SPL predictions
News image
Celtic v Dunfermline

Celtic had little problems with visiting SPL teams last season and there is no reason to believe that will change as they unfurl the championship flag in front of their fans on Saturday.

Manager Martin O'Neill has strengthened his squad with the signings of David Fernandez, Magnus Hedman and Ulrik Laursen, although none of the three are guaranteed to start against Dunfermline.

The Pars have suffered a few heavy defeats at the hands of Celtic in recent times.

A number of injury worries for Jimmy Calderwood ahead of the curtain raiser will not help their cause.

Prediction: Home win

Dundee v Hearts

Dundee were frustratingly inconsistent last season, but the installation of Jim Duffy as manager could stamp that out.

Certainly the quality exists in the squad to allow Dundee to have a team capable of finishing in the top four.

Hearts too will be aiming to be among the best teams outside of the Old Firm and Craig Levein has a side capable of doing that.

However, a number of injury concerns ahead of the season's opening game means his squad is already being stretched.

Prediction: Home win

News image
Hibernian v Aberdeen

Hibs will be desperate to start the season with a victory after the disappointment of finishing tenth last season.

A confidence-boosting win could propel Bobby Williamson's side on the way to a good season.

Aberdeen's excellent home form did not accompany them on the road last season and they will need to improve their results on their travels to attain third place.

Ebbe Skovdahl's youngsters have plenty SPL experience under their belt by now and will provide a severe test for the home side.

Prediction: Draw

Kilmarnock v Rangers

Kilmarnock have proved to be tough opponents for Rangers at Rugby Park in the past, so this occasion should be no different.

Jim Jefferies has had plenty time to instil his own methods into the Killie players and they will certainly be well organised.

Rangers must get off to a winning start if they are to seriously challenge Celtic for the title this season.

If new signing Mikel Arteta can link up well with Barry Ferguson in midfield, Alex McLeish's men should create plenty of chances.

Prediction: Away win

Livingston v Motherwell

Livingston would not have dreamed this time last year that they would achieve what they did in their first season in the Scottish Premier League.

This season, they face an even more difficult task to live up to the standards they set, but Jim Leishman and Davie Hay's side should do well again.

Motherwell, on the other hand, could struggle this season, after having to lay off 19 players.

They will do well to take anything from this game.

Prediction: Home win

News image
Partick Thistle v Dundee United

SPL new boys Thistle will hope for a winning return to the top flight and John Lambie's men will be fired up for the challenge.

This is the type of game the Jags must win if they are to survive.

Dundee United will not underestimate the league's newcomers, but they will also be targetting three points from the opening game of the season.

This game should be a good indication of how both sides will fare in the season ahead.

Prediction: Draw
