Pars must set sights high
Dunfermline are aiming for a repeat of last season
Dunfermline just made the top six last season
Dunfermline had designs on Europe until pretty late on last season, eventually finishing a creditable sixth.

Inconsistency, the problem of the bulk of the teams in the SPL, was what spoiled the Pars' Uefa Cup ambitions.

Manager Jimmy Calderwood's attack-minded tactics have, on occasion, proved a little too gung-ho, particularly against the Old Firm.

Nevertheless, Calderwood's policy has made for some exciting football at East End Park in the past couple of seasons.

The loss of Ian Ferguson in the summer means greater responsibility will fall upon the young shoulders of Barry Nicholson.

Last season: 6th
Key player: Barry Nicholson
Top signing: Craig Brewster
Nicholson was overlooked, somewhat unjustly in many football fans' eyes, by Berti Vogts for his first games in charge, and he will be out to show the Scotland manager what he can do.

Experienced players like Scott Walker and Craig Brewster have been brought in over the summer to strengthen the squad.

If Calderwood can continue to get the same type of application from his players, Dunfermline will again be pushing for a top six place.

But there is a fine line between success and failure in the SPL, with a number of clubs as capable of challenging for Europe as they are of being caught up in a relegation battle.

The Pars will hope they do not fall into the latter category this season.
