World Cup 1998
David Beckham is sent off against Argentina, while France beat Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup final
A third dose of penalty shoot-out misery for England as Glenn Hoddle's side were beaten by Argentina after David Beckham was red-carded in a thriller.

France won a quarter-final penalty shoot-out against Italy, beating Croatia in the semis to set up a final meeting with Brazil.

The defending champions fielded an unfit Ronaldo, who had had a convulsion prior to the final, and paid the price as two Zinedine Zidane headers and an Emmanuel Petit goal gave France a 3-0 win.

Having come so close in 1982 and 1986, France had finally won their first World Cup.
