Eugene Laverty now leads the Supersport series by three points |
Northern Irishman Eugene Laverty moved to the top of the World Supersport Championship as he took victory in Sunday's round in San Marino. The Parkalgar Honda rider finished 3.876 seconds ahead of Spain's Joan Lascorz while previous series leader Kenan Sofuoglu took third. Laverty now heads Sofuoglu by three points in the championship standings. Jonathan Rea's poor recent form continued as he finished 13th and 12th in the Superbike races in San Marino. Rea had only been 16th in qualifying and while he improved to eighth early in Sunday's opener, he lost places during the remainder of the race. Max Biaggi won both of Sunday's races to move 37 points ahead of Leon Haslam at the top of the standings with five rounds remaining. Rea was hugely disillusioned by his performance over the weekend and blamed a continuing grip problem for his mid-season struggles after such a bright start to the campaign. "I'm sure you don't need me to tell you how I'm feeling after this weekend, and most of what I'm feeling you wouldn't be able to publish anyway," said Rea. "It's unbelievably frustrating to be held back by this grip problem when it wasn't that long ago that we were winning. "We just haven't been able to sort things out this weekend and the results show that more clearly than anything else. "We've got to get it together and I'm hoping that a two-day test will allow us an opportunity to do that." Rea drops to fourth in the championship standings on 158 points with Carlos Checa now in third on 172. Biaggi leads the standings on 307 points.
