Ethiopian millennium
I just want to share something about Ethiopia calendar and our millennium. Based on our calendar today is January (it called Tire in Amharic) 28, 1999. Our new year is September 11. We have thirteen months, twelve months with 30 days each and one month with 5 days and 13th month have 6 days in every four years. This month called Pagume I do not know in English. So September 11, 2007 will be our millennium day. If some one who missed European millennium will have a chance at list to celebrate it once.

Hello Lemlem! Is intersting to know that we live both in the past, in the present and in the future as the same time, I mean, you are still living in the 20 th century when you are in your country but we are in the 21 th century when we are in our country. If we could change our lives by a migician touch, you woul be in the future and me in the past. This situation seems a little wild, don't you know? It doesn't matter if we are in the future or in the past, the important is we are here to know each other and learn english with pleasure. Good luck and wellcome!

Helo Lemlem! Welcome as our new blogger! I don't know a lot about Ethiopia. So I am eager to hear about the life there. Maybe I am not the only one who have never met people from Africa. So you have the hard task to present your country to us.Through your eyes the view will be rather different than information in wikipedia or the books. Admittedly,we'll help you with questions.Don't worry! Stay cool! Diema
Hi Lemlem, how are you? I’m sure you are excited and full of energy as a new student blogger. If you’ve followed the BBC blog you know that we are going to ask you a lot of questions, sometimes quite personal ones, but remember, you can count on us! You live in a wonderful, ancient country but exposed to so many threats. How do manage to live in? My interest in Ethiopia started when I read a book ‘Emperor’ by Ryszard Kapuscinski (Polish writer). As you can presume from the title of the book this is about the last Ethiopian emperor - Haile Selassie. Some people say that this is a perfect picture of the Haile Sleasie’s Ethiopia, some say this just Kapuscinski’s one, but all agree that this a masterpiece. By the way, the book was adopted into a play stage and performed in London theatre in 1980 or so. I am looking forward to your next posts, best

HI.. My name is Bappy. My located in the north-eastern Bangladeshi city of Sylhet. It’s hearing interesting to me about Ethiopia calendar. We are using here two types of calendar one of English and another of our national language Bangla. We also using in bangla calendar 12 months in a year. Now is Running 25 mag, 1413 (7th February, 2007). So I think it also looking to all a new thing.
Dear Lemlem! All your friends on the blog are looking forward to hearing from you , your country and your cultures and your everday life. We all hope that you are fine and safe. Katy/Iran
Hello Lemlem, I´d just like to state my kind welcome to you on the blog as everybody else did. I must say that you had an excellent start and got everyone interested in the things from your country including me. Wish you all the best.
Hello Lemlem, I just found this cool site a few minutes ago while I was searching for some news on the bbc news site. In the Far East countries, a lot of people still use both lunar calendar and the standard calendar. The interesting thing is that in lunar calendar sometimes you get 13 months a year too just like yours and I am not sure how it works but from the past 100s (maybe 1000s) years it hasn't gone wrong. It just makes me think it's so amazing how these people created the "special calendars" in the old age without help from a computer and now people still use it in the modern era...
Hello Lemlem! Welcome! Hope to hear about you every day...! Don't be late! I'm sure that you have a lot of interesting things to share with us. Don't be shy! We are your virtual friends!
Hi Lemlem i am eagerly looking forward to your reply.Where are you? Please write something about yourself and more. GOOD LUCK PARUL

Sound interesting! if you could tell us a bit more that will be fantastic! Welcome !
I wonder when I hear some respondent saying” it’s being wild to celebrate Ethiopian millennium". Off course, any body has his own right to comment and say what ever he likes, even in our country we are practicing this too. But, the important thing is not denying the truth. It is not the date and year that really matters, but it is the culture, dignity, being independent... you can name it more. We are the only Africans kept our dependency from European colonist and to keep our culture, ethnicity and language (Amharic). Don’t wonder when we say we have 13 months with sunshine, even we have our own letters and numbers. How about now... Rather you better come and enjoy in our Natural millennium. It is on September 11, 2007. The weather condition is very conducive and windy what you call "spring" where you can see lots beautiful tropical trees and flowers, endemic animals and birds, attaractive views in northern southern rift valley lakes barks. Therefore, you are highly welcome to Ethiopia (Abyssinia). God bless you all and Lemlem. We are waiting and Ethiopia is calling!
Ethiopia one of the great countries in the world, it is the begginning of man kind as the oldest humman remain over 3.4 million years old was found in ethiopia. With its diffrent culture, language (over 80),natural gifts, historical places, diffrent believers living together respecting each other, with reach history, proud and hero people, well comming and peacefull society, the only country to stand with out being colonized thanks to her heroic people, being the pick and also the lowest depression is found, many lakes rivers including the Nile, one of the countries to accept chrstianity and where followers of the profet mohamed were migrated and stationed for many years protected by Ethiopia and many more can be said about ethiopia; Ethiopia is be said a wonderfull country in many features, so to know Ethiopia please join us in our Mellinium (which is belived the true birth of Jesus Crist)Celebration and take this country to the new era.Long live Ethiopia,My country,my home.
I dont believe how your calender works. How can it be 1999 there now? Can someone please explain to me??????????????????
hi lemelm, i'm proud of you. you are trying to introduce my country. Foreign people who know that only Famine (starve) write them how beautiful country as we have.
Hi lemlem, I am happy that you have introduced our Calander, New year and the coming Mellinium. I want to explain some to those of you who are not clear with the calender and the 13th month. The Calender Consists of 365 days each year except at leap years where it becomes 366 days. It has 12 main months with 30 days each. and the 13th month (pagume) consists of 5 days each year except at leap (every 4 years) years where it becomes 6 days. More over most of you (the audences) are surprised at the Ethiopian Calander and Mellinum, yet I have another surprise to you. Do you know that Ethiopia has its own alphabets, Numbers? Do you know that Ethiopia has a written 3000 years of History and Teritorial integrity? Do you know that Ethiopia is the only African country to resist European colonization by its armed struggle? Do you know that Ethiopia is the home (Source)of man kind? Do you know that Ethiopia has more than 8 Historical and heritage sites recognazed by UNESCO as 'Worled Heritage Sites'. Do you know that Ethiopia is a country where Muslims and christians live together participating in many social gatherings? Do you know that Ethiopia is home for more than 80 ethinic groups with there distnict languege and culture? ....... more ... and ...and ...more.
I really enjoyed everyone's comments as they all promote understanding and tolerance for each other on the eve of the Ethiopian Millenium
Hi folks , The Ethiopian calendar is unique in the world, developed by the indiginous Coptic church leaning on ancient Egyptian astronimic calculations, the Jewish calandar and the Julian calandar - adopted under Julius Caesar and the root of all Christian date calculators. Europe in 1582 shifted to the Gregorian calendar, now putting most of us in January 2007. According to the Ethiopian calendar, we are in mid-1999. Here, "the year is divided into 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month of 5 days and 6 days in leap year," According to Harvard University Professor Ephraim Isaac, most scholars that have studied Biblical times agree that the Ethiopian calendar is much closer than the Gregorian to start its calculations of time around the birth of Jesus Christ. Some put this event in the year 0 of the Ethiopian calendar, while most historians hold Jesus Christ was born in year 3 of the same calendar - or year 5 in the Gregorian. While those wanting to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Jesus will have a lot of confusing dates to pick from, it remains clear that Ethiopia enters its new millennium on 12 September 2007, according to the calendar used by mosth others. And it also remains clear that the Ethiopian millennium party will be an outstanding event. As every year, Coptic Ethiopians will celebrate the Enkutatash - meaning "gift of jewels" - holiday on their New Years Eve. The event stems from an ancient tale: When the famous Queen of Sheba returned from her visit King Solomon in Jerusalem, her chiefs welcomed her bolts by replenishing her treasury with jewels.
lemlem you are great.you are introducing ethiopia well.try to give more information about our millinnium.
Lemlem, I apprciate your effort to introduce your country. I hope you will not be astonished with all the comments comming in all direction. Ethiopia is the home of ancient civilazation. The year gap our calnander with GC is connected with the introduction of the christian religion. The birth of Christ is belived to be heard in Ethipia after 7 years in Ethiopia. As there are a lot we can learn from the world, we have also a lot to tell about ourselves to the world. Good wish!
God Bless You All, Lemlem And ETHIOPIA Do not forget that the focus in celebrating the millienium is JESUS CHRIST
