Vaughan and Morgan a class apart
Kelly Morgan
Kelly Morgan secured her tenth consecutive title
Welsh King and Queen of the badminton court Kelly Morgan and Richard Vaughan retained their Welsh National Singles Championship crowns in Wrexham over the weekend.

Repeating last year's performance, 25-year-old Morgan of Tonteg took the singles throne without even dropping a point.

It was the tenth National title for the world number five.

"Its fantastic to get my tenth win and to get ever nearer to breaking the record held by Angela Dickson for 16 consecutive wins," said Morgan.

"The Nationals are always a good event - its the only chance for the up-and-coming players in the squad to actually play against me so they can get a taste of what they need to do to reach world top ten standard."

Meeting Sian Jones of Builth Wells, who earned her finals spot after beating fellow Powys player Natalie Davey 11/7, 9/11, 11/2, Morgan demonstrated her world-class credentials with a comfortable 11/0, 11/0 victory.

Relaxed

Fellow Olympic ace, Llanbradach's Richard Vaughan, took his fifth consecutive win after toppling second seed Matthew Hughes of Penmaenmawr 15/6, 15/2.

Said 22 year-old Vaughan: "Its great to play at tournament at home before I compete in the All-England in March and five- star tournaments in Asia.

"Its always a nice relaxing atmosphere at home and it gives Kelly and I a chance to catch up with the rest of the Welsh squad.

"I had a good game with Matthew and it's clear that his hard training is paying off."

Double success

Felicity Gallup and Jo Muggeridge of Cardiff successfully defended their doubles title, beating Kelly Morgan and Swansea's Katy Howell 15/6, 15/11.

The mens doubles saw a thrilling match between coaches and players.

The title-holding formula of Wales National Coach Chris Rees and Neil Cottrill was too strong for Rees' protgs Matthew Hughes and Chris Davies of Mountain Ash who were overcome 15/12, 15/5.

Cottrill made it a double success by winning the mixed doubles title alongside Jo Muggerdidge.
