United aim for top-six finish
Charlie Miller in action in the Dundee derby
Charlie Miller (right) is hugely influential
United have been counting the pennies for years now and this summer has been no different, although Alex Smith has done wel to bring in a couple of free transfers..

Experienced players such as David Hannah and Jamie Fullarton had to be released in an attempt to reduce the club's wage bill.

Last season saw an improvement on the one before, but eighth place still compares rather poorly with the club's performances in the 1980s when they regularly challenged for honours.

  Dundee Utd FC
Last season: 8th
Key player: Charlie Miller
Top signing: Kevin McGowne
Manager Alex Smith is not short of talent, however, with right back Jamie McCunnie and frontman Steven Thompson both up-and-coming talents, while the influential figure of Charlie Miller continues to flourish and frustrate in equal measure.

The signing of Kevin McGowne to partner his former Kilmarnock teammate Jim Lauchlan at the back should prove a decent bit of business, while Arnar Gunnlaugsson can score goals.

On the other hand, the acquisition of Allan Smart is something of a gamble.

Smart failed to prove his worth at Hibs last season and was quickly allowed to leave.

He will have to repay Smith's faith in him by scoring a few goals to become a Tannadice regular.

United will be looking for a top six finish this time as well as a decent run in the cups.
