Morley: Aussie rules too strict
News image

When the Roosters play their biggest game in my two seasons here on Sunday, I will be stuck up in the stands.

That is not too unusual as I seem to have had more than my fair share of injuries since moving to Sydney.

But this time, it will be more frustating than ever because I feel I should be out there in our semi-final against the Newcastle Knights.

Instead, I have to sit out a one-week ban for what was a pretty minor trip in our first play-off match, against Cronulla.

I have looked at the incident since and there was nothing in it - it was just a bit of fun.

I was having an ongoing battle with Sharks front rower Chris Beattie and we were getting stuck into each other like an old fashioned confrontation.

When the actual tripping incident occured, the guy went over but got up laughing.

However, the NRL did not see the funny side and I have had to take a ban.

If I try to see it from their point of view, there was contact and that's all they look at.

They do not look at provocation or what was going on before it.

Aggression is all part of the game and I think the NRL were harsh in banning me.

Confrontation is what has been missing in the game and it is what people come to watch.

The interpretation of the rules is too strict these days.

Most of the referees here are very good but you do tend to get pinged for everything, particularly with citings.

Newcastle star Johns will miss the remainder of the season
Andrew Johns broke three bones in his back
In England, you do get pulled up but over here they are ultra-strict.

There is a guy who looks at every single game and you don't even need to be put on report for him to cite you.

They do let a few more things go in England.

It is disappointing to be banned at this stage but I'm confident my season is not over yet.

We can beat Newcastle, particularly as they will be without Andrew Johns.

We are just hitting form at the right time now, having won six games on the trot. We have beaten most of the top sides so there is no reason why we can't go all the way.

It is just a question of being up for it on the day.

The Brisbane Broncos will be there or thereabouts but if we beat Newcastle we play them in the Preliminary Final.

The Broncos know what it is all about because they have been here so many times, but I am confident we can knock them off.
