Watermelons:a good harvest & a low price
JENNY FROM CHINA BLOGGED IN AUGUST
In Xi'an, china, where I live, the cheapest fruit in this summer is watermelon.
There are some highlands in our provinces where the day is warm and the night is cool. This weather really benefits for watermelons, because sugar can be concentrated in the fruit. So they taste really sweet!
Farmers in our provinces had got the biggest harvest among recent years and the watermelon's price decreased down to the history record. Government encouraged people to eat more watermelons and it already gave farmers some subsidies. However the problems are still serious. Our local newspaper said a woman farmer had taken suicide. She lived in another province where there is also a big watermelon harvest. She didn't want to see her watermelons would rot on her field.
On the early morning many farmers came to our street to sell their farm products. They often come back home at noon. The watermelon costs Chinese Yuan 0.4~0.6 per kilogram. It equals to British Pound 0.03~0.05 per kilogram. In addition, it is a retail price instead of a wholesale price.
We can not eat more so we make watermelon juice. One of my western friends does this, and so do I.

thanks to lewis' advice, I have made a improved version. I keep the old one, so we can compare the 2 versions.

Hi Jenny, thanks for your information about watermelons in China. Speaking of watermelons, we Japanese sometimes put salt on it in order to increase the sweetness. Some people may think that it doesn't make sense, but in fact we can taste it. So do you Chinese have special way for watermelon besides juice?
mmm Its so good watermelons! we have it all de year! Thanks for remember it for me
Hi! I know how delicious watermelons are in you area. I really feel like flying to Xi'an to pig out watermelons as many as I want. It was painful to read about the female farmer who killed herself. She really shouldn't have done that. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your next post.
I have also read the news about the big harvest of watermelons and its tragedy. Just wonder if you have heard about people adding additives/coloring agents/Chinese "red drug syrup" to watermelon to make it more red in the southern part of China. Don't know if there is any chance to move the watermelons in your part of China to the southern part in a fast way.
Thanks for sharing this piece of news. I read it too from newspaper. Just wonder if you have heard about the unethical malpractice of adding "red medicine water" to the watermelon so as to make it more red in colour. Is there any chance to ship the great crop of watermelons from your part of China to the southern part of China?
Hi jenny! I am really sorry for the watermelon farmers and the woman who committed suicide. Whenever I buy a watermelon I get disappointed the taste, not crunch and soggy and not much juicey. I amd pretty sure yours are very juicey and sweet and crunch like korean watermelons. I think some country's goverment encorage their farmers to product too much crops and fruits, and they do not care of the consequence. I wish I could buy chiness watermelons and help the farmers in England. anyway i thorougly enjoyed your letter. see you soon
Hi Jenny! Your letter is very interesting. In our country watermelons are also ripening in the summer heat. Some farmers are selling their crops next to the main street, too. I am fortunate because I can pick fresh fruit from my garden. I´d ten times rather like to eat honeydew melon than watermelon. I look forward to your next blog.
hello,Anita,i am rainging to try your honeydew melon.here's are not sweet enough.i have not heard about "red drug syrup" yet. we are in the north part of china.I hope they didn't do that, otherwise who can buy them?
Hi Jenny! I have never heard about "red drug syrup",too. I hope that nobody uses this method in my country.
Hi Jenny, in spain the watermelon is a typical fruit. In summer everybody eat it but here it's more expensive than in xina (about 0.5 eur Kilogram)
Hi Jenny! In summer, eating watermelons is really enjoyable. Now, some shops sell them by piece. A litte expensive.
