Morgan is currently the Welsh and British women's badminton number one and will defend her Commonwealth Games title in Manchester this summer after taking gold in Malaysia four years ago. Morgan arrived in Kuala Lumpar as a virtual unknown in her own country, but as the No 1 seed she was showered with attention from the badminton-mad Malaysian public. A semi-final victory over England's Tracy Hallam guaranteed Morgan a medal, with Aparna Popat standing in the way of gold.
Morgan had beaten the Indian in three sets on the opening day of the Games in the team event and at 10-10 in the first set another marathon tie looked likely. But Morgan stepped up her game to record probably the finest victory of her career to date, taking a tense first set 13-10 and then destroying her opponent 11-5 in the second. Her achievement was recognised by the Welsh sporting public that year and she was voted runner-up in the Welsh Sports Personality of the Year. The 27-year-old has represented Wales 110 times in both singles - where she is currently ranked No 13 in the world - and doubles, forming a formidable partnership with Richard Vaughan. While Morgan's sporting achievements are impressive - she was a member of Britain's Olympic squads in both 1996 and 2000 - she has also been heavily involved in charity work. Chief among her causes is working to help those with Down's Syndrome and Morgan is the patron of the Down's Syndrome Association of Wales. She said: "I'm really chuffed. It's my gran's 75th birthday as well, so it will be a double celebration. "It's really good timing. I've been training hard recently and this will give me extra motivation for the Commonwelath Games." |
