Under Bobby Robson, England failed to make it to the 1984 European Championship.
Inspired by Michel Platini, who scored two hat-tricks in the group stages, France reached the final after an epic extra-time semi-final win over Portugal.
In the final, Platini's free-kick squirmed under Spanish goalkeeper Luis Arconada as France's captain scored his ninth goal of the competition - a record that still stands.
Late on, Yvon Le Roux was sent off but Bruno Bellone chipped Arconada for France's second in the 90th minute as France won their first major tournament.
