Jonathan Rea took a brace of wins at the World Superbike round at Assen |
Jonathan Rea secured a double success at Sunday's latest round of the World Superbike Championship at Assen. The Hannspree Ten Kate rider from Ballyclare came home ahead of James Toseland in the first race and beat series leader Leon Haslam in race two. Rea also set a new lap record for the circuit and is now up to third place in the championship standings. Eugene Laverty took a commnading triumph in the World Supersport race at the same venue. Rea had also set the fastest time in qualifying for the races. "It's been great but I couldn't have done it without my team," said Rea after his second success. "We changed the balance of the bike quite a lot for this weekend and it's made it more comfortable to ride. "I guess you could say that these two races were probably the smartest I've ever ridden. "It's a clean sweep with pole position, a double win and the fastest lap so I'm as proud as punch," added the 23-year-old. Laverty's second win of the Supersport series on his Parkalgar Honda saw him close the gap on championship leader Joan Lascorz. The fifth round of the series will be at Monza in Italy on 9 May.
