![]() | Friday, 19 April, 2002, 12:31 GMT 13:31 UK Wales trio are knocked out ![]() Kelly Morgan lost out in the last eight Kelly Morgan, Richard Vaughan and Irwansyah were knocked out of the European Championships, dashing Wales's hopes of returning home with a medal. The three breezed through to the quarter finals, but were faced with a difficult task. All three games consisted of five sets, a sign of a tough clash. Kelly Morgan, who won bronze last time, was defeated by Russia's Brenda Beenhakker 7-2, 6-8, 4-7, 7-2, 7-2. Richard Vaughan, who also came home with a bronze two years ago, went down 7-5, 1-7, 8-6, 3-7, 7-0 to Sweden's Rasmus Wengberg. Denmark's Anders Boesen conquered Irwansyah 1-7, 4-7, 7-4, 7-0, 7-4. Long matches Wales's national coach Chris Rees said: "They are all very disappointed because Richard and Kelly especially did exceptionally well last time at the Europeans. "All three of them played well and I was pleased with their performance even though the score didn't go their way. "The matches were all long, hard and demanding and we had a good chance of coming home with three medals, but it wasn't meant to be on the day." In the men's doubles, Martyn Lewis and Matthew Hughes lost in straights sets to top seeds Anthony Clarke and Nathan Robertson of England.
