Juniors struggle in second round of British road series

Jonathan Cregeen
Cregeen finished 14th overall

Team Isle of Man - Microgaming's Jonathan Cregeen finished 14th overall in the second round of the British Cycling's Junior National Road Series.

The two-day Tour of Bristol held on 9 and 10 April saw riders tackle a challenging course in the Mendip Hills.

The four-man squad struggled in the hot temperatures with overall finishes for Tom Mazzone in 30th, Warwick Sanderson, 39th and Alex Haddock, 54th.

The series has been a springboard to success for many Manx riders.

The first stage was 117km based on a 13km circuit around Chew Valley Lake.

The fast pace saw the full distance being completed in just two and a half hours.

A group of six riders managed to maintain a 30 second advantage with Oliver Rossi getting the verdict on the line.

The best of the Manx quartet saw 17-year-old Tom Mazzone finish in 20th place.

The second stage held on Sunday took riders on a 100km journey with five category three climbs, including a tough climb to the finish line.

Riders struggled in the hot conditions, but with just six kilometres remaining Rupert Denny from Team Nemesis, took the stage by 40 seconds and with it the overall race victory.

Manx rider Jonathan Cregeen finished 15th, one minute 36 seconds behind the stage winner, leaving him 14th overall.

The squad's next race will be the Gorey Three-Day event in Ireland over the Easter weekend.
