I was very disappointed to find out early this week that I need surgery on a back injury. My back has been bad for about a month and it wasn't getting any better - in fact it was getting worse. A scan revealed that I have a chipped piece of bone on my spine which is pressing against some nerves and giving me a pain in my back.
I had an injection last week in the hope that the pain would settle down but it hasn't, and now I have to have an operation to take the piece of chipped bone out. The operation and recovery from surgery will keep me out for between six and eight weeks and means that I am likely to miss the one-off Test with Australia in July. That news was a massive blow. I thought I had used up all my bad luck last year when I broke my arm and missed all three matches against the Kangaroos last November. But it looks like my injury curse has struck again. Injury forced me out of the 1997 Super League Test series against Australia and I missed most of the last World Cup as well. It is a pretty shattering blow. Disappointing season The season as a whole hasn't gone as well as I would have liked - I got banned, then I was out for a few games with injured ribs and then I got knocked unconscious. But there is no point sitting around and moping, feeling sorry for myself. I will look for positives and know that within two months I'll be back and 100% fit. Hopefully I'll be back for the end-of-season finals with the Roosters and then return home and play for Great Britain.
I'll be sorry to miss the Australia Test in July, particularly as the game is in Sydney. Great Britain have a few other injury concerns apart from me, with Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham nursing injuries. But I believe that they will make the Test, and with them on board there is no reason why we can't compete with the Aussies. We will put up a good show against the Australians and our squad is strong enough to cope with the odd injury. |
