England beat France in their opening group game in the 1982 World Cup but it was the French who reached the last four.
The semi-final went to extra-time and goals from Marius Tresor and Alain Giresse put France 3-1 up and within touching distance of a first World Cup final.
But Germany levelled with goals from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Klaus Fischer and went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-4.
France's defeat in one of the great semi-finals was hard to take, given keeper Toni Schumacher should have been sent off for his awful challenge on Patrick Battiston.
