Bobby Robson, the Newcastle and former England manager, has capped an extraordinary career with a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

The 69-year-old is among a host of sporting stars honoured by the Queen, including England rugby union coach Clive Woodward and athlete Paula Radcliffe.

Robson has spent 53 years in football during a career that has brought success at Ipswich Town, PSV Eindhoven, Porto and Barcelona and most recently Newcastle.

The 69-year-old also guided England to the World Cup quarter-finals in 1986 and the semi-final four years later.

Woodward, the man responsible for an upturn in England's rugby union fortunes, has been awarded an OBE.

Since he took over in 1997, England have won the Six Nations twice and have once again become a team to be feared.

They also shocked rugby superpowers South Africa and Australia last November by defeating both nations.

Hope Powell, coach of the England womens' football team, is also awarded an OBE.

Curling gold medallists Debbie Knox, Fiona MacDonald, Rhona Martin, Margaret Morton and Janice Rankin have been awarded MBEs after their triumph in the Winter Olympics.

The MBE has also been awarded to Celtic defender Tommy Boyd.

Boyd made 72 international appearances for Scotland and is their fifth most-capped player of all time.

Another footballing Scot, David Will, vice-president of Fifa's executive committee, receives a CBE.

Jason Leonard, who has won 98 caps for England and is the most capped forward in rugby union history, has been awarded an MBE.

The prop made his Test debut against Argentina in 1990.

An MBE also goes to British athletics star Paula Radcliffe, the world cross-country champion, who recently won the London Marathon.
