Eugene Laverty was second in last year's World Supersport championship |
Eugene Laverty secured a third successive win in the World Supersport championship by taking victory at Kyalami in South Africa on Sunday. The Parkalgar Honda rider from Toomebridge came home ahead of Kenan Sofuoglu, with Chaz Davies in third. Laverty trails series leader Sofuoglu by just one point after six rounds. Jonathan Rea finished second in the day's second World Superbike race after taking fifth in race one and he is now tied for third in the standings. Michel Fabrizio won the first race, with Carlos Checa second and Leon Haslam third. Rea, who had qualified 11th fastest, led for much of race two but was overtaken by Haslam in the closing stages. Max Biaggi was third. Laverty said there was "all to play for" after his win. "To win three races in a row is fantastic - Kenan kept me at it in the first half of the race but I just kept pushing," he added. The next round will be in the United States of America on 31 May.
