?
I´d like to say thank you for all the kind comments that I received in my last blog. Even more I´m feeling confident to write, and I´m enjoying very much this experience.
Thanks Paul for answering my question about Stephen. I´m looking foward to read his column.
Good night, See you tomorrow,
Ana Paula.

I favourite food is Chinese foods, which can be divided into different branches. However, I like Canton food the best, which is not so salty and orignal food flavor is kept! Now that I live in Beijing, I learn to cook Canton food (esp. the soup)by myself by learning from cuisine book, Betty's Kichen! It is a monthly magazine and wonderful indeed.
Hello Ana, sweet girl, thank you very much for writing on Brazilian food. Your blog is so good believe me my dear that I really enjoy reading it. I liked the way you described the weather in today's blog. Although, it is spring over here but summer is approaching and weather is becoming hot day by day with temp. around 33C. The food in Brazil is quite different from ours food. I don't know what occura is but I think that it must be delicious as you like it. It is amazing that eating rice every day and not putting on weight however, brown rice are not bad in the context. As you asked about our food we prepare chicken dishes by varius methods, we roast it simply after marinating it in vinegar, yogurt, salt, peppar, red chilli powder, garlic and ginger paste and serve it with salad. We make meat curry with chicken or beaf or mutton (being muslims we dont eat pork) and serve it with Roti made with wheat flour. The curry is made by frying the onions in oil and then put the meat in it fry it for 5 minutes then put tomatoes, garlic and ginger paste, spices and salt ( as per your taste) and again fry it and then put some water keep on low flame till the meat becomes tender and then garnish it with coriander leaves and green chillies. Like you we prepare several dishes with rice called Pulao (plain rice with meat in it),Biryanic rice with meat and spices which is usually prepared on weddings, or for dinner parties like your Feijoada it is strong dish served with yogurt and salad. We prepared several types of custards, puddings and especially the Kheer (made of rice in milk with sugar)in deserts. Asian foods are usually hot and spicy but it depends on your taste so you can put less spices in the dish. I invite you to come over here in Pakistan, be my guest and you will love to eat our dishes. I think the blog is too long so I would say good bye and thanks again but with a hope to see your photographs on the blog. Farida
Hi Ana Paula Your descriptions of meals makes my mouth water. Fortunately it is only past six am. I have tried to find what was ocura without success. Is it a kind of vegetable ? Antonio (from Spain but living in Belgium)
Hi Ana, description of your food and dessert is really mounth watering. I would love to taste brazilian food. It seems like you are vegetarian. Aren't you? Any particular reason behind it? The place (part of India) I am from, people eat vegetarian food...and we have plenty of varieties... we have lots of desserts too.. as you said, it can make any person on diet to give it up immediately. I would like to compliment your for the way you write. It is full of life. Monish
Ana Paula, your food heritage sounds very exciting. I am certain I would like Brazilian food as I am fond of a very well seasoned cooking. I like Indian dishes very much, also Chinese cuisine appeals to me. I am pleased that we have Chinese and Indian restaurants in my home town. My own cooking is influenced by my mothers cooking and by the fact that I have lived in England and New Zealand; being spring now, I use lamb to prepare different dishes. I also like vegetarian food very much. Bon Appetite to everyone…
Hi Ana Paula. In my state "Espírito Santo" the traditional dish is "moqueca capixaba" ( that we eat almost all weekends) and "torta capixaba", both are delicious and made with fish. However, it's not common to eat torta capixaba every day. If you look at the history, it's interesting because this dish was created by poor people in the past because during this holiday only the Portugal king's family could buy cod (it was common to eat it in Easter). So, the population started to mix with many ingredients like shrimp, "palmito" ( I don't know how to translate), among other. It became so popular that even the prince found it delicious and started to eat it but today it's an expensive dish, only eaten in the Easter holiday. That's the reason I love this holiday! My family, particularly, has the indiginous influence and we love fishes, fruits and vegetables. Although "Feijoada" is also popular here, I don't appretiate it very much because I prefer fish rather than pork. We have many different characteristics depending on which part of Brazil we are because the influence from Europe, Africa and indigenous people. In Minas Gerais, which is the main influence? I think people from Minas Gerais are very special. Just recently, I saw an elderly man having problems to climb the stairs at my work and I, personally, went to help him. He was surprised, looked at me and said: " are you from Minas Gerais( but I am not)?" I think you have inherited this good will from your mother. Do you believe it's true the common sense that each Brazil'state brings peculiar characteristics to its inhabitants?

Hi Ana, as we are from the same country, my taste in food isn't very different from yours. I certainly love black beans. Especially the way it is prepared here in my home. There's a strong flavor of garlic which I love and it's consistency is what makes the difference. It's extra thick. I particularly like it when it has been recently cooked. My mother likes to say it looks like chocolate, not in taste, of course. Love to read your blogs. Bye for now.
Hi, Ana Paula, I’m very fan of Minas Gerais Food. I’m don’t know what ocura is, but when you said,” My favorite dish is chicken with ocura” if you were thinking in a Portuguese word “Quiabo” (“chicken with quiabo”). I think this vegetable is commonly known as okra or lady's finger (scientific name: Abelmoschus esculentus). See you.
Hi, Ana Paula, Idon´t even know anything about your typicall food, but here in México the food is wonderful, there are many regional food but the most recognized(I guess..)is the "Tamales" and "Pozole" ,I´m sorry I can´t explain you what´s this food made because my vocabulary is very poor to do that :( But you´re incredible to express yourself so well ,I´m very envious, really!!!
