Knight (c) edged a three-way battle on day one
David Knight says he is "made up" to record first and second place finishes in the latest round of the Enduro World Championship in Portugal. The giant Manx rider was competing on painkillers after the recurrence of a painful hip and groin injury in the opening rounds in Spain. "It was really painful towards the end of the races but I just gritted my teeth," said the KTM rider. Knight won the opening day and finished runner-up to Mika Ahola on day two. The Finnish rider now leads Christophe Nambotin by 13 points in the standings, after winning three out of four rounds. Knight, who had to withdraw from the opening E3 rounds in Spain, is eighth. The 32-year-old made a winning start when he topped the Super Test, before going on to win the opening day by a little over four seconds, after a three-way battle with Ahola and Nambotin. The second day again saw a three way fight for the win between the same three riders, ending with Knight claiming the runner-up position. He continued: "It's great to get two full days of competition completed, especially after not finishing in Spain. I was surprised how well things went on day one, I wasn't pushing to the absolute limit, I was just trying to enjoy myself. "I didn't know what my hip would be like. It's such a frustrating problem, but I'm pleased that my riding was good. "Midway through the second day I didn't think I was going to be able to finish though because of my hip. I didn't have unbearable pain, it was just difficult moving around on the bike like I wanted and it was constantly aching. The championship will now move on to Italy on 14-15 May.
